Does anyone know what is happening on the large tract of empty land on the right side of Buena Vista north of 466. The field was a paddock at one time. Now it is stacked out with survey orange flags all over the field. On the map it is listed as the Harold S Schwartz Wildlife Preserve. So why the stakes?????

They are getting ready to build a 5 story office building. I believe that it is already 40 percent rented out.

You are joking........Truthfully , is that something new. I haven't seen anything about it!

It is listed as a wildlife preserve ::) ::)

Beady,

I asked a similar question last Sept and didn't get any replies. After that, for some reason, I was led to believe this was a owl preserve and the stakes had to do with owls.

My old thread: https://www.talkofthevillages.com/smf/index.php/topic,2159.0.html

I think Greener might be talking about a building ON 466, near BV...not the area north of the polo fields ON BV you are referring to.

OK, someone who lives up there between Polo and Savannah Center....please tell us about the staked out field?

I believe they must have misunderstood where I was refering to.

07......You are right , now I remember references to the owls. Thanks for reminding me. I have never heard of staking for owls, but what do I know.

Owls perch on the stakes and watch for rodents to eat. I have never seen any so would guess since they are nocturnal birds that they are there at night. I read awhile back that I fox was trapped and removed from
there because it was eating the owls.

Believe you are talking about burrowing owls. My Dad had them on a vacant lot next to him in Fort Myers. He put up cross stakes for them to perch on. They dig holes in the ground and live in them. Very cool to watch them, but heartbreaking when hard rains came as many times the young would drown when the holes got washed out. My Dad used to put so many stakes out it looked like a cemetery! In Ft. Myers, people could not build on lots that had these owls living there.

Yes, they are ground owls. I never knew there was such a thing, until I moved to Boca Raton 28 years ago, and F.A.U. (Florida Atlantic University ) are the Owls, of the burrowing kind!! I always thought it a rather lame nick for a college, but at least I learned something!

They sure look like survey stakes to me............

fumar

even have red flags tied on them.........yup survey stakes....unless owls can tie knots

Perhaps the red flags are to scare away the foxes. :dontknow:

Similar to those revolving owls (no relation to the ground owls, but ironic) people put on their boats to keep the sea gulls away????? ::) ::)

I believe the the flags on the stakes may be for the mowing crew. When I drove by there today I noticed a large tractor mower.

Now I cannot swear that this is absolutely true beyond question but I heard from a person who, while not being a reliable source himself, knows the hair dresser of the cousin of a reliable source. He said that The Developer was facing a loss in the tax relief they received for the owl preserve. Therefore, they are tearing out the owl habitat and will soon be building a large multipurpose facility. It is hoped that the new facility will be a popular destination for residents. Among the prospective tenants are a whore house, a museum of chiropracty, and the headquarters of the Sumter Co Democratic no, I won't go there a Starbucks Coffee Shop.

Actually you are mistaken Muncle. I myself heard from a more reliable source( my sister-in-laws podiatrist) that there was to be a training college for curmudgeons, a fencing field, a class for friends of Bill, and a marriage retreat house.

Definately a golf cart track.

The Village ladies sing this song,
Doo-da, Doo-da
The golf cart tracks five miles long
Oh, de doo-da day

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

Oh, the high speed Yamaha still is boss
Come to a mud hole and cut across,
Oh, de doo-da day

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

I went down there with a bottle of gin,
Doo-da, doo-da
I came back home without a win
Oh, de doo-da day

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

The E-Z-Go cart and the big black Club
Doo-dah! Doo-dah!
Lost the race and went to the pub
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

The big red cart in a big mud hole
Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Can’t touch bottom with a ten foot pole
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

Old Mr. Morse he owns the track
Doo-dah! Doo-dah!
Tax man say no money back
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

They were flying like a railroad train
Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Jan heard a whistle, here we go again
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a big red cart
Somebody bet on the gray

See them flyin’ on a ten mile heat
Doo-dah! Doo-dah!
Round the race track, then repeat
Oh! doo-dah day!

Goin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a golf cart track
Somebody bet on a bay

I lose my money at the golf cart track
Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Mama said she don't like that
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Villages Talk is lots of fun
Doo-dah! doo-dah
Topic police are on the run
Oh! de doo-dah day!

Cabo,

Well done!!! Sounds like you were sipping on some of that gin too.

You should submit this to the Daily Sun for their Sunday poetry section.

I was up on 466 today and remembered these posts. Where on 466 is the site to which you were referring? What's the source of your info that a 5 story building is planned and that it's already 40% rented?

If it's down by the motel east of Buena Vista, I hope it doesn't interfere with the new dog track they're planning to put on the Arnold Palmer golf course behind the water tower. The developer figures the track grandstand, scoreboard, and fireworks display is the only way to block the view of that ungodly ugly birdcage with the waterslide. And I have this on the best authority.
