It seems that alot of people here meet people that they new from their childhood or graduated from the same high school. I have not been that successful as yet. I would like to know if anyone lived in the Pelham Parkway area of The Bronx and graduated Christopher Columbus High School. It would be great to meet someone and talk about the old neighborhood.

close but no cigar. Parkchester for me and only when I was little -- St. Helena and PS 103.

And now back to work. I'm falling into bad habits again with this addiction!!

I live in Columbus Ohio but do educational consulting nationally. I was just in Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx a couple weeks ago. It is a small world!

Hi, Evander Childs here. Cousins went to Columbus HS, though. I'm like Linder, came from Parkchester/Zerega Ave. but happy to talk about old days, even though I bet I'm older than both of you!

Hi Floridagal, I lived north of Pelham Parkway in various places (Olinville, Wallace, Barnes...) and taught at Evander Childs in the '60s, but I myself graduated from William Howard Taft. I knew a number of people who went to or taught at Christopher Columbus, though. What year did you graduate, and can you remember any of your teachers?

Hey, KathieI, watch it when it comes to age!... Hope to see you when we get back to TV; will you still be there on June 20? Regards from HB!

Sid, can you imagine if you were one of my teachers?? OMG! However, I graduated (if you wanna call it that) in '59, so we're in the clear there. See, I'm not afraid to give away my age. The youngest 66 you've ever met....

At the rate I'm going on buying, I'll still be there around June 20 so happy to see you and HB. Have a wonderful vacation in oh, la, la, land.... enjoy my favorite food.. Love, Kath

Hi Kath, favorite food? Hmmm, let me think on that one.... Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, bu this is too good! You graduated in '59; I graduated in '58. Respect your elders.... '-)

Had family that lived in Parkchester. Personally, I loved two blocks off the Grand Concourse at 2200 Morris Avenue between 181st and 182nd streets. Went to St. Simon Stock. Lots of friends went to Evander, Roosevelt, DeWitt Clinton, etc. Had many friends who went to parochial school like I did. I have many fond memories of the Bronx. Even ran for state assembly when Nixon ran for his second term of President. Lost to a fellow named Bob Abrams who later became Attorney General.

Left New York in 1971. When did you leave????

Floridagal, born and raised in da Bronx (as Kathie would say). Went to Evander HS and PS 78. Friends in Clinton and Card. Hayes. Lived on Bouck Ave 212th street between GunHill Road and Eastchester Road. Went to Orchard Beach many time which I think is around Pelham and had cousins on City Island. I've talked with Kathie and Sidney L. who actually met my public school principal. Small world. I guess there must be a Bronx club in TV or it sounds like we can start our own!

Johnny, you didn't say what year your graduated Evander? I know, you're younger than meeee, that's okay, I won't feel bad :verymad: :verymad:

Yes, love to have a bronx club if they don't already have one. Don't forget, we have Jim (of ByeNJ fame), not sure that Linda comes from the bronx, but we'll let her attend anyway.

Let's do it. Kathie (duh! Bronx)

There IS a Bronx Club; I've attended a couple of meetings of it. There seem to be relatively few public school grads there. Maybe the Bronx Club needs an infusion of TOTV folk!!!

ConeyIsBabe: I lived down the street from the Highbridge Housing Project, if I remember right. Isn't that the one on University Avenue close to the Washington Bridge that crossed to 181st Street in Manhattan? I lived on Nelson off Featherbed Lane, went to PS 104, then Macombs JHS, and finally Taft, graduating in '58. Actually moved back to upper Manhattan during my senior year when the family home was demolished for the construction of the Bronx's largest parking lot, otherwise known as the Cross Bronx Expressway.

Floridagal: If I do remember right, the three streets you mentioned run north/south. Starting at White Plains Road going east, it's Cruger, Holland, Wallace, Barnes, Matthews, Bronxwood, and so forth. I lived on Barnes north of Astor and later on Wallace north of Arnow. One of my closest friends, with whom I taught at Evander, was a neighbor around the corner--and he's now a neighbor two houses away from us at TV!

It is indeed a small world!!!

I am a member of The Bronx Club, but did not find anyone that lived in the East Bronx.

I use to go to Orchard Beach all the time. My friend and I use to hitch hike our way there every week-end from Pelham Parkway. The buses were too crowded. Would never do that today. Those were the good old days. Also was a member of the Bronx House, if anybody remembers it. It was on Pelham Parkway. Had dances every weekend. A great place to hang out.

When I moved to Brooklyn we use to go to City Island to the greatest seafood restaurant just as you got off the bridge on the right. The name escapes me right now.

Sure do remember the football games between Evander and Clinton! OMG, we used to give them such a hard time, long long time ago, hard to remember, really have to wrack my brains for that. I remember the Evander song, do you? Evander High, hear our cry, we wish you joy for-evvveerrrr. !! Remember?? Gosh are we all nuts?

