The Daily Sun did not say anything about how he passed. Needless to say, how great was his accomplishments, in building this beautiful community, that his father started with Al Tarrson.

RIP - Gary.

As new residents of TV since February, we pinch ourselves every day that we made it here. Mr Morse was a great visionary and businessman. Cut from the special cloth of many that built this great country early on.

So sad to hear of his passing, and prayers to his family. We certainly hope that they continue on with his vision and hard work. And, would be pleased to see a statue of him in LSL or Brownwood, as his Dad's in Spanish Springs.

"it's a little piece of Paradise...

I had a visitor arrive from "way up north" YESTERDAY. Took him to lunch overlooking LaKe Sumter (which is much better than 32 degrees Of Minnesota autumn) .

I said I'll take you up Buena Vista then down Morse . We barely had time to see the majority of the community before had to leave. All he could do was shake his head and say "I can't wait till I retire"

Just for one day can we ALL think with kindness of our loved ones that have passed beyond.

May the Morse family feel the comfort and care from us during these challenging days

RIP Gary Morse -- you gave us a paradise to live in -- now hopefully you go to live in another paradise.

77 is indeed young especially in light of the fact that Harold Schwartz (his father) lived to the age of 93. Reminds us to live every day as if it is our last because one day it will be...

I guess as we get older, our idea of what young is changes. The average lifespan for men in this country is 76. Worldwide it's 71. I try to look at thing objectively and I always say that if you make it to 80, you've done well. Of course there are a few people that beat the odds an live well into their 80s, 90s and even 100s, but they are the exceptions. People dying at 77 is the norm.

I supposed that at this stage in life it's comforting for many of us to think that 76 or 77 is too young to die, but........

I was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of this great man. God Bless you Gary Morse and your entire family. I would love to see a grass root movement start here on TOTV a to have the Villages name something special in his honor, like maybe the Performing Arts Center? I know it is presently designated for his late wife Sharon, but it seems fitting that two magnificent edifices so nearby be named for them.

Gary Morse in a different way can be considered in the same league as Steve Jobs. He was definitely a visionary like Jobs and passed too early like Jobs. What an accomplishment. Please watch over us as his family continues to fulfill the dream he had like The Healthiest and Happiest Hometown in America. RIP. I would recommend a small park and a small non-denominational chapel within, in his honor. Don't think he will like a mausoleum.

I was in the life insurance business for More than twentY-five years and in that business we have to be very aware of life expectancy and mortality rates. While it is true the life expectancy at birth is about 77 for males, that includes infants that die, teenagers that die accidentally, and so on. Life expectancy changes as we live on, as we have survived some of our peers. Life expectancy at age 65 is approximately 83 for males and over 85 for females. At 70 male life expectancy is 84 and female 86. At 77 the life expectancy for males is almost 87 and if you took into account his wealth and assumed relatively healthy lifestyle, plus the gene factor, with his dad living into his nineties, indeed, Gary Morse was rather young to die at 77.

An old friend of mine used to say that a benevolent dictatorship is the best form of government. There is never any gridlock. Decisions get made. You may not always agree with them, but things get done.

Actually your old friend is quite right. In Political Science classes, they teach exactly that, the most efficient form of government. Of course the drawback to it typically is the successorship. Gary seemed to be a rather humble individual, and an inspired leader from most reports. The Jobs comparison is not unjustified. Many wealthy people got that way in shameful ways, and did not make the world around them a better place to live. A few men come along and make a tremendous difference, and they usually are not forgotten.

In everyones life time someone comes along who has had a profound impact on their and others life. The effects of their leadership and ability to see a new world cannot be overstated. Gary Morse was one of those rare individuals who fullfiled all of these qualities. He has left an impact on all of our lives and we are all better off because he lived. I am sure he is in a better place and is able to have the rest he so richly deserves. Of course we wish only the best for his children and grand children and although they have big shoes to fill we can all be secure in the knowledge that they have been raised by a wonderful family and will continue to carry the flag of their grandfather and father. :)

I share my poem with our Villages community with special condolences to the Morse family and friends at Gary Morse's passing.
=======================

Yesterday's New Year

Tick........Tick........Tick........Tick........Ti ck........Tick

After seconds turn to minutes,
and days become weeks, a New Year
becomes yesterday's memories.

Just one second before
the end of time,
flashing thoughts fade,
as the past
subtracts the extraneous.

And loved ones make the
difference,
and still remember
Yesterday's New Year.

Tick........Tick........Tick........Tick

Be humble to one, before Yesterday passes, because
Tomorrow may never come,

just before
the
Future is done.

When two is still one and one.

Before Yesterday's Tomorrow
becomes
Yesterday's New Year

We too feel like we lost a family member. Looking around today at The Villages in light of his passing, all took on a new and deeper meaning, We hope the family of Gary Morse knows how grateful we are for all that he and his family have done to create a place as special as The Villages. With heartfelt sympathy, God Bless Gary and his Family

"“Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there. "

I sure hope the family can sense how deeply saddened and sorry we are for their loss.

