View Full Version : Traffic citation for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign

I received a citation the other day for not coming to a complete stop at Cazaras and Enrique. I am the first to admit I did not come to a 100% stop after seeing nothing was coming. My car was still rolling forward. I took a right on Cazaras and up the road was a Sumter County officer setting up radar. When I got up to him he turned on his light and waved me over. He told me I did not come to a complete stop. I agreed with him and he gave me a ticket and said it was 166 bucks. I told him I hadnt had a ticket in 50 years. He said good that I could take that off my bucket list. Has anyone had a similar situation and did you go to court or mail in pyt. Thanks for your response

I would make a formal written complaint to Lt. Wolfe. That Deputy needs an attitude adjustment, and needs to have his chain shortened for awhile.
I would also expect a reply from the Lt., with the results of your complaint.

I have spoken to many people in my career as an insurance guy and heard comments replete with such smart alex remarks by cops. I posted in another thread that this sort of behavior caused me to lose respect for LOE. I have never once heard a person say that a cop while writing a ticket said something like "Gosh I am sorry for having to do this but......................

I have had a couple of tickets in my life and no cop was smart aleck to me and I wasn't smart aleck to them. If you roll through a stop sign, you get a ticket. This is the FIRST place I have ever lived that anyone would question a stop sign means stop.
I am not sympathetic.
I also think that "I am sorry" compared with "whatdyamean I rolled through a stop sign?? Don't you guys have better things to do than arrest law abiding citizens??? Wazzamatta, you short on your quota today????" Each elicits a different response from an officer of the law. I am biased. I was raised in a cop's household and he was a good one and so were his buddies.

I got a speeding ticket years ago in Maryland. When he gave me the ticket he thanked me for my politeness. I went to court hoping that he would not show up. That is exactly what happened, so the charge was dismissed. I like to think that he remembered my politeness and that was why he did not appear in court. My ticket was the only one written by that officer that was on the court docket for that day.

Neither comments were nice. There are always a few smart mouth's in any job.
I imagine they have a lot of people say they have never had a ticket. Being rude is not a good response from a police officer unless someone was being rude to them.no not even then.. I personally have never had a police officer anything be anything but nice. Maybe it's because I cry when I get a ticket. I don't want to, but I am SO embarrassed for screwing up.

I was once pulled over for speeding by a county sheriff in California. His first comment to me was, "Alright, honey, where's your NASCAR license?" After at least five minutes of laughter to the point tears were coming down my face, I handed him my NASCAR license. No ticket and a good chuckle by him as well.
Cops are human. It may not have been the best joke in town, but I sincerely hope he meant it as a joke. Regardless, you earned that ticket. Enrique is a busy street. To not stop when entering is putting yours and others' lives at risk even if you didn't see any traffic.

Good luck in trying to beet this. It did not work for me. If it happens again ask the officer to give you a break. I am so sorry, DO NOT GIVE excuses or admit to not stopping. Once you admit it the officer confirms what he/she observed.

If you did roll through the stop sign - and if you realized you did not come to the complete stop as required by law - man up and acknowledge what you did. Isn't that what we taught our kids?
As for the comment by the officer, it was funny. Take it in the same spirit it was given.

Got stopped for going 29 in a 20 zone. $178 ticket.. I earned it. I was polite to the officer from SCSO and he was polite to me. After the ticket was presented we talked for about 5 minutes. He was a nice guy doing his job. I did not want to contribute to his having a bad day. They work too hard and face perils I never experienced when I was working.

A friend who was an amateur actor/director/musician was stopped and the officer said "Do you know how fast you were going?". Friend's answer " No, but if you will hum a couple of bars I can probably pick it up". The second he said it he wished he hadn't but fortunately it apparently went over the officer's head as all he got was a warning.

My husband was stopped in Indiana in the middle of nowhere. He and his boss were driving to one of their facilities you literally can't get to by air. On a divided highway where he assumed the speed limit was 70, it was really 55.
Our sons had long ago given him a MI vanity plate that said Vietnam Veteran. The young cop who stopped him went back to his car, called in the DL, found no infractions, came back and gave him a warning, saying Thank you for your service. Please slow down.
As they were driving away, his boss was reading the warning to him: Glasses. Color of eyes: hazel. Hair: bald.

There are a number of license plates that will often get you out of trouble...Ex-POW, Purple Heart, Disabled Vet, and believe it or not, Freemason. There are not a lot of cops who are Freemasons, but there are a lot of judges who are. I have a relative who has played this card several times.

It is spelled SUMTER County. I don't believe the County has prospered because of traffic tickets. Unfortunately the growth of the Villages has also given home to more folks pushing the envelope, rushing everywhere and disregarding traffic laws. Rather than vote in new leaders, maybe we should try to impress on new residents that there are laws here too and they should be obeyed.

Ridiculous.

Yes, I know what the law says. What I am saying is that almost no one observes the letter of the law. The few that do are on here screaming about. I have lived in several states and countries and I have seen this behavior everywhere. The Villages is no different and if people are being ticketed for it, it is only because the officer is having a bad day or the local government needs the money.
On top of that the response of the officer in this case was rude, disrespectful, uncalled for and unprofessional. Every person stopped by LE should be treated with the utmost respect and referred to as sir or ma'am unless they give reason to be treated otherwise. I know that they deal with a lot of crap out on the streets. I know the job is very difficult and I also know that they are trained to treat the public whom they serve with respect.

