Was sleeping when a loud noise, almost like a motor revving began about 1:00 a.m. (Sat.) It wasn't like anything I've ever heard. Got up and checked...it sounded to be outside coming from East like over by the horse farm near Amelia. It lasted for maybe 10 minutes or better then stopped.
Did anyone else hear it??

Probably some drunk firing up their Harley or race car. Rice rockets aren't noisy until they open them up, But Harley noisy on start up.
Only vehicles I know that can have NO mufflers and License plates. :eclipsee_gold_cup:

I wouldn't say it sounded like a Harley as I know what that sounds like since (up north) we had neighbors who'd do what you said and it's not that. To us, it sounded somewhat like some sort of implement machinery or even a plane that was having trouble and flying really low. Don't think it was the latter. Though it did ebb and flow so maybe some sort of vehicle who was driving through our neighborhood. It was loud and mysterious for sure.

I heard something much worse around 7 pm near us. It almost sounded like a hyena or coyote. It was like a dog barking with a yodeling noise. I could tell our dog was trying to figure it out as well.

The noise was grinding and revving together but not like anything we've heard before. VERY loud...it almost sounded like it was in our backyard at one time....then would sound like it was a bit further away. Kind of disconcerting when one is awakened to that.
As for the animal sound...it might have been a coyote as they do live here too. We saw one in our neighborhood one evening and they've been spotted crossing golf-courses as well.

I heard it too, directly East from Amelia on or near Cherry Lake(?) Rd. At first I thought it was someone leaving a neighbor's house (they have a 30-something child living there) and was gunning the engine because it was so cold out. When it continued, I went outside and couldn't believe how much louder it was. I also thought it sounded like a plane who's engine was sputtering. Also sounded like a tractor pull. So I called the police & the man said they had gotten several calls from people in our area. Someone thought it sounded like an airboat but why would someone have an airboat out at 1am? Lasted about 15 minutes. I think I'll call the non-emergency police ph# to see if they found out what it was.

Could it have been the Villages spraying for bugs? They go through the neighborhoods at odd hours of the nights with a vehicle with a strange noise.

But do they spray now? It is very cold for mosquitoes.
I am curious about the booms and sounds. Very strange.

I live in Hadley and heard it also. I thought it was coming from the street behind us but behind that is the farm so maybe it was coming from the farm. It sounded like it was almost in our backyard. At first I thought it was someone gunning an engine but after it kept on going I realized it wasnt. Then thought maybe "street cleaner" ?? It was very loud and strange.

I know you will find this hard to believe but I remember hearing that in Hadley last year. Can't remember what time of year it was but sounded exactly like what you are describing. Never did find out what it was.

It did last a long time (more than a gunning of an engine to warm up). Like other posters here it did sound close. Hadley and Amelia for sure....
Did anyone find out what caused it??? Still curious!!
