View Full Version : Limit on pets in TV.

We are owned by three delightful feline companions. They are rescued guys, and have never been outdoors and won't be ever.
I hear that the rule is Two PETS.
Will I get away with bringing our buddies? Does anyone else push this rule a bit? :dontknow:

Most cat owners do seem to push this rule a LOT. The rule was put in place to prevent people from becoming breeders here. It really applies more to dogs but can be enforced for cats, too.
I had 3 cats. Everyone who knew me knew it. It was never an problem. Now, I'm down to 2 since Jess moved out and took her fat black brat with her. (Don't tell anyone, but I miss that bratty cat.)

Believe this rule has loopholes depending on how mant pets you have when you move here. It seems to apply to people who try to acquire over two pets after they have moved, but believe you are OK with over the 2 number if you are moving to TV.
I know people with two dogs and two cats but they moved here to TV with them.
Look carefully over your deed restrictions though would be my advice.

Before we bought in TV, I asked The Villages agent about limitations on number of pets. I was told the "rule" is two domestic animals per household. However indoor cats are invisible, so only a real busybody would care! And IMHO, unless dogs create a problem, I doubt people would care very much about how many dogs are in a household. I think the by-law would only be enforced if a neighbour complained.

We too have 3 cat babies. When I asked the same question many months ago, many of these guys replied
"What cats?"
In all fairness, if the cats don't roam as ours don't, I doubt anyone has reason to complain.
If this is an issue, I can tell you now, I WON'T be moving to TV!!!
nanci2539

It's not an issue. I know many folks living here with five plus cats; a combo of dogs and cats to equal over four. Dogs, cats, birds etc.
The only time it's a problem is if you have a nosey neighbor who has nothing else better to do but find something to complain about.
I'm renting a villa now and my neighbors around me have dogs and cats. One has 3 dogs and two cats. And it's been that way for ten plus years living here and nobody cares. There are no Village pet police, just nosey neighbors.

I don't understand why people move to an area with restrictions and then try to get around those restrictions.
I love dogs and plan on bringing my two girls when we are able to be in TV for longer than a month at a time.
One of the reasons we bought in TV was because of the Deed Restrictions we believe they will help to keep TV a beautiful place to live.

I agree with you Halle. Rules are rules. I just finished reading the forum on being carded at the swimming pools ensuring those regulations are followed. So those breaking the rules re pet ownership shouldn't have any problems with visitors at the swimming pools that don't belong there, wouldn't you say? I guess it's a selective process.
marlenemiddlesis
08-28-2008, 01:35 PM
Oh and I forgot to add. Somewhere on these forums there were several postings about people abusing the pet privilege. When someone filed a complaint, TV did step in and an ultimatum was given. It was bluntly put ,get rid of the excess pets or move. Gosh the attraction to TV is the restrictions so we don't end up having unfavorable neighborhoods. Personally I would be embarrassed to have TV knocking on my door over such a violation. :o

Well said, Halle and marlenemiddles. Why is it that people who might complain about roaming cats and barking dogs are considered nosey neighbors? Seems to me that they might be the ones who obey the restrictions and expect others to do the same.

I'm an animal lover, dogs and cats. I would never ever file a complaint against a neighbor if they had more than two pets. That's outright cruel. Folks have more than two pets for many reasons and as long as their good neighbors, what difference does it make and please don't say rules are rules. People who make statements like that are usually the people who break rules!
samhass
08-28-2008, 04:43 PM
I would file a complaint if the animals were using my yard for a toilet and the neighbor failed to remedy the situation or the neighbor was letting poo stay in their yards. If your animals are not infringing on my rights or property, I don't care how many you own. IMHO, it comes down to courtesy and being a responsible pet owner.
nanci2539
08-28-2008, 04:46 PM
That's a differnet complaint Sam; some people are rude in their own right without pets. I agree with you that if a pet owner is not responsible; then of course, complaints are in order but if I happen to see my next door neighbor with more than two pets; I wouldn't make a compalint based on that. But unfortunately, many folks do and IMHO; that's just plain mean!

I'm sure I will be stomped on but here goes... I would like to see compliance with the pet restrictions in place with the exception of people moving into The Villages owning more than the allowable number of pets. They should be required to observe the limit after the loss of the additional pets. I love animals too but I don't want to live next to a neighbor with 4 cats and 3 dogs or a neighbor with 2 cats and 4 dogs. Birds on a non-issue for me.
Nanci, IMHO it's not "just plain mean". The rules are there, why would a resident load up on animals when they know the animals or they themselves will be forced to go? That's not fair to the animals, they have no control over the situation.
We have a real honey of a neighbor who will twice daily walk her dog away from her lot and come to the side of our lot, (we're on a corner), and let the dog do it's business. If she sees us in our home, she'll will go to the other side of the street. We were only there for a brief period but will have a discussion with the perp when we return.
We live in a burb outside of a larger city, in our other life, and there are pet limits also which are enforced, I don't see a distinction because we live in The Villages. Enjoy your pets and give them the love they deserve, just own within limits.

