I don't know much in depth about the role of the UN, and welcome all comments.

It was disturbing me to hear the UN plans to repair damage in Gaza caused by Israel's defending itself against attacks by Hamas.

Why would UN rush in with megabucks and repair a place that instigates and perpetuates bombing and gets bombed back?

What do you think of the UN.....I don't. I suspect that one could produce a list of the number of reason why the UN should go but in the final analysis at least it keeps nations talking.

The UN is ineffective in fighting and/or defending nations. The UN was critical of reports of rape by soldiers but its own troops are as guilty. Wecould go on ad nauseam

i don't think our membership in the UN benefits us in any way....any vote which would benefit us is vetoed by china or russia. we provide the lion's share of funding for this body while they try to make international agendas which are against our own constitutional laws, such as arms treaty and agenda 21. we do not need our laws influenced by third world dictators with a vote at the UN. it is totally useless.

Useless political money drain of US resources.

If they were a corporation being measured on performance, their doors would have been closed and locked years ago.

CLASSIC example of a well intended organization that has outlived it's purpose and contributes little added value.....but yet remains in tact.

POLITICS = no sense ever burning other peoples $$$$.

Haven't been to the UN lately, but back in the day they had great gift shops. Now I think they're a pain in the butt clogging up traffic.

I'm not so crazy about the place, too many foreigners.

It started off with noble intentions but, since 1945, has morphed into a left wing cesspool by and large. It’s essentially a social club for anti-American governments, tin-horn dictators and associated thugs who’ve taken over their third world countries. It’s also pretty much cowardly and ineffectual in terms of US foreign policy interests. Other than that it’s great.

Inept American diplomats and politicians allow third world countries to walk all over our interests in the UN.

Without our financial support the organization would fold because other nations fail to pay their share.

UN "Peacekeepers" have been everything from incompetent to disgraceful.

The arrangements for election of the President of the UN is structured so that an American can never hold the position.

Some of the committees are a farce, such as having Cuba and Viet Nam as members of the UN Human Rights Council.

The City of New York loses millions in revenue due to UN members failure to observe local laws, pay traffic and parking tickets, etc.

Efforts continue to make the UN a World Government and have our government subordinate to UN policy. That is the real problem.

Excellent point ... I forgot that Cuba and Vietnam are on the UN Human Rights Council.

I have to ask ... does anyone out there in TOTV land really think that having Cuba / Vietnam on the UN Human Rights Council is a peachy idea?

I prefer not to think of the "U.N." Generously corrupt, it has no use for the United States other than to take our funding. Largest spy network on U.S. soil. My blood pressure is going up, so I'm out.

I am with you. Why anyone gives this corrupt and annoying group any kind of attention is beyond me. As with so many good ideas, it is a farce who has long outlived it usefullness if it actually ever had any. It is a COVER GROUP for so much crap.

No! Out of this country. We pay 25% of the cost of this corrupt organization. I say no more support at all. In 2009 we paid more than $6B to the UN. This is not a joke, but I understand what you mean.

I concur with all you say, especially the last statement. Unfortunately our current POTUS and Secretary of State are supporters of this effort.

The concept as originally thought of, was great. The UN has failed to come anywhere near the intended purpose it was set-up for. IMHO

Woodrow Wilson and FDR must be rolling in their graves to see what this organization has become.

I don't think much of the UN and it has ceased. or never was effective, in creating world peace and preventing wars.

I think many Manhattanites would love to see it moved out of the USA. Traffic jams, diplomats who flaunt out laws, etc.

I know this won't work or change your obvious anger with those with whom you don't agree but many of us change as we age. Many of us change as we age. I have always thought it because that we have gained a lot of information that helps us make value judgments.

When I was much younger and saw those big signs that said "GET US OUT OF THE UN" I would think, what is wrong with some people??????

Now I am neutral. In ten years? Who knows?

I think that it is common to become more moderate as we gain more wisdom.

I know that you will not change anyone's mind by making scathing remarks.

If you believe something, defend it with an argument.

I know I feel so defensive of Israel because I have known and loved many Jewish friends and because the Holocaust happened at about the time I was born.

Kitty, I am sorry that you would oppose the rebuilding of some of the infrastructure in Gaza to be supervised by the UN. It is not to be financed by the UN although obviously there are costs in their supervision task. You are of course aware that this agreement was made by Israel with the PA to attempt to assure that construction materials delivered are used for civilian purposes not things like tunnel building.

UN brokers agreement to start Gaza rebuilding | Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/09/16/un-says-it-brokered-agreement-with-palestinian-authority-and-israel-to-start/)

The surest way to keep the radicals in power is to keep the population in poverty and full of desperation. Please try to remember that if there had not been a United Nations, there would not have been the creation of the state of Israel. This is exactly the kind of reason we need a UN. Only such an organization would have standing with both Israel and the PA to attempt such a mediation. Or of course they can endlessly slaughter each other and never again attempt any form of cooperation which might lead to some peaceful solution.

I am always interested in learning about things. Please do provide some evidence for your claim that the United Nations (not sure why UN is in quotes in your posting) is the largest spy network on US soil. I am aware that the US has been accused of spying on UN leaders.

WikiLeaks: US diplomats 'have been spying on UN leadership' - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8166438/WikiLeaks-US-diplomats-have-been-spying-on-UN-leadership.html)

If your assertion is simply that some members of delegations may gather intelligence, it would be just as reasonable to assert that some or most members of the embassy of any nation have a covert role. I don't see anyone suggesting we close all the embassy and consulate offices. Please take a few calming breaths before replying as I do not wish to be responsible for your hypertensive stroke.
