I fell in love with The Villages due to this forum. It is a wonderful place to exchange information and ideas and thoughts and have a spirited debate with your peers.
I have thousands of posts and would have more except some were deleted by moderators because they fell outside of the guidelines for this very well run forum.
I have been here long enough to see people come and go and some have been banned for their conduct as they should be.
Some posters on all forums like to stir the pot and get people upset and angry. It is what they do. Some call them trolls. We have had our share of those kinds of people on this forum, but they are watched and quickly dispatched after the administration is fairly sure that they are truly here only to aggravate.
It is a very difficult job to moderate a forum with so many outspoken and opinionated people with lots on their mind.
I am very happy we have TOTV.
I have changed my post Memason. Thank you for heads up.
Tell me how often all of you check TOTV. It is an obsession with me. I love The Villages and I love TOTV.

I agree somewhat with Walter123. Ignore the cats. However, some cats just come back and back, as other cats or new cats. Have to learn to discern.
I love the forum and have learned a lot from it. And I am addicted. My laptop is on from morning till night, and I'm always signed in to TOTV, so easy to check several times a day.

See, that's the beauty of TOTV; you can say anything you want, within reason, of course. GracieGirl, keep up the great topics and posts.
As a resolution to 2105, I am going to be more positive in my topics and posts and try not to p**s people off, unless they talk negative about Police Officers. Can't wait to get my shoulder therapy done in KC and become a full timer this spring. Have a great year everyone.

Hello Gracie,
I have enjoyed TOTV which helped to answer many questions before I moved here. It (YOU the members) provides a lot of information that is extremely useful. I still come on here to find recommendations for various contractors, etc.
I no longer generally read/post to certain topics such as
"Restaurant Discussions." I have my taste you have yours, simple. I will not come on here and tell you you are wrong and that a restaurant stinks - if you like it an I don't - enjoy. We all like and miss our hometown favorites. (CORRECT - NO ONE beats New York pizza) LOL !!
Certain politically driven topics such as gun control, abortion, protests, etc. although debatable, will not change minds and seem to just create hostility (for the most part). As above, we all have our own thoughts.
Enough rambling, my posts are usually very short but suffice it to say, TOTV has been and will continue to be a great forum (despite the trolls) especially where newbies are concerned.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!!

Gracie I agree. This forum has been invaluable for many of us and a vast source of information. I've spent countless hours reading on here 5 years before we arrived. It was this forum that kept us going throughout our years of working hard. On a bad work day I'd come home and get on TOTV and daydream of when our time would come.
Yes, I'm addicted also and it was my New Years Resolution to not get on the forum anymore. I think that lasted one day.

Yep, I too love the forums and am so very thankful that the posters who create the heart and soul of this forum are so generous with their time and information.
We were convinced to buy after our first visit, largely due to information viewed on the forum.
We were guided in our home selections, design elements, sub contractors, landscaping, locations, golf cart choices and too many other items to mention. Who needs "Angie's List" when we have such great feedback here on the forum?
Too many great, positive posters to mention them all by name. But you know who you are! The negative posts, I try to ignore and try to avoid confrontation on the forums. People reading the forums are often looking for reassurance that this is a great place to live and the negative posts do not help them (or us) in any way.
I would love to see a decorator section...... if you moderators are viewing....That is the only improvement I can think of.
Love TOTV and all the great info we have gleaned from all of you! A big "Thank You" to you all!!

I too am addicted to TOTV, I read it each morning and each evening and I check it during the day. I absolutely love the Villages and have been accused of being a "Villages cheerleader" ..... I came to the Villages in in 1994 when they were building Spanish Spring and lurked on this site from 2009 -2011 until I joined. I bought a house in 2011, sold and bought a bigger house in 2014. I rent my house in the winter and am up north as I write this.
The thing I love the most about TOTV is the people and their wisdom and the information they provide, especially the "girls" Gracie, Red Witch, Bonny, CFrance, KittyGilchrist just to name a few.(Hey, if God made anything better than women,he kept it for himself..) I have never met anyone of you yet I feel like I know you.
I am from Michigan but live and raised a family in Ohio, I am half red and half blue so I am conflicted in my existence! Some of you are redder, some bluer, some more diplomatic but for the most part respectful, that is what I like about this forum and its people.
BTW: Gracie, it is 11 degrees in Ohio as I write this, a couple of inches of snow fell last night...I really miss the Villages...

