Really there are no mountains either route......

I-75 splits off north to Knoxville just before Chattanooga. If you want to go to Nashville to pick up I-65 there you would take I-24 just before Chattanooga at the split to Nashville. I-24 connects with I-65 in Nashville. At Chattanooga if you take I-24 to Nashville the only real problem might be Monteagle about 50 miles north of Chattanooga. It's the closest thing to a mountain you'll have to negotiate either route but it isn't really a problem to drive. I-75 splits north from Chattanooga to Knoxville and is not bad but there are some good long hills between Knoxville and Lexington KY but no mountains. When you reach Lexington KY you would then go I-64 west into Louisville KY.

Overall I would go through Nashville and hit I-65 north to Louisville if a lot of hills were a concern. The closest thing to a mountain either way is Monteagle on I-24 so I-75 might be the best if a long incline up and down would be a problem. I-65 is 6 lanes almost all the way from the TN line to Louisville and is being widened north of Bowling Green now so there could be construction work.

You could take the 840 off I-24 just west of Murfreesboro over towards Lebanon and exit on Hwy 109 to Gallatin and then Portland and hit I-65 well north of Nashville right at the TN and KY border to save about 50+ miles. There will be some but not much 2 lane road on this part until the road work to widen 109 is finished.
