My dentist recommended I have a deep cleaning and recommended a Periodontist. Bottom line is he wants $3,350 to deep clean my teeth. I was shocked but fearful that if I don't get it done I will eventually lose my teeth. :22yikes:
Has anyone had a similar experience?

I am 76 . Have had massive amounts of dental work over those yrs. Never has anyone recommended deep cleaning.
I may be wrong , but this sounds a bit suspect to me. At $3350 , I think a second opinion might be in order,
Hope other posters will comment for you:22yikes:

My hygienist did a deep cleaning and I know it wasn't anything in that price range.

Almost every dentists I went to, recommended a deep cleaning for $640. Thanks, but no thanks.
I was informed by a dental hygentists I didn't need one, and when they see you live in TV, they assume you have money to burn, for dental work
Honest dentists is an oxymoron. I went to another dentists for a very small opening on top of one tooth. He recommended having to remove several things to get to the spot and that costs about $2200. Sorry, but I am not buying them a Mercedes.
I called my old dentists and he thought a deep cleaning wasn't needed. If I listened to the dentists in TV, my teeth are on the verge of falling out, any minute!!!! It's much cheaper to go back to CT, than to listen to the dentists here, that want to rip a person off, for thousands of dollars.
I went to another dentists for a regular cleaning and they tried to tell me I needed about $3500 worth of repairs but them being the nice people they are, it would be only $2100 to me.
I think it is a racket!!!
The search goes on for an honest dentists that my plan will take. :sigh:

I so agree with you. When I visited Long Island in August both my husband and I had to see our previous dentist. He said there is no reason for me to have a deep cleaning. My gums are fine. My husband is another issue. He does have gum disease and could benefit from a deep cleaning done by the hygenist no need for a periodontist. The dentists here are horrible. After three tries we finally found a dentist we trust. Dr. Lesh from Southern Trace Dentist is very honest and we're sticking with him !!
Good Luck.

I can fly to Charlotte NC and visit my dentist twice a year, more if necessary, and still be $$ ahead.

I am 72 years of age and have seen a periodontist for 37 years (no, not the same one) and thankfully still have all of my own teeth with no sign I will lose any. Both my parents had to get dentures; my father required them quite young. Therefore I have always sought high level care for my teeth.
My periodontal cleanings take an hour and are done by a specially trained hygienist who works under the Periodontist's supervision. He checks her work; they monitor pocket depth and conduct other evaluations. Since I have no dental insurance I pay $155. If I were on a plan covering these cleanings it would probably be negotiated down somewhat.
The price quoted by the OP would cover getting braces from an orthodontist and two years of maintaining them! That kind of fee for dental prophylaxis is crazy!
Now if by deep cleaning the periodontist meant surgery, laying open the gums and scraping the roots of the teeth, and reconstructing the gum line to minimize further periodontal disease issues I could understand that price. It runs something over $600 per quadrant for that, maybe $800 nowadays.

I am not affiliated with this dental irrigation (http://tinyurl.com/ptao65n) product in any way, but I cannot recommend it highly enough (there are other brands). Try it for a month before you pay anything to a periodontist -- my wife and I have had significant improvements in our overall oral health from it. I can't speak to every type of gum problem, but for me it prevented the need for any scaling or root planing.

Did this happen to a dentist at Aspen Dental?

After I had the deep cleaning by the hygienist I also purchased an electronic toothbrush, at her suggestion, which has made a huge difference in my gum health.

Go for a 2nd opinion. Such costly procedure was recommended to me also by the 1st DDS I went to here. After a call to my hometown DDS, who couldn't believe that within a 6-months my perfectly healthy gums, would need to undergo this. He suggest I go for a 2nd opinion which I found from Lake Advanced Dentistry located on Hwy 27/441 in Lady Lake. Their web is Best dental care in Florida | Lake Advanced Dentistry (http://www.lakeadvanceddentistry.com). This DDS & his team are excellent in every way: working with your insurance, listening & explaining concerns. Most importantly, read his patients' review of their experience there. Good luck.

We were recommended to Southern Trace Dental Wedgewood Lane TV from a couple of neighbors. Dr Lesh was honest and her deep cleaning was only $115.00 (Periodontal Maintenance). Got a discount for cash (no insurance). They are keepers.

It was recommended to me by the dental hygienist on my insurance plan. I had it done and will never do it again. My mouth was so sore for a week. Its funny...I am hearing people quite often now talk of deep cleaning. I think it is ridiculous!!
I went back to Dr. Williams at Palm Ridge Dental and her dental hygenist even though they aren't on my insurance plan. I will not change again. It was recommended I use a water pic and electric toothbrush and I have for almost a year and haven't had any trouble with my mouth.

Dr. Bonner is a Periodontist in Laurel Manor that I would recommend. He was recommended to me by my former dentist in Tampa. Both my husband and I now use him and are very pleased. You may want to call and ask his charge for the work you may need. Can't imagine ever spending as much as you were quoted for a cleaning.

Thank you all for your input. Dr. Williams partner Dr. Jaber was the dentist who referred me to the Periodontist I wrote about. I'm grateful that so many people are gracious enough to share their experiences.

I see a periodontist in Ocala who I've been seeing for 12 yrs. I also see a local general dentist. I have advanced gingivitis. It WAS very common for me to have abcessed gums until I became a patient of Dr Zaner. 12 yrs ago he did a full mouth deep root scaling & as a result, my gums are the healthiest they have ever been and most importantly, I still have my teeth because of Dr Zaner as well as my well advised home health care. My teeth are cleaned every 3 months alternating with my general dentist & Dr Zaners office. There absolutely is a difference when my cleaning is done by the hygienist at Dr Zaners office. My cleanings at this office is $120.
That being said, Dr Zaner himself is heading towards retirement however his practice is being turned over to Dr Strange who is highly qualified and I will continue to be a patient at this office. I have the utmost trust faith and confidence with this practice & I highly recommend 352-873-6999

Only $115.00? Wouldn't x-rays alone cost that much? And how about the cost of novocaine?

I can relate to that. I had deep cleaning done about 17 or 18 years ago and I too said, "never again!" At the end of the treatment the dentist told me that the problem never goes away completely and so I may need to have it done periodically.
I needed it that one time many years ago because my gums were red and would bleed. But since that time, I get more frequent cleanings and use an electric tooth brush. My gums are pink and healthy and at age 73 I have all but 2 of my teeth. (I lost one in my 20s)
Over the years other dentists have recommended deep cleaning again, starting around 10 years ago. So I changed to a dentist in The Villages not covered by my insurance. I told them I don't want deep cleaning so they put me on what they call "maintenance" and I'm happy with the results.
I also give a lot of credit to my anti-inflammation diet. In my opinion, anyone who consumes a lot of highly processed sugary, starchy foods and soft drinks is asking for trouble.