We were told when we moved here that it's 2 pets, unless you have 3 when you move in.
Then when one goes to the Rainbow Bridge, you're not allowed to replace it.
I'm sure that's more for dogs.
Who would ever know how many cats you have.

Minty, I think it was mentioned earlier, the cat restriction was to prevent the business of breeding and selling cats. I think most of the cats in The Villages are in house and unknown and people aren't turning those animals in to the local :cop:.

Peachie, I would approach this in two ways; first (and I've done it), would be to scoop the poop into a bag and toss it on her front lawn; second, (done this too), take a picture if you can of the offense and then knock on her door with a plastic bag and the picture stapled to the bag saying "obviously, you ran out of bags, thought I would help you out for the next time". Now if all this fails, report the slug; she's a bad neighbor!

Exactly, Peachie, invisible cats. I believe that all Village kitties should be kept inside, then they shouldn't bother anyone. Except perhaps for Willy's dog. ;D

Nanci - Doesn't Naperville have a cat leash law?
nanci2539
08-28-2008, 09:32 PM
I lived in Stonebridge Country club and there was a two pet limit. My cats never go out but we did have a neighbor who walked her cat on a lease. It was the cutest.
There is a stronger lease law for dogs but that didn't stop rude people from letting their dogs poop on my front lawn. I took care of that first time it happened. I told one lady that my front lawn was not her private doggy park. The neighbors were buzzing that night!

I have read all of your responses to Mikey, Hershey and Harry. They liked some of them better than others. We talked about it at great length and decided that if they ever learn to walk on a leash that we will take two at a time. (They all look alike) And if someone is perceptive enough to see that they are not always the same two cats and turns us in, we will claim that one of them is in the witness protection program. And if that doesn't work, we are going to buddy up to Sadie Mae and ask her to protect us. Other than that of course they will stay inside where they have always been since they were adopted. They said that they can probably get away with all three being on the lanai at one time for birdwatching and gecko watching and if someone turns one of them in for that, well, we will just call on our Cousin Vinnie.
;D
P.S. And if that doesn't work we will learn to poop in SOME peoples yards in the middle of the night.

Nanci, I could pick up the poop and hand deliver or take pictures or call the powers that be but all I WANNA DO IS HAVE SOME FUN IN THE VILLAGES! 040 I don't want to run around turning in the neighbors in my free time, I want them to step up to the plate, (or the poop in this case), and do the right thing.
Graciegirl, I do believe your grandfathered with your three kitties so enjoy their lives and take them all out on leases at once. No one wants to be left behind... ;)

I hear you Peach but look at this way; why should you have to deal with ignorance especially when it's at your front door.
I only had to approach my problem once. There wasn't any yelling, name calling or threats. I simply delivered the poop to her front lawn with a note attached. Another time I took a picture (different neighbor) and left an empty bag with the picture attached at her front door with a note stating that she must have forgotten her bag.
Or you can just call the powers here and report it but I wonder if the direct approach showing her the offense would have more of an effect!

I haven't seen any roaming cats in the neighborhood. Thank God! Because back in Illinois I fed many strays and some of my neighbors weren't pleased. Vetman and I also captured some and tried to find them new homes through his clinic. I never could understand why people let their cats out. In my mind it equates to letting a toddler out to roam the street. Ridiculous!
As far as dog poop, we haven't had any problem. I would say something to the person directly, if I saw it happening, but I guess that's no surprise! :o I would only rat on people to the authorities as a last resort.

I'm sure that will help, Nanci, but I'm not bagging someone else's dog s***. She can come back and get it after I show her the pictures. Sigh.... I think her behavior is the reason many people don't like animals and it's not the animal's fault. :realmad:

The frowning "don't know" symbol came up automatically with the question mark. I remember the Brownie with fondness.
As for pets, I adore animals but have strong allergies. I have to take meds before I can go into a home that has indoor pets. I have 5 cats and about 50 koi in Pa. The cats live in the heated garage. It would be unfair for me to bring them down here to be cooped up when they have always been free to roam. People dumped cats off back in our woods. They bred and became feral. We captured the babies at about 6 weeks, bottle fed them and kept them in an enclosed area until they could be neutered. We trapped every cat and had them all neutered. The caretaker tells me two new ones have shown up. They will be trapped, neutered and released. Hey Handi..don't wander onto our Pa property. See what happens! ;) They are also fat now!

1rnfl 1rnfl As a matter of fact, yes, it is my cathouse!! Those cats have the life...cushy beds, total freedom, free medical and all the wet and dry food they can eat. I personally think they should get jobs. I must say they are great because I have never had a mouse in my house. They patrol the perimeter and mice are not allowed near the place. There was also a large snake population near the house before the cats took up residence. No more.

We had cats also when we lived on the 20 acres in the country and their mousing abilities were terrifc. We did have one cat, however, that apparently felt he should prove to us he was worth his keep and would put his little dead gifts on the front stoop. Yeah, icky. He was really a very prolific mouser, lucky us. ::)

GG, - I'm quite sure that if you were to teach your three cats to enjoy walking on leashes, everyone in TV would find it quite charming.
I've found The Villages is full of animal lovers. None of us like pet owners that are rude and inconsiderate and encourage their animals to poop on other's property. That is just rude and wrong. I've found most pet lovers are wonderful, caring people.

