I read a review I found online in which the writer had the smartcar for a weekend or so.
Bottom line conclusion was that the transmission was real herkey jerkey and took some getting used to and, most damning, the MPG was not all that good--- high 30's.
He remmended a toyota yaris or similar sized vehicle that would afford some comfort, rear seating and cargo room with only a small difference in mileage than the smartcar.

there's another thread on it here, you can do a search
smartusa.com I think is the US website,
the major plus, as I see it, is it will fit into the 1/2 of the standard 1-1/2 car garage,
I plan to look at 'em when I get to TV in a year or 2,
I also think they're coming out with an electric version in europe, maybe that'll get to the us in a year or two.
Mercedes is the funding corporation, Roger Penske of Penske Racing is the US Distributor
I hear there is a fairly long wait list

also edmunds.com has a review and they have an owners forum, which I found interesting,
it's a niche vehicle, but if it fits your style, might work well