All people in leadership have to take so much of the negative, it goes with the territory; and yet seldom do they hear the majority who are very thankful and grateful for their vision. I sure hope they feel how many of us are so very grateful for all that their father did and for all they have continued to do.

BTW I expected to see that Gracie has weighed in on this issue....I have been off line so and hope she has not left this sight for good.

What a shock that headline was Thursday morning. I had a fantasy of running into Gary while walking around LSL and being able to thank him personally for all he and the family have done in creating The Villages. Knowing that would likely not happen, I thought of writing him a note to express my thanks. Alas, I put that off and now it is too late. I do hope he, from up there, and his family are seeing these many kind, warm thoughts and take solace in all the joy they have brought others. For me, I could not have found a better place to enjoy my retirement years. Thank you, Gary, for all that you did to build TV and for instilling into your kids and grandkids an outstanding work ethic. May your legacy live on for many generations to come.

I was in the life insurance business for More than twentY-five years and in that business we have to be very aware of life expectancy and mortality rates. Using that logic, you would be young no matter what age you died. If you reach 77 and died before 87 you have died young?

Using that logic, you would be young no matter what age you died. If you reach 77 and died before 87 you have died young?

I was told by a doctor that if one lives to a certain age, the chances of living five years more, is something, one can expect. Assuming they are in good health.

Dying young is a relative term. My uncle who passed at 99 was one of 11 children.

A brother passed at 99,
A sister passed at 102.
Another sister passed at 104.
Survived by a remaining sister who is 104.

I once asked him what happened to his other 6 siblings. He said, "they are died young", as they were in their 70's.

True story.

IT is not logic it is science, actuarial science. My post was in response to another poster who stated that because the current life expectancy is about 77, that Morse had not died relatively young. People die at all ages for a variety of reasons - actuarial science is simply based on probabilities given the known facts. RIP Gary, I didn't intend to get the thread off track.

The life expectancy for someone who is 93 is 3 years. Would you say if that individual died at 94 that he had died young?

My condolences to the family. Mr. Morse's children speak about many things in this video that show how they learned from him and his father, who started out selling honey at a roadside stand in Michigan.....

It's a nice tribute to a true visionary leader:

Thank you Sunnyatlast, for posting these 2 video interviews with the Morse family.
They are such wonderful, caring, joyful people, with a great purpose and sincerity.
It made me even more grateful for their hard work in building this great place for us to live through our retirement years.
I feel so lucky to be here!

My sympathy to the Morse family for our loss of Gary.

A private man to the end.

:agree:

Plans of a funeral service won't be made public either.

It would have been nice for the many, who would have liked to paid their respects, to this great man.

I like the tradition or culture, that has a funeral service where they are sad that someone has passed, but then party for several days in celebration of, "they are glad that he/she lived".

The current life expectancy of 77 years refers to a male person born in 2014, not one born in 1936. Mr. Morse, who I believe was born in 1936, had a life expectancy of 60.6 years at birth (Source: University of California, Berkeley statistics). So by living to age 77, he did pretty well over his lifespan. I never met the man, but I will forever be grateful for his vision and effectiveness as a manager. He created something special here.

My last post on the subject, as it detracts from the intent of the thread. Life expectancy is not static. It is recalculated constantly based on the newest statistics. Anyone born in 1936 was expected to live 60.6 years based on the facts up to that time. The person born in 1936 is benefited by all the improvements in mortality developed during his/her lifetime, and also by surviving peers that passed earlier. The best and most up to date life expectancy for any person, born at any time is available at ssa.gov. Again, I apologize for the diversion from the thread.

No apology is necessary as I found your info, illuminating.

We all don't know when our final days will be but I think it is highly useful to plan for it, and live as effectively as we can, with our time remaining.

After all, " we are all looking downhill".

I personally would like to have had an event, to honor Gary Morse's memory.

"La Sagrada Familia," the extraordinary magnificent basilica in Barcelona designed by architect Antonio Gaudi, has been described as Gaudi's "Magnum Opus."

The Villages is Gary Morse's Magnum Opus.

The family asked that donations be made to the Villages Charter School. If everyone gave just $10.00 with 100,000 residents total would be $1,000,000. What a way to say that you to Mr. Morse. Add all the employees and businesses on top of that and the result would be unbelievable. I am writing my check today...how bout you!

Can you please tell us where to send the donation? This is a wonderful way to say thank you to Gary Morse for all he has done.

One of my ancestors, on my family tree, was born in 1850 and died in 1957. Also, my grandparents were born in the late 1800s and lived longer than the current average lifespan.

When the father of Gary Morse, Harold Schwartz., died they had a nice memorial ceremony at Spanish Springs Town Square. That's when they placed his ashes in a small compartment under his statue.

I was one of those in attendance and appreciated the fact that they shared the experience with the public. It seemed like the right thing for Mr. Schwartz because he was a man of the people, so to speak.

He used to walk around the villages, say hello, and stop to talk to anyone who had something to say.

My father (not my grandfather) was born in 1876 and died in 1960. I was born in 1940.
