Anybody else having trouble with their computer navigating more slowly lately? I've read the link about TOTV, but I find it is a issue with almost anything I try to do or any page I try to load. Banking, shopping, Facebook, almost anything. I called Dell and they take control of the computer and tell me all is well, I've called Centurylink and they tell me I have a strong signal coming in to the house, and my computer does an automatic maintenance to delete cookies and unnecessary history daily. I am befuddled (and slightly annoyed) that everything is taking so long.

Relax Lovey! This is a retirement community and your computer has the right to be slow! My iPad freezes, won't upload pages and is very slow. I believe it's telling me to replace it. Electronics.....

reboot your modem

Yeah...Thanks. I'd better call Centurylink again before I do that. When I called them a few weeks ago, I told them I had been having to do that, and while that usually fixes the problem, they asked me not to because I keep clearing any history on an issue the modem may be having..... It's just so frustrating sitting on the phone with these people...

You could do a speed test at this link, to see what the wi-fi speed is coming in to your house. XFINITY Speed Test (http://speedtest.comcast.net/)

Do you have any friends that have a laptop?

If you are connecting wirelessly, have them come over and see if its also slow for them.
If you use a patch cable, connect the patch cable to their laptop.

Tell me the results.

I have centurylink , and have my Dell all-in-one connected to the modem. They say it is a fiberoptic cable (?). I don't know what patch cable means. Obviously, I'm not very computer savvy...

I want to help you. Do you know anyone that is more computer savvy that you trust and I can talk to on your behalf. I don't want you to be at the mercy of centurylink or anyone else.

Here is a typical system.
The signal that comes into the house via cable is not usable and connects to modem to make it usable. You can connect your computer [laptop] reciever directly to the modem using a cable that looks like this one.
http://jprdirect.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/cables_patch_blue_10_ft-330x330.jpg

The modem is connected to a router.
The router takes the signal and broadcasts it, like a radio tower.

The laptop has a wireless receiver too.

The cable company will test the signal from their end and if it's slow they will fix it.
If the computer directly wired to the modem is still slow then the problem is with the computer.
If it is only slow when it is using the wireless signal then the problem could still be the computer but it might also be the router.

That's why I was suggesting to invite someone over with their laptop and see if it's slow for them too.

Or take your laptop to their house or the public library and see if it runs slow.

This doesn't really fix anything it just narrows the problem down to what's broken.

My best advice, especially if the laptop is more then 3 years old is to buy a Chromebook from Walmart. You have 15 days to decide if you want to keep it. click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromebook)

Be wary of doing this I goggled the above and downloaded it and found it was a fake and let in some really nasty viruses. its usually the first three or four entries on the goggle search but it could be more. My system went berserk.

so now i simply buy my security stuff nothing is free

I agree with rubicon. It used to be a great software to remove spyware but lately they attach so much spyware to the download that causes problems. I use SuperAntiSpyware instead and yes, I pay for it also but it is worth it.

I downloaded mine from CNET, but after a short free trial, I purchased it.

I put a link to the real one.Malwarebytes is the best you can get.If you would use Chrome for a browser you wouldn't get the fakes.IE is loaded with malware.Plus you get a spell checker.

SO...update...after all the speed tests, resets, phone calls to Dell AND Centurylink, and one very kind offer on here to help me, it seems the problem was my router!! I finally got a proactive Centurylink tech, and he told me the next time my computer slowed up on me (after they switched channels several times, etc.), he advised me to unplug and bypass the router and connect my computer directly to the outlet which is where the fiberoptic cable comes in to the house. It is running fine!! I will now call Centurylink back and have them replace the router, at his suggestion. Finally!! Months of annoyance! Once tech even advised me to buy a wireless extender, which helps if you're moving your device around the house, but I am at my desk and connected. Thank God the Walmart employee was a former tech (?). Anyway, thanks much TOMWED for your kind offers to help. With the holidays and company and , and, and, I just finally got around to taking care of some things!!

Oh...somehow I missed a lot of the above posts. I use the Super Anti spyware, but I also have Dell Conceirge service. They told me not to purchase it again when they send me the renewal, because they can download it for free for me. Actually, I never download anything...like JAVA, Flash player when it asks, I am so scared of getting something I don't want...hahaha. I always call them if I need anything updated/downloaded. Also, they told me something to look for..."invisible boxes". When you get a box asking if you wanna download something, they said never just click the NO button. go up to the box and shut it down by the red X in the upper right hand corner. Sometimes, there are invisible boxes over those you can see, and if you dont just shut it, you are inadvertantly clicking on something anyway....imagine???

We use Norton 360 for all of the computers and the android phones. This provides lots of protection at a very reasonable cost, if I recall correctly, round $60/year for 5 devices. Plus they have good to very good service if you run into a problem.

In you all programs list on the start icon you have accessories. Click it and got to system tools. In system tools run disk cleanup and disk defragmenter. This may help.

I don't understand all I know about this stuff but can tell you that after I replaced my 13 year old desk top Dell computer with a new HP all in one computer with 2tb Hard Drive and 8GB Memory it is so fast it scares me. I used to be able to drive down to the mailboxes to check my mail while the old Dell was booting up Windows. Now it is instant. I'm using Comcast.
