Lymes Disease

Hello everyone,

I am diagnosed with Borreliose Buergdorfli (Lymes), recently moved to TV, now desperately searching for a Lymes Literate Doctor near TV or at least in reasonable travelling distance.

Can anyone who has been/is being treated for this terrible disease give me any information about finding a doctor specializing - or at least - experienced in this field who has been treated successfully, got things under control?

When my wife and I were in PA we lived in a wooded area, lots of deer. My wife had Lyme twice complete with the Bulls Eye. I had Lyme once. Both were successfully treated with medications. There was a time when Lyme could be fatal, I think those days are gone IF you get early treatment.

Absolutely go to UF Shands. It only takes a little over an hour. Well worth it. It is a teaching hospital and don't mess around with anyone here. There isn't enough diagnosed here and you don't want to mess around with it.

I think many are missing the code word in the OP's message, Lyme literate. That is a term used by a group of patients and doctors to refer to some very non-standard beliefs about Lyme disease (not Lymes) and the organism Borrelia burgdorferi

It is extremely extremely unlikely that any doctor at Shands will be supportive of the non-standard and potentially dangerous treatments that "Lyme literate" implies.

Kitty, you may want to read the link that blueash provided. They are not talking about literate vs illiterate but rather a bad diagnosis called "Lyme Literate" and improper treatments that can result.

Thank you for the information, especially from Kittygilchrist. After spending more than 30 years abroad, I think I may have used the wrong term and I do appreciate the time, effort and knowledge some of you have taken to clarify the term 'Lyme literate'. I acknowledge your expertise in this area, maybe you have treated or been treated with success using conventional methods - will you share your story in more detail? Mainly I was looking for first hand information from persons who suffer/suffered and have been treated and/or are being treated, where they go to do this, what treatment they receive(d), and of course the success rate. First step for me, thanks to the above information is UF Shands in Gainesville. I am very interested in other people's experiences too, information empowers.

Agree with Kitty. Go to Shands at U of F for ANY serious or difficult to diagnose condition. They are wonderful for any medical problem and you can see all your diagnostic studies and medical notes on line. Most physicians accept questions by email and will answer you quickly or tell you to come in for further evaluation.
Also, for your animals, you can't beat U of Fl Vet school for complex med. problems or a 2nd opinion.

I've had chronic lyme for 20 years and have been to several Lyme L. -doctors in the north.
I also have hundreds of papers/studies on lyme . I hosted several support groups and know many
many people with lyme.

The CDC said only this year after denying lyme was epidemic for years now said that 300,000
people contract lyme every year. I know 2 people that died from lyme, confirmed by brain biopsies after death after being told by Dr after Dr that they did not have lyme .

Most doctors are still blind to the current findings and rely on the ELISA test which is not very accurate. Even the Western Blot has problems.
In addition lyme there are 5 or 6 other diseases transmitted by the same tick bite This has been named " Lyme Complex disease"

Update on Lyme Disease and UF Shands. Sadly they are not taking any patients with Lyme (only HIV). I asked for suggestions where to go/what to do and was advised to check with my insurance to see if they would pay for treatment above and beyond 30 days of antibiotics (been through that a long time ago).

Thank you all for the above info, it seems there really is no help here unless you have a LLMD and as discussed earlie,r there is no way of knowing who is good and who is just in it to make some big bucks.

If you have managed to find a LLMD who is trustworthy and serious about treating Lyme patients please, please PM me.
