Happy new Tax Year....
For today, Jan 2nd.... Amazon.com has HR Block tax prep software at 50% off. The 2014 PC "Deluxe" version (no State tax capability) is $16.99.
I have used Turbo Tax for many years.... be warned that they have changed their version options/pricing model this year. If you have investments with capital gains that require schedule D, you will have to buy the "Premiere" versions which they advertise for $90. You might find it discounted elsewhere but nowhere near the $25-$30 that I have paid for it in the past. Online reviews show many TurboTax customers abandoning it this year.... HR Block seems to get good reviews and will import your 2013 TurboTax data file.
Just a heads up for you TurboTax customers.

Thanks Villages07 - didn't realize they could import the info from the previous year.
Downloaded the HR Block last night and the TurboTax info transferred over no problem. Haven't had time to check the program, but hopefully it will be as easy as TurboTax. Great savings on the program - was prepared to pay close to $100 for what I need. Thanks again for the info.

If you do not have any rental property, AARP does your taxes free. Why spend a dime?

Peace of mind. I feel better spending the $15 for the HR Block basic tax program and doing it myself. I can do it in the comfort of my home. I don't have to lug all of my tax files down to AARP. I don't have to worry about AARP making an error. All my files are saved to disk. E-File is free when using the tax programs.
The various Tax programs lead you through the process so that you do not miss anything.

Does Turbo Tax for Mac work on an iPad?
My guess is no. I just bought the download from Staples for my MacBook Air and it needed to be put in my Applications folder to download. Obviously Ipads don't have an Applications folder. Search on TurboTax in the App Store and see what comes up. BTW TurboTax Deluxe was $59.99 with a $40.00 rebate from Staples yesterday.

My main point was you now have to buy the premiere version of turbotax if you have investment transactions like purchase and sale of stocks and mutual funds...I.e. Anything on schedule D. You used to be able to report these transactions in the basic version. Big price diff between basic and premiere.

I also found this out the hard way. Always bought Deluxe because I have to file Schedule C for a small business that I have. I start to fill it out and am informed that I have to pay an additional $40 to upgrade to Premier. Now I will be up to $99.99. Of course there is no way to contact anyone on the Turbo Tax website!! Never again will I use this software.

Does Turbo Tax for Mac work on an iPad?
No. A Mac and iPad are different operational systems. But there is a version of Turbo Tax for the iPad that requires iOS8. H&R Block has an iPad version too. Not sure how good they might be.
