The simple answer is that those charged with containing this deadliest of deadly diseases have both past and present failed to show they are competent and hence the public at large just does not trust them.
"In 1948 the United Nations chartered the World Health Organization (WHO) granting it authority for directing internal health work.
Over 30 years it has shown a deteoriation for dealing with epidemics and on 4 occasions failed to deal effectively with major outbreaks.
In 1980 WHO underestimated the AIDS/HIV outbreak which prompted the UN in 1994 to create Joint UN Program on AIDS/HIV (Unaids)
In 2009 WHO was slow to respond to the H1N1 flu pandemic. an investigative panel in 2011 slammed WHO for lack of transparency, poor external communication, management conflicts and needlessly complex.
In 2010 WHO failures in dealing with Haiti's cholera out break that spread so fast because of bureaucratic bungling it reached Dominican Republic, Cuba and Mexico.
WHO today is dealing with Ebola which has spread to seven countries, a disease which was discovered in 1972 and where Dr. Piot founder of Unaid blames WHO's regional office in Africa calling it incompetent............WSJ 10/22/14"
As a side bar Ebola Czar Klain was the PR guy who instructed VP Joe Biden during the H1N1 scare to strongly emphasis to the public not to travel which about shut the entire world down and that the White House had to walk back.
If you note much of the news about Ebola is what the experts are doing or not doing and not the disease itself.

That is in Nigeria where our leadership has had no hand in it. Congratulations to what the Nigerians accomplished.
It is a different story here in the USA. There is no consistency...there is no plan...there is no leadership...unlike Nigeria everything to do with ebola here at home is politically driven. The politicians only objective is re-election....NOTHING else!

The irony of this whole Ebola situation is that the same people that want government out of their business are the ones that are now asking every government agency known to man to now come in and rescue them. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Take responsibility for yourself.
Stay off of airplanes. The plane you may be boarding in Orlando, or New York, or Chicago might have been carrying passengers from Western Africa yesterday.
Stay off of cruise ships. Cruises are notorious for having infections.
Stay out of hospitals, nursing homes, or any medical facility including doctor's offices. Any place where sick people congregate is where germs abide.
Stay away from crowds.
Stay out of public swimming pools. These have more than their share of bodily fluids...enough said.
A little common sense can go a long way.

You are correct: One should take responsibility for oneself. Unfortunately, many have been taught that personal responsibility only applies when it serves to protect the junk food industry.
Death by heart disease: One every 35 seconds
Death by cancer: One every 56 seconds
Every six minutes one American dies in a hospital from a medical error or lethal infection.
Death by traffic accident: One every 12 minutes
Poisoning: One every 27 minutes

You can go the the grocery store and the risk is minimal. The point is, if you are worried about it, stay away from crowds as much as possible and stay away from places where sick people congregate. At this stage I wouldn't worry. And, if by chance things got a lot worse, people could wear some form of protection, or not.

Bull. It's not about us who don't have to fly.
Our young military men and women have to fly on commercial flights when going to and from furlough.
All the pilots, flight engineers, flight attendants, baggage handlers, gate workers, etc. have to be on board the planes and in their ground positions.
The airport janitorial staff have to handle and breathe near soiled Kleenex, paper towels, soiled menstrual pads, etc., and so do the garbage collectors and haulers.
The TSA have to touch and breathe next to sweaty people and their belongings just gripped by people wiping their runny noses with their hands or who are emptying their pockets of their soiled handkerchiefs or tissues.
The nurses, technicians, doctors, firemen, and paramedics have to be on duty on the front line where infected people come first when they're vomiting, have diahrrea, etc.
The hospital housekeeping and laundry staff have to be in place to change soiled bed linens, haul the bins to the laundry, empty the bins and do the laundry.
Cafeteria workers have to handle and dispose of napkins people spit into and blow their noses on, and leave on the tray or cafeteria table!
And then possibly exposed, they go home to their families and nurses like the ones from Cleveland Clinic go back to work with their already sick patients who often are immune compromised.
Etc etc etc etc etc

I believe I just read this morning that those who were quarantined because they were on the same flight as one who had Ebola, were all cleared of having the disease. So flying is not dangerous. For those who don't have to fly, if they are fearful, don't fly!!

One non-resident died of Ebola out of a population of 330,000 million. What would that percentage be? It's pretty good odds, but I will take my own advice and take responsibility for my own safety.