TOTV is a good forum for The Villages because of its : "many eyes" reporting happenings that otherwise would be missed.
Indeed moderators have a very difficult challenge
By environment, education and practice, the subject matter I most enjoy is honest debate. However these are not topics for some because they take them too personally.
In additional to being too emotional for some our society as a whole has lost its ability for civil discourse politicians inabilities to resolve issues is one clear indicator of this lost art.
On the other hand I have communicated with many members who are quite skilled at debate and so it is sad that provisions are not made to allow these responsible members an opportunity to do so.
Anyone who has been on this forum for a period of time has noticed the change in those usernames of members who participate on a regular basis.
So the obvious question is what reason(s) contribute to active members actively withdrawing from the forum ?
Clearly there is a continuum of new members but its sad to lose touch with some

I very much agree with this very well thought out post.
I have even tried to gather like thinking people from this forum for a social evening so we have a way to talk together without annoying people who completely disagree with us. It is hard to listen and act like it doesn't matter when someone is typing something you completely disagree with..... AND you know from Facebook that some are against things that you believe in. It doesn't mean that person doesn't have good qualities but just not the same philosophies on how things work or should work.
I would very much like to have a political forum. That way, if you can't stand the heat, you can just stay out of the kitchen.

Hi GG: Ïts hard to listen........is a fact but be ever present that we are all entitled to our views. If people exercised that rule disagreement would always be civil. Underlying that rule is freeing oneself of ego.
I spent my entire career educating employee staff after staff that I didn't need to be right but I did need to make the right choices so that their input was indeed valuable and indeed valuable it was right down to the file clerks.

When my Nana was teaching my generation her recipes we always enjoyed the time she spent with us. No matter how many times we tried the recipe it never tasted quite the same. I was talking to one of my aunts one day and mentioned this. She told me not to worry, Nana NEVER gave out a a complete recipe. From then on we video taped her as she made the dish.
She also used a "pinch" of this and two fingers of that. So we assigned someone to take the ingredient in her hands and measure it.
My wife, with her Irish-English heritage, has been a fabulous Italian cook ever since. (I've always been a good cook. LOL)

Off topic, but I SO love these Italian cooking stories. dbussone, you would love some of the earlier Italian cooking posts--the sauce vs gravy debate, the one where people described their Sundays at their grandparents' with all the family, etc. If you haven't read them, I'll try to dig some up for you.

Please do, there are significant geographical differences in Italian cooking.
And, by the way, in my experience, sauce is used by those born in this country. My Nana always called it gravy. I go half and half.

Tom - let's see what we can do about that. We just finished (30 minutes ago) a nice angel hair pasta, and Bolognese gravy with beef and sweet sausage.
I also cooked up a couple of servings of chicken parmesan. A nice red wine topped it off!

Tom - here we go:
Nana's basic meat gravy -
A 20 oz can of crushed tomatoes
12 ozs of tomato paste
12 ozs of water
A green pepper chopped
1 onion (large cooking) chopped
1 large clove of garlic - crushed
1 pound of lean ground beef
1 pound of ground Italian sausage
Brown the burger and the sausage
Remove from pan onto paper towels to drain the fat
In a lg pan put 4 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
Sautéed the onion, garlic & pepper until soft
Add the tomatoes, paste and water
Stir to combine
Then add 2 tsps of sugar, 1 tsp of dried basil, 2 tsps of dried oregano, 1/2 tsp of mint flakes
Salt & pepper to taste
Simmer 1 hour covered
Enjoy!
You can vary/adjust the recipe to meet your taste. This is a Bolognese gravy. Marinara will not be as heavy, but I prefer meat in my gravy.
Let me know what you think.

