La Traviata
Sunday, January 11, 2015 - 3:00 PMOriginally set in the ornate salons of 19th century Paris, La Traviata ("The Fallen Woman") tells the story of Violetta, a famed courtesan who enjoys her carefree life, but longs for passion. She falls deeply in love with a young respectable nobleman, but their affair is cut short by his family's disapproval and her frail health. Most will recognize the plot of La Traviata from its adaptation for Baz Luhrmann's 2001 Australian-American jukebox musical Moulin Rouge! and J. F. Lawton's classic 1990 movie Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, also based on Alexandre Dumas' 1848 novel The Lady of the Camellias. This production is fully-staged and directed by Italian stage director and tenor Andrea Elena. The production will feature the Resident Artists of the Central Florida Lyric Opera with special international guest stars Takako Yamamoto (Japanese Soprano), Melissa Briozzo (Italian Soprano), and tenor, Oscar Feliu all under the baton of Maestro Bill Doherty and the Central Florida Lyric Opera Orchestra. Performed in Italian with English supertitles.
Something Wonderful
A Tribute to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
Sunday, February 15, 2015 - 3:00 PMRichard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein! Together, they created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre. With Rodgers composing the music and Hammerstein writing the lyrics, five of their Broadway shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, were outstanding successes, as was the television broadcast of Cinderella. Among the many accolades their shows (and film versions) garnered were thirty-four Tony Awards, fifteen Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and two Grammy Awards. Their musical theatre writing partnership has been called the greatest of the 20th century. This tribute concert is performed by the Resident Artists of the Central Florida Lyric Opera with Maestro Bill Doherty at the piano.