This is a way serious issue for us. We want to move down in a couple of years, but, err...we haven't had less than 3 pets in years. Right now, as of last headcount, was 4 dogs and 1 cathuman. I actually had another opportunity to acquire another Greyhound recently, but declined when I thought how it would make our desired future move even harder. Was it a Villages Sales Agent that told you "what happens behind your door stays behind your door." I think this is true about cats, but dogs do need to be taken for walks.
I'm very curious about whether multiple pets are "grandfathered".

I suspect that the sales folks can look the other way because they have no "authority!" And, probably, your new neighbors will look the other way, too. BUT, and it's a potentially big BUT, if your critters create some on-going disturbances, there may very well be a neighbor who will blow the whistle. Then, you might have heartbreaking trouble!
Just my thoughts!

I am quite sure the deed restrictions will say two domestic pets per household. I was told by a Villages Sales Rep that the restriction was designed to prevent pet breeding. I was also told they "look the other way" as far as the number of pets is concerned.
If existing pets are "grandfathered", (i.e., if you already own them when you move to TV), I would think that you would have to identify that unique situation to The Villages and obtain their permission.
Or you could just do what most people do, and just move in with multiple pets. As Nanci just pointed out, many people have more than two pets. I don't think The Villages would get involved unless the pets were interfering with other residents' quiet enjoyment of their residence.

You will find that the most objections are related to people who allow their dogs to pee and poop and not clean it up.
Stop by some of the postal stations on a damp day and you can smell the urine. Or drive down the street and observe someone throw a plastic bag of dog poop down a storm drain.
Pets are great.........just some of the owners are stupid.
If someone complains about too many animals, it is their right. They read the covenants and deed restrictions and that is why they are villagers.
FOLLOW THE RULES!
Barefoot
09-23-2008, 03:25 PM
I totally agree that people should comply with deed restrictions.
But the problems with pets aren't due to those people with multiple pets!! They are due to the pet owners who are irresponsible and dirty and rude and give the rest of the pet owners a bad name. That type of person probably also throws their used coffee cups out the car window.
I think if Villagers are clean and considerate and respectful of other people, there should be no problems with pets or any other aspect of Village life.

Is there a size limit? My sister is looking at TV. She has a lab mix that goes 90 lbs. but it's a lap dog, a big baby! Friendly dog, only 5 years old, and my sister would never get rid of her!
She's retiring next spring and plans to move summer/fall. Any advice/suggestions greatly appreciated.
Barefoot
09-24-2008, 11:52 AM
Tell your sister not to worry. The biggest reason we chose to move to TV is that they do not have a limit on dog size. We have a 75 lb dog, and most retirement communities won't accept a dog over 40 lbs.
There is a nearby privately-owned dog park "Doggie Doo Run Run" and it is divided into two sections, one for small dogs under 30 lbs and one for large dogs. There are lots and lots of Village large dogs that go there to play. You also often see large dogs at the Town Squares. Although some people object to this, they are allowed to go there on a leash.
It goes without saying that dog owners must be responsible and pick up after their pets. And they must always be leashed (except at the fenced dog park).
dennis11003
09-24-2008, 04:32 PM
Thanks. I'll be sure to tell her. She's been frustrated by communities that won't accept her one large dog (90 lbs.) but will accept two dogs at 40 lbs. each. It doesn't make sense to me!
What's even worse is communities that have said that they will accept her dog conditionally but reserve the right to review in 30 days. Pack-up and move into a new area and community with your loved pet and then be told a month later that you have to get rid of it or move! Assinine to say the least and at least three places have told her that!

Dennis, we ran into exactly the same problems as your sister. We have two dogs, and one is large. Almost all retirement communities we contacted will allow only one dog, and that dog has to usually be under 25 lbs, occasionally under 40 lbs. In the rare case of allowing two dogs, they both have to be small.
The Villages is the only community we found that will allow two dogs without weight limits. Yazoo! Since our dogs are an essential part of our family, we decided to take a Lifestyle Preview in TV. (And our dogs were welcome on the Preview!)
And then we drank the water and fell in love, and decided to buy. We wanted a fenced yard for our dogs, so our only choice was a Courtyard Villa. You can tell we are a dog-dominated family. We haven't regretted it for a second.
So I have our dogs to thank for the fact that we bought in TV. And what a great choice they made! We are extremely happy with our decisions.
I'd use a dog icon here, but they only provide a horse one! :0000000000luvmyhors

It's good to find others who bought a CYV as a dog-house where people can live, too (LOL). My two terriers needed the fencing as well, and the CYV fit the bill. Now they can "chat" with the dachshund that lives on the right, the other terrier to the left, and the hound across the wall.
I also put in a dog door within the sliding glass side-door panel. That provides a lot of peace, and lets the dogs make sure no-one has stolen the air conditioner!
