Has anyone had surgery for an enlarged prostate? If so who did it and where and was it successful?

I had it a year ago, a TURP. It was done by Dr Dersch in Ocala.

Was it successful in alleviating all problems?

A good friend here in the Villages chose " proton therapy " which worked very well .
It does less damage to healthy tissue than radiation . He had prostate cancer .
The treatments worked and he has been cancer free now for over a year .
However the treatments required a lot of trips to Jacksonville over a 6 week period of time .
I understand that there this form of treatment is now available in Orlando .

All surgeons have both successful and unsuccessful outcomes. The real question is, "what percentage of his procedures are successful and what percentage end with complications."

You need a "high volume" surgeon to do the procedure in a high volume hospital, rather than someone who has performed the operation only a few times. A surgeon may boast about having performed thousands of operations but may now be doing it differently. So the question would be, "what is his success rate for the new technique?"

Good luck trying to find this out. Hospitals are suppose to keep track of this but won't tell you. They will recommend doctors who are board certified but I don't think that's the whole story. After recommending a doctor or two, they will tell you to make an appointment and ask the doctor. What kind of proof is that?

And, for any doctor recommendations made here, I doubt you will find out what percentage of patients end with complications.
