View Full Version : Waving to people

I know this has been posted before, but I would like to bring up the issue again. When I moved here two years ago, most people on carts waved as you went by each other. I rarely see that now. I make an effort to smile and wave to people. The wave I received from people back then was one of the reasons I thought this was such a great place to live. That wave stood for happiness at being in TV..
It seems many have gotten bored with that initial burst of friendliness and have reverted to the big city "eyes straight ahead" mentality. Yes, we have to pay attention to our driving, but that small wave brought so much sunshine to my soul. I think we should all make a conscious effort to start waving and smiling at one another again. I never stopped. If I make one grumpy person smile, my day is happier. I may sound like a Stepford wife wanting a perfect world here in TV, but so what. There's a huge world out there that can be grumpy
and discourteous. Here we can be different. Let's really be America's friendliest and happiest home town. wav wav wav wav wav wav

If you see four people next week on rental golf carts waving and saying hi to everyone, that will be me. I am sorry to hear that folks have stopped that very simple and pleasant gesture.
I still acknowledge people I pass in the streets, stores, etc. I will continue to do so in spite of their response. wav wav wav wav wav wav wav

I'm with you. I have a ball driving the Miata and waving at folks. Think I've only had two not wave back and then there was the one who waved with one finger. I just did a "naughty-naughty" with two fingers and he started cracking up and waved.
People do still wave first, though. Sadly, it seems to be more from walkers than drivers -- golf cart or otherwise.
I don't live there yet, but in my many visits, I was amazed at all the people who waved. I guess just the ones I saw seemed like many many to me compared to what you have been used to, but maybe some don't wave cuz they were taught to keep both hands on the wheel?? ??? :joke:

GG,
If we two Buckeyes ever meet up, I will tell you a story about Johnny Marzetti. Not here. Not now. Not because the story is rated R or anything. It is because the story would reveal one of Boomer's secrets. (Do I need help or what? I am beginning to refer to myself in third person.)
But I can tell you and everybody else a story about waving.
Remember the 70's when we were all so darned cute. Well, my car was cute, too. It was a Triumph. When I bought it, used, somebody told me that I could end up having to put out for a British Leland Motors mechanic.
I loved that little car.
But at the time there was protocol on the road, here in my part of Ohio anyway.
I guess there had been a time when all sportscar drivers waved to one another.
But by the time I was one, the protocol had changed.
The one in the less expensive sportscar had to wave first.
Well, I was pretty busy waving first to Porsches and Jags, no matter what their number, and pretty much everybody else. I was never sure what to do though when I met an MG. So I just waved anyway.
So what I am starting to wonder as I read this thread is whether some of those sportscar drivers that I was waving to first in the 70's are in TV. Well, if they are down there and are being quite snotty and full of themselves, they may want to consider getting over it.
Sam is right.

Living in grumpy upstate N.Y for so many years where the sun rarely shines and noone ever waves to each other in passing, I will have to keep a rubberband on one finger to remind me to wave, wave, wave! I think its a wonderful idea and hopefully I will catch on quickly. It really is such a nice gesture , thanks for bringing it up!
If you pass me and I dont wave, please give me a good swift kick! LOL

Interesting observation, Sam. My first trip to TV in March, 07, everyone wav wav so much that I thought they were nuts (being a NY type of girl), but of course, I would always wav wav back, in a typical queen of the parade fashion.
But, my last trip, I thought it was me, but there weren't as many wav wav from others, and I found that I was the only one wav wav and they weren't wav wav back?

When I took my first trolley ride more than three years ago, I was struck by the fact that several people in their golf carts waved at the trolley! So, I now make it a habit to wave at the trolley, too, even though it's usually probably only the driver who sees me! Still, chances are he's been a Villager for years and is glad of the wave!

For the longest time I've done this in "grumpy New York," and it is invariably disarming. Too often people just don't know what to make of it and pass me off as a nut case. It's just fun to see people's reaction. I remember years ago riding up and down the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn with friends and their two sons wearing Groucho glasses with the bushy eyebrows, big nose, and moustache, smiling and waving to people. Nothing unsafe, but it was always amusing to see such varied reactions. I smile and wave to people here in TV all the time; whether they respond is not my problem....

