We just recently bought a home in Mira Mesa, but won't be able to live there for a couple of years. We would like to rent the home until we can make the move. Does anyone have any recommendations for reputable property management companies?

Best way to go is to rent it yourself with a good home watch. Probably the worst way to go is with Hometown Properties.

I have been here 14 years, won't recommend anyone. Recommend you rent it on your own.

I agree...I have tried 5 or 6 property managers over the years, and they were all bad...just out for their commission. Didn't do anything to earn it. I gave them all the clients...one of the clients has been a repeat customer for over 14 years. The Property Manager I had, did find a 6 month tenant once, but that turned out to be a disaster. She didn't screen them and caused me to loose about $5000 when the tenant destroyed the inside of the house (non-smoking house, but it had cigarette burn marks all over the carpeting, bedspreads, sheets, graffiti on wall and furniture, 4 broken lamps, things missing , etc etc etc) and she did not do a walk-thru before giving their deposit back. I would never use a property manager again. I do it long distance from California and it is much much easier.

We wouldn't consider renting our OBX property without a management company. In The Villages, the options are far better to advertise your property and find a home watch you are comfortable using. A management company will take care of the advertising, lease, collecting the rents, cleaning, and paying necessary taxes. A home watch will oversee the property, be on call, and you are responsible for all the other items.

We settled in March and have had tremendous success with renting the property ourselves until we can retire. By doing this, we save a tremendous amount of money with management fees. There is one management company, when we were checking, that charged the owner to stay in their own home. I understand they may limit an owner to 14 days because that is the IRS rule, but to charge is simply ridiculous.

It will be more work for you to handle the rentals yourself, but you will gain financially.