You certainly can use the crock pot after the meat is browned
Remember you will have to cook the pasta in boiling water. The crock pot won't work for that.

I have found in R.I. regardless of country of birth gravy is used by most who reside in the west bay area of the state and sauce in the east bay where I reside. Providence is the dividing line and it is a coin flip there.
Yes I most certainly agree that Italian food is so different from region to region especially when it comes to meatballs. I can remember when I was a kid I had a good girlfriend who was Sicilian and my family is from the Puglia region. I was invited to her house for meatballs and spaghetti, and was shocked to discover when I took a bite of a meatball there were raisins in it. The meatballs weren't bad, but not a practice I would adopt when I began making my own.

Funny...I put raisins in my bracciole, but never the meatballs. My Mother was Sicilian and I make my meatballs the way she did. The bracciole recipe I just picked up along the way, and I like it. Kinda like the escarole soup. Most call it Italian Wedding soup, we never did...just escarole soup. And we never had any pasta in it...just the escarole, meatballs, a few scrambled eggs, and cheese.

Wow! It sounds like my wife and I have been missing out on true Italian food all of our life.
We have friends in Sun City Grand, AZ that cook Italian when we visit; we've been so busy with careers and such that Italian to us is (true Italian aficionados don't :yuck:) Ragu sautéed onion and garlic poured in with browned hamburger meat or frozen Italian meatballs from the local Price Chopper.

I don't use eggs in my soup, but if you get the soup in most R.I. Italian restaurants it will usually have eggs in it. They are chopped up so fine you hardly notice them. Also, some folks here put sliced hard boiled eggs in lasagna which I do not.

I usually read TOTV every day, but as you can see from my number of posts, I don't post frequently. In the years before I moved here I would read something about TV that I thought was useful and save it in a WORD file for future reference. Well, that file turned out to be over 80 pages long so you can see how much useful information came out of this site. I want to thank you for that. I like to see what everyone has to say but I don't like to get into conflict and so I pick and choose what I will respond to very carefully. I have made friends on this site and I have had the privilege of getting to know some people's character through repeated postings. I don't have any reason to complain about my home or the community. If I'm a Pollyanna, so be it. I'd rather insulate myself with "nice" than "reality" so that's probably why I don't post often. It's safer that way. I am very grateful for all I have gleaned from TOTV and I adore living in TV with it's beauty and wonderful people.

Of course the first question is How much? My answer:
FUHGEDABOUDIT! I don't know !!!! :pepper2:
I don't know how this thread migrated to this topic, but I'm game: My childhood friend's grandmother (Niagara Falls, NY) used to hide the garlic in her apron pocket. She would slip it into the pot when nobody was looking, let it stew in there for a while, and then fish it out and put it back in her pocket.

I'm going to throw in with the off-topic crowd and talk about Italian cooking.
I cook everyday and everything I cook is Italian, including my morning oatmeal. Yesterday, instead of oatmeal, I made a big salad for breakfast and it was Italian too.
Split pea soup for dinner - Italian! I couldn't make anything that's not Italian even if I tried.
I'm Vegan-Italian, thank you very much. :bigbow:

Nice post, happiness and positivity shine forth. :eclipsee_gold_cup:

LOL, I just made a big pot of the R.I. version of Italian Wedding soup which always includes pasta/pastine specifically acini di pepe. Sometimes folks here include chopped hard boiled eggs some not.
yes...the pastine...hahaha...That's it! I just had company in from Philly/NJ so naturally I made some escarole soup, too. I do not use hard boiled but scramble a few eggs and slowly stir it into the boiling pot. I used to make it for lunch for my coworkers a lot, and was shocked when an Italian friend from NY told me if he wanted egg drop soup, he'd go to a Chinese restaurant!! hahaha, till then I thought that was how everybody did it. I guess we all have our family traditions and quirks on how we make stuff. All good, tho, I'm sure!

Tell me how often all of you check TOTV.
I find it interesting that currently there are 194 members on TOTV and 703 guests. Are the guests comprised of members that haven't logged on?