That spirit of friendliness is what impressed us so much when we were at the Villages in February. We stopped to ask directions and the people who helped us were so enthusiastic about TV and happy to help us, that it was contagious.
The people we saw in the restaurant just looked so happy and enthusiastic, too. We began to wander if the water was drugged. :) :) :)

I really did try waving to people yesterday while driving my golf cart. Taking my hand off the wheel as any times as I had to made me feel a little insecure(especially the way I drive)! Golf carts kept going by and I had to keep driving with one hand, the cart did not seem to stay on track for me.
I did notice people smiling and nodding tho as I went by but not waving. Now Im not sure what to do, I certainly dont want to appear unfriendly! :dontknow: Such a problem!!!

As a former biker - yeah they waved - as a current Vette owner - yeah they wave - and livin here in KY even the pick up truck good ol boys wave or nod. Now I was never used to that until we moved to KY. So what's the problem in TV? I just got through braggin to a newbie on how friendly the people are in TV. If you don't wanna wave to me when I drive by you I hope your line breaks at your next bass tournament. There I'm Done.

Being Kansas born and bred we "farmers" (even us city folk who considered ourselves farmers) waved to everyone!
Driving down the country roads, not only did the drivers of all the pickup trucks (and that's about all they drive in farm country) wave, but also the farmers on tractors from the fields as we passed. I always made a joke about buying one of those spring waving hands that attach to glass...it would always be waving driven by the well known blowing Kansas winds and I'd never have to do it manually again!
I'm just warning you...when I arrive in TV tomorrow evening...
...if you see a lady in a light green GAS golf cart with a gold Parrot's Landing emblem on the front waving...it's ME!!!!! And if I can figure out a way to attach a Parrothead Hat and Margarita sunglasses to my cart, then you'll know it's me for sure!

I had the chance to visit the Villages for a few days, rented golf carts with another couple and made our way through the different areas. I was waving and smiling at folks as they passed and got very little response. One thing did happen, after about passing a couple hundred golf carts, waving and smiling got very tiring. I then switched to smiling and nodding. After that, I tried just smiling...then I said "Don't Make eye contact" and I won't have to do anything.
I think the waving and smiling is a great thing to do, but you know it gets old after about hundred or so golf carts full of people. So it may not be that folks are rude, it's just that they are worn out from the activity.

Before moving to TV, I lived in the DC area for 11 years. I found that throughout the District area, but especially on the Beltway, lots of people would wave. However, the big difference between the waves in DC and those in TV is down here folks tend to use all their fingers.

After you wave turn around and look back. Many times by the time the person sees your wave and starts waving back they have gone by. If driving the cart don't turn :) I find early morning prople tend to wave more.

We were in TV for the winter and most everyone waved. We were Up North, so maybe these folks are just happier than most because they've been here longer ... who knows, but I still think TV is a very friendly place. People at the squares talk to you, people in the movie theaters talk to you ...

Thats so true Sam, and the happiness is contagious in The Villages.
Seasonal depression can be a real problem, and there is very little sunshine in our neck of the woods. A friend of mine who moved to California for 2 years told me she got totally sick of one sunny day after the other, and was so happy to get back to N.Y. Now what do you make of that??? :dontknow:

I hope I will get sick of it so I can be happy every time we head north. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state. Our home is stunning and sits in a magical location. The only problem is lack of a social life. Everyone is working. Here in TV, you can wake up and go out to play everyday. There are lots of friends that want to come out and play, as well. It's wonderful!
The sunshine makes you happy. I love Stepford City..oops, The Villages.

After living most of my life in Massachusetts and NH where the gray days outnumber the sunny ones, I will never be tired of day after day of sunshine. It is the best.
I agree with Rhonda, I leave my hands on the wheel and smile or nod. The cart paths up here north of 466 are to narrow and you need to be in full control. I swear some folks are hitting 25 mph's or more. They leave me in a cloud of dust. They even pass me on a curve with no ability to see if someones up ahead. Scary.

Waving is very common in the retirement community where we currently live. When we were in TV two weeks ago, we waved to everyone. Some waved back and some looked at us like, who is that... do we know them? Well, I like waving. It makes you feel like you live in friendly community, so when we get there we will wave! wav