There are those that follow the rules and think of themselves as rule followers. There are those who look for any way they can to go around the rules and think the person in authority is stupid, wrong, and not needed.
The reason that I was tough on my kids and saw that they saw the gravity of certain situations and made it really hard sometimes, is that I wanted them to realize I meant what I said. So that they would respect authority. I told them and my grandkids I wouldn't bail them out, literally or figuratively, and so far we haven't had to do so. I was the authority figure during the formative years because their dad was flying around all over a good deal of the time.
I have never had occasion to personally witness any failure on the part of law enforcement, although I know it does happen that they can be bullies. We knew that some teachers would be tough and unfair and difficult, and we told our kids they could vent and we would listen, but they must do what the teacher expected and we would not go in to defend them if they didn't. All of us have had superiors who were nasty as hell, but if we want to keep a job we have to learn to do what we are told and what is expected sometimes. Rules are there for a reason.
Stop signs mean Stop. In a very quiet neighborhood, it may call for a very brief stop. A curtsy.

I also like Lt.Wolfe, BUT believe it is a disgrace to "entrap" Villagers in order to raise revenue. There are plenty of speeders, reckless drivers to fill the cash register of the local court. It would be interesting to see the statistics of accidents from Carts not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign within a Village. I think the lady who said she had not had a ticket in 50 years was probably telling the truth and the deputy answer was comical but the real problem was using the ability to trap villager's actually trapping them . Sort of sounds like the town north of Ocala that was charged with being a speed trap or the old Ludwicky, Ga. where it was a national disgrace. Hopefully the Sheriff or Lt.Wolfe will recognize the foolishness of this and stop the practice. By the way we have never been stopped for a traffic or moving violation in over 50 years. :mornincoffee:

I would also add.
I think a golf cart seat belt law would help keep people safe but the suggeston will anger others. I also think a bike helmet law would help keep bikers safe but will anger others too. Enforcing these laws would raise revenue and also keep people safe more so then a rolling stop with a golf cart.

Tomwed I agree with your points. We have a seat belt in our cart.I get a little frustrated with those that point to the risks that Officers take. Of course they do and we should all have deep appreciation for their dedication but that does not excuse this "trapping" citizens in order to raise revenue. So others should not lecture me that if I don't like this practice that I am "anti public service".
The Supervisors should assign them where they will do the most good to protect the public and sitting in a street in a Village waiting for an innocent cart driver to not come to a "total stop" at a inter village stop sign is not the best usage of an officer. :mornincoffee:

I thought the bucket list comment was funny. I and I also think that running a stop sign is an accident waiting to happen. I've seen too many of them here between cars, golf carts and one of each. Not pretty and sometimes life-threatening. On the other hand, a neighbor was pulled over last week for "pausing too long" at the right on red at Morse and 466A where there have been many accidents. That one I just don't get.

Seriously? Is that traffic law on the books somewhere? In the northern states I've lived in, turning right on red was an option, not a must. I have a couple of times down here opted not to turn right on a red light when I didn't think it was safe.
Is it different in FL?

A friend of mine went to court over a speeding ticket. In an effort to get a reduced fine, he told the judge that he had never had a speeding ticket before this one. The judge asked him if that meant that he had never before gone over the speed limit. He told the judge that he had gone over the speed limit before. Then the judge told him he was lucky that this was his first ticket and did not reduce the fine.

I also want an answer to pausing too long making a right on red light situation.
I'm sure many times I'm the jerk up front who is not turning when I could. I can live with that.
But by pausing, I'm taking a chance on getting a ticket....... I'll change my ways.
People in this forum seem to be pretty good about finding and copying the exact law for others to read. Thanking you in advance.

Didn't you mean LEO's (law enforcement officer's)? I retired as one, my wife is Federal and my son is KCPD Swat. You've lost respect for Police Officer's? Remember that statement the next time something happens to you where you need their assistance.
I always let the person that I stopped, dictate what I did - if they were nice to me, usually I was nice to them and le them go with a warning; if not, I could make their day miserable. So don't categorize all LEO's together.

My thanks to you and your family for your service. I had a career where I didn't have to get up in the morning and my family worry about whether I would be home that evening. The few tickets I got I earned. I was polite to the officers and they to me. LEOs have my respect and gratitude.

You can probably also take not getting any sympathy from anyone on TOTV off your bucket list as well.

This has gone far off the point with attempts at very poor quality jokes, angry readers saying how they deeply respect the police as though some do not and they are special, the question was and is: Is it the best use of the Sheriff's resources by placing them in a Village and having them sit and wait for someone not to come to a complete stop and give them a $166 ticket in order to increase revenue for the court and county business. This is not rocket science and does not require candidates for Mensa to answer the question. Can we stay on point and not use the site to brag of respect for police or make jokes. It really gets very tiresome. The fact that I have a life time gold card membership in the PBA has nothing to do with the question of priority of assignments for the police. How would you answer the question and why it is your opinion?:mornincoffee:

Penn, I agree with you. And, the OP hasn't posted since the thread was started. Part of me wonders if the thread shoud be closed.
One question that was asked: would we go to court of mail in payment. I would mail in payment and accept responsibility.

Actually, the OP described the situation concerning the ticket and asked this question, "Has anyone had a similar situation and did you go to court or mail in pyt." So the point of the thread is to give input to the OP about whether we have experienced a situation similar to theirs and, if so, how did we handle it? If you want everyone to stay on point, then that is what should be addressed.

This part's off topic also. The OP never asked what was the proper priority of the police. He asked if anyone else had gotten a ticket and if they'd gone to court over it.

This thread veered far off topic with many personally directed remarks and high emotion. Since the OPs specific question was never addressed, thread will be closed.
