I am looking to get a shih Tzu puppy but recently moved here and am afraid to buy from a breeder that I don't know or has been recommended. I'm afraid of puppy mills and unhealthy puppies. I've had shih Tzu's before but bought both from reputable breeders in NJ and the pups were wonderful. Any help will be appreciated.

Went to AKC.org (American Kennel Club) and below is the breeder which came up. It appears as if she is 50 miles from TV's. Good luck!!!

Check her out first. We once drove 4 hours to get a dog highly recommended from the AKC. Turns out it was indeed a puppy mill, and I had to sadly leave them all behind. I reported them to the AKC, however, and they are no longer on their website. I'm not sure if they are still in business, but I also reported them to their county animal shelter.

You can find wonderful pups in the shelters. Our Lola was less than a year old and in a high kill shelter in Naples. She now has her forever home. You could not ask for a sweeter, more devoted, pup. She is a little treasure and is a purebred cream liver shih Tzu. You do not have to use a breeder.

I agree with Samhass. We always had purebreeds, from reputable breeders but now we have two rescue's and they are also great dogs. Consider a rescue, they are the best.

Go to some dog shows. Talk to the handlers. They'll steer you to the good breeders. They frequently know of dogs which need to be rehomed, rescued, etc. good luck in your search.