No, we want government out of deciding what maximum size the gas-station soda cups have to be, like we're too stupid to figure out we could buy two 16-ounce bottles when the 32-ounce cup has been made illegal--as the new ebola czar was involved in.
And we want government out of banning the use of salt by restaurant chefs/cooks in New York, when any half-decent cook knows that adding a teaspoon or less of salt to a big kettle of boiled potatoes or pasta will flavor it enough that most will not want salt shakers on the table.
And we expect the CDC, Homeland Security, State Department, Justice Dept., Secret Service and the presidency to protect us from foreign and domestic enemies like ISIS--who would drool over the scenes of sending an Ebola-infected suicide bomber into the crowds at the Macys Parade or another marathon, to blast his infected blood/guts all over hundreds of victims crawling on the ground and gasping for breath and looking for their childrens' legs.

Buried in a Dell computer captured in Syria are lessons for making bubonic plague bombs and missives on using weapons of mass destruction.
"…...But after hours upon hours of scrolling through the documents, it became clear that the ISIS laptop contains more than the typical propaganda and instruction manuals used by jihadists. The documents also suggest that the laptop's owner was teaching himself about the use of biological weaponry, in preparation for a potential attack that would have shocked the world.
The information on the laptop makes clear that its owner is a Tunisian national named Muhammed S. who joined ISIS in Syria and who studied chemistry and physics at two universities in Tunisia's northeast. Even more disturbing is how he planned to use that education:
The ISIS laptop contains a 19-page document in Arabic on how to develop biological weapons and how to weaponize the bubonic plague from infected animals.
The ISIS laptop contains a 19-page document in Arabic on how to develop biological weapons and how to weaponize the bubonic plague from infected animals.
"The advantage of biological weapons is that they do not cost a lot of money, while the human casualties can be huge," the document states.
The document includes instructions for how to test the weaponized disease safely, before it is used in a terrorist attack. "When the microbe is injected in small mice, the symptoms of the disease should start to appear within 24 hours," the document says.
The laptop also includes a 26-page fatwa, or Islamic ruling, on the usage of weapons of mass destruction. "If Muslims cannot defeat the kafir [unbelievers] in a different way, it is permissible to use weapons of mass destruction," states the fatwa by Saudi jihadi cleric Nasir al-Fahd, who is currently imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. sunnyatlast: I believe that far too many people do not have a clue as to how much the government is running our lives. I guess it is going to take a Wlliam Wallace to wake them up FREEEEEDOM.
Interesting point. I have a theory about what brought much of that about and would like to test it out in a separate thread. Not sure the best way to do it but I'll try. This may take a few minutes.

It's also been proven that "Knowledge is power."
Power to take common sense precautions at a personal and national governmental level.
common sense at the personal level is certainly doable.
common sense at the national governmental level (political level) ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! Would require acknowledging a difference between right VS wrong which is also politically impossible!!

Well the United States as the dubious honor of having the most Ebola cases outside West Africa. Have you noticed that government has not mentioned the possibility of south border crossings to get around airport security clearances and the number of new cases in West Africa is being under-reported

Don't forget the north border crossings. Canada and the US has a very long unprotected border. Those ebola infected jihadist suicide bombers can easily cross into Minnesota at Lake of the Woods disguised as fishermen on a holiday outing.
We never hear of that real possibility from the lamestream media, do we?

Ebola Death Toll Nears 5,000 Out of More Than 10,000 Cases: WHO - NBC News (http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/ebola-death-toll-nears-5-000-out-more-10-000-n233776)
There have been four cases of Ebola diagnosed in the US - Thomas Duncan, the two nurses, and the doctor. Any others you can think of?
There have been 10,114 cases reported in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, so yes, I guess you could say the US is second with four cases right behind 10,114 reported cases in Western Africa.

Experts keep telling us its not a problem but the virus jumps and it changes depending on its host and so the anti-hysteria attempts create hysteria. People understand that they live with the threat of cancer, heart attacks terrorist attacks etc but it doesn't make it any easier when they believe their government can't stop an unknown( Ebola) popping up here.

Its a long way of saying don't jump to conclusions...viruses keep changing and so we have plenty of unknowns unknowns competing with known knowns
WHO CDC please don't exercise conceit exercise extreme caution

The big frustration being minimized and smokescreened is that the ebola carrier who brought it into the U.S. should have been denied entry to the U.S. without ebola even being in the picture with him:
"That is five strikes against his application (for a visa):
- Single
- Unemployed
- Liberian (5th highest overstay rate of any country in the world)
- Has recently resided outside of his country of citizenship, displaying weak ties there
- Sister living in the United States.
Together, all these factors should have weighed very heavily against the issuance of a visitor's visa to Duncan. He clearly appears unqualified."

Worse yet, the government officials who could actually DO something immediately to limit travel from Liberia did not even listen to one of their own, fiercest voices--Rep. Grayson--in July:
"The dreaded Ebola virus has spread from the jungle into major cities in West Africa, and at least one American congressman believes it’s time to ban citizens of the three hardest-hit countries, as well as foreigners who recently visited them, from entering the U.S.
Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., requested the travel ban in a Tuesday letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Secretary of State John Kerry."
