Okay, in the back hall we have one ceiling light that works off two switches about 6' apart. We had the bright idea to change them and put in rocker switches so we bought the 3way switch Home Depot recommended and low and behold...we can't figure out how to do it. Help in Alhambra.

It's very important to know where the power is being supplied, either at one of the switches or at the light itself. Look carefully at the wiring coming in at each switch and you should be able to tell or get a very inexpensive voltage tester for a couple dollars.
This should have you covered:

Google "3 way switch wiring diagram" and you should get several very useful sites to help you with the wiring. I have the tools to determine if any of the wires are energized, however, I am not a licensed electrician, so I cannot work on your house. In a former life, I was a professional electrical engineer. Send me PM if the goggle links do not help.