KathieI...."To and fro as we go....to the battle of the field...we'll sing our song and cheer hoorah horrah! Evander Childs" I cant remember what I ate for dinner last nite, but I can remember that song.
As for the football games with Clinton..I graduated the year they had a major fight out on the streets that they cancelled our PROM as punishment..It was very sad..
We sure had a great time.
I think I went to every football game and every dance from our school to Cardnal Hayes and Mount St Michael. It was non stop..like the villages. Laura

Hey Floridagal...Maybe you called it hitchhicking when those beach busses were too crowded, I called it getting a "pickup". Busses so crowded sometimes 2 or 3 passed before you could get on. And the guys with the convertables knew it and would cruise in the area looking for "pickups"..Met alot of guys that way! (was I nuts now that I think about it)..Those sure were different times. As for dances. I went to OUr Lady of Solice on Sunday nites, St Helenes, Mt St Micaels Hayes and of course Evanders dances..As many as I could fit in on a weekend. Lived on Radcliff Ave near Gun Hill Rd..
City Island had too many restaurants too remember but all the seafood tasted like it just jumped out of the water on to your plate...Used to go to those little penny arcades there too...

ZX: I even remember my Jr. High School song, Henry Hudson, Henry Hudson, Loyal we shall beeeee....... that's nuts... I can't remember what day of the week it is, today is Thurs? No Fri? But I can remember a song 50+ years ago. That is insane...

We went to Our Lady of Solice and St. Helene's Dances also. Bet we met somewhere in our past. Did you dance with those good looking guys who "claimed" to be deaf that's why they needed to hold us EXTRA close?? Oh so dumb we were!!

Love remembering the good ole times, Kathie

Kathie,,,cant remember my Jr High song (you are good)..I bet we did meet at some of the dances> I dont think the kids today have the same opportunities to socialize that we had back then. HYou could go to a dance on Fri-Sat & Sun every weekend. Come to think of it alot of young people today dont know how to dance. As for the boys who were hard of hearing to dance close..didnt take much to convince us did it? Yes we were very naive but we kind of like playing with a little fire...just a little!

Floridagal....Did you shop on Fordham RD...Saturday afternoon shopping with the girls was a ritual..We all had our hair in curlers (the big ones) with those kerchiefs tied with the tail in the back..we would parade up and down Fordham Rd, shop then stop for a soda. The deal was that if you were shopping for clothes on Saturday with your hair in rollers..you must have a date that night,,This was an important statement to make when we were teenagers..right? The good old days... Laura

Use to go to Fordham Road and shop in Alexanders. Got my first credit card at Lerners on Fordham Road and worked one summer at Woolworths on Fordham Road. How about going to the Paradise movie theatre on a Saturday night date. Don't make theatres like that any more.

My HS graduation was held at the Paradise Movie Theater and didnt you just love those twinkling stars? Used to shop Alexanders and Learners too and used to stop at a place called Forbes for french fries and a coke every week. Also Gorman's hot dogs which I thouth were better than Nathan's.. Did you ever go with a group of kids to Janns ice cream parlor to try to eat the "kitchen sink"?

KathieI

zx, yup!! Grad ceremonies held at Paradise Theater, don't remember much about it cause I was crying so hard. Guess I was real happy they let me grad-U-8.... Do you still have your yearbook? I do. Sometime I'll let you look at it. What a kick.

Janns Kitchen Sink, I remember it. Weren't they on Tremont Ave, near the el? Did you ever go to B&K on Westchester Ave., great ice cream and juke box.. After our dates on Saturday night, that's where we hung out. Memories, ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫, Memories, ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫

Hi Everyone ;D,

I am still here in New York but I come to the Villages every summer and when I retire, I will be down there for 6 months at a time.

I remember the good old days.. I lived on Laconia Avenue between Astor and Waring and one block from St. Catherine's Academy. I remember shopping on Allerton Avenue and going to Lanzetta's pastry store in the summer for Italian ices. I didn't go to public school, went to St. Lucy's Elementary School and then Mother Butler HS. My brother went to Columbus and graduated in 1964. I also went to dances at Solice and did get "picked up" with my friends to go to Orchard Beach (yep, Section 13 was the best). You are right, the #12 bus was always too crowded.

It is good to relive the old days (these kids today don't know what they missed ). I am a member of the "Bronx Club" and hopefully maybe can meet with some of you this summer to relive the "old days of Da Bronx"....

Geez, I can't remember the last time I thought--or even heard about--Lanzetta's, the best pastries around the Allerton Avenue area. Thanks for the memory! And the Paradise theater? I think every high school in the Bronx, including mine (Taft) graduated from there!

Lanzetta Pastry shop was so yummy!!!! And Florida girl...St Lucy's ..I went to Immaculate conception grammer school then Aquinas 182nd st but they "asked me to leave at the end of sophmore year" because I was dating a guy in the area (school) and they didnt like that idea too much..I then went to Evander CHilds for the next two years. I rember going to visit the "grotto" at St Lucy's..
Who remembers how fantastic it was when Freedom Land was first built.? Another great place to meet guys..It's now called Co-op City..
Did you love WhiteCastle on Boston Rd? I cant wait till I'm down there permanently and can meet everyone at the Bronx Club....Laura :agree:
