There was a segment today on CBS New Sunday Morning about Cat Stevens and his return to singing and touring.

Nope. Nuh uh. Sorry, dude. I probably know the words to every one of your songs, but much like my Navy vet brother-in-law's continued aversion to Jane Fonda, I do not forgive or forget, Yusaf.

If he came here, would you go to one of his concerts?

Nope. For the same reason. On the thread about what actor/actress you want to spend a day with, I started to write one and pick Jane Fonda. Specifically so I could give her a piece of my mind and a one way ticket to Vietnam in coach. But decided that was not in the spirit of that thread so deleted it.

I attend a meeting once per month at a local American Legion post. I've noticed the men's urinals have a splash stop (sorry for the graphic language, ladies) of Hanoi Jane sitting on an anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi.

What is it that you do not forgive or forget him for?

For supporting the fatwa against Salman Rushdie by Ayatollah Khomeini: "He must be killed. The Qur'an makes it clear if someone defames the prophet, then he must die."

Which, yes, Yusuf subsequently said he was only re-stating the rule for blasphemy and was using "dry humor" about these "stupid and offensive jokes" he made on a talk show:

Robertson: You think that this man deserves to die?
Y. Islam: Who, Salman Rushdie?
Robertson: Yes.
Y. Islam: Yes, yes.
Robertson: And do you have a duty to be his executioner?
Y. Islam: Uh, no, not necessarily, unless we were in an Islamic state and I was ordered by a judge or by the authority to carry out such an act perhaps, yes.

With regard to an upcoming protest where an effigy of Rushdie was to be burned:
Robertson: Would you be part of that protest, Yusuf Islam, would you go to a demonstration where you knew that an effigy was going to be burned?
Y. Islam: I would have hoped that it'd be the real thing.

I don't buy his later spin doctoring, or his return to music after calling it a sinful occupation for three decades. I also wonder why this is no longer the religious image he chooses to present of himself to the world.

What you note is completely accurate. He no longer projects this image because it doesn't suit either his financial or religious needs. That is not to say he doesn't continue to have those beliefs. But remember, in Islam, it is permitted to lie to infidels.

Thanks, I thought maybe it was something along the lines of writing sappy songs. I know that's what I won't forget about him or why I wouldn't go see him.

If you hit the splash stop just right at the American Legion Hall in Ft. Myers her head spins around.

We knew a joke was coming, so thanks for the punchline. :)

I never was a Cat fan, and as to Jane, the rest of her family seemed ok. I did two tours in Nam

Jane is the only person I have ever seen there.
