""THERE'S GOOD REASON WHY MUCH OF THE COUNTRY SUFFERS FROM VERMONT ENVY........THE GREEN MOUNTAIN STATE ISN'T JUST ANOTHER PRETTY PLACE. IT'S GOT BRAINS TO MATCH.""

We got a kick out of the below article; thought I should share it (since a few think Vermont is just a state filled with heroin users........NOT).

Below data is all based on "tweets"........so enjoy it, for the FUN of it. You can check out all of the states via the maps as per the hyperlinks.

""Now Tweet This: Vermont's the Smartest State! ""
Posted By Rick Kisonak on Thu, Jan 22, 2015 at 2:58 PM

""There’s good reason why much of the country suffers from Vermont Envy. Lots of reasons, actually. The Green Mountain State isn't just another pretty place. It’s got brains to match.""

""Do I make this claim because Vermont has the country’s highest number of universities per capita (1 for every 36,000 residents)? I do not. Or because the state ranks first in the nation for writers per capita? Nope. Not even because, as Vermont State Librarian Martha Reid reports, "We have more public libraries per capita than any other state (183). "In FY13," she adds, "Vermont libraries reported 3.6 million visits!" ""

""But we’re getting warmer. I can say with certainty that we’re not just smarter than the average bear. We’re smarter than all the bears. At least all the bears on Twitter!""

""Seriously. Ours and those written by residents of every other state — more than a half million of the 140-or-less-character communiqués, in fact. And then the company analyzed them to determine the average grade reading level and IQ state by state, using a computer algorithm to score tweets based on factors such as spelling, grammar and word choice. Points presumably were deducted for Twitter pics of users wearing only towels. (Geraldo Rivera may single-handedly have prevented New Jersey from cracking the top five.)""

""Speaking of which, I give you the five smartest states:""

1. Vermont
2. Wyoming
3. Massachusetts
4. Minnesota
5. Maine

And the five where attaching pics of yourself in just a towel is apparently really common:

5. Mississippi
4. Arkansas
3. Alabama
2. South Carolina
1. Louisiana

""Those five bringing up the bottom weren’t the only ones who got bad news. The country as a whole came in at just below a fifth-grade reading level. A fact that would be sorry enough if the statistic were arrived at solely through Twitter-based science. But the sad reality is that the Movoto findings closely mirror recent official state education performance statistics. That would be enough to strike the average American dumb if, you know, the average American already wasn’t.""

""That’s right. According to a study just published by the California-based online real estate giant Movoto, Vermont isn’t merely among the smartest states, it is the smartest state. And how did it arrive at that conclusion? It read our tweets (http://www.movoto.com/blog/novelty-real-estate/reading-level-tweet-smart-well-written-state/). THEN SCROLL DOWN TO MAP.""

What's with all this Vermont stuff? Maybe 1% of residents care.
Besides, what are these statistics based upon? Percentages or population compared to others?
It isn't anything very news worthy to Villagers, I'm afraid.

Based upon a tweet, it's worthy of a bird.

Simply put, on Facebook lately........all of the various states have been represented as far as their "ranking" for one thing or another.........

The U.S. map is shown........then the state is highlighted.....
Such as safest, etc.

But the "tweets" thing was put out by realtors.

With another snowstorm imminent, be very glad that you are all enjoying the glorious Florida sunshine, savoring life around the swimming pools........while we dig out yet again.

Florida has ALWAYS BEEN OUR FAVORITE VACATION STATE for the past 50 years.

I think it was done "tongue in cheek" to be humorous.
Based on tweets......nuts, right?

However, Connecticut had a very high I.Q. , right????? My mistake, it was MASSACHUSETTS.

OK, that was pretty funny! Complete BULL, but funny nonetheless. Somebody has absolutely nothing to do if they sit around scoring the reading level of tweets, as if those are a reflection of American intellect. Still, it's pretty funny!

 Hey don't knock Vermont. I've raised my kids and spent half my life there. For all the talk about the good ole days when it was safe to let your kids go out to play and you didn't have to lock your doors or worry about a person keeping their word etc. etc. we found to be alive and well there.

I don't miss the snow because I'm not a skier, nor a youngster, but the people, beauty and safety of Vermont will always be in my heart.

I love Canadians as well. I actually have family up there. Cousins; lots of cousins. Going back to the "dit names".......French Canadians.

Plus all of our Italians who migrated UP to very COLD CANADA.
They are our friendly neighbor to the north of Vermont, on our border.

Ours live in Ottawa, Quebec, plus smaller towns near those cities........
As well as Nova Scotia.......our favorite MARITIMES of CANADA.

Plus lots of Ukrainians who migrated from Ukraine to the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, etc. plus also some of the bigger cities.
Lots of the old wooden churches still exist..........plus the traditions of my mother's mother's roots.

We always were able to cross the border without a passport. ha !

We feel blessed to have Canada on our northern border rather than Mexico or Cuba. Lets just say it could be worse, in the event of terrorism striking our homeland. On all of our travels to CANADA over the years, we have met nothing but KIND FRIENDLY FOLKS.........especially LOVE those we always met on Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia. Real genuine people. Like Vermonters.

So true. We were lucky as well to raise our family here.
They had the safe wholesome childhood that is elusive now in so many other locations.

We were just saying the other day that our kids were able to walk on the pine trail to school........never once did we worry they would be molested. All of the children played outside in groups with their friends, just as we did in New Jersey in the 1950's.
Carefree childhood. They walked down the hill to the library in town. They walked to the movie theatre. How many kids can still do that. They could enjoy a rural life with horses, etc. or a "townie" life (believe it or not we have some culture up here).......

We left our doors open as well.........neighbors helped neighbors; generations knew each other.........the continuity of life was a given.

Our son lives in Colorado ever since he graduated Univ. of Vermont at age 22, then went west (as did so many Vermont boys) got his M.B.A. out there; made a great life for himself; is a business owner........lovely family.

HOWEVER, when he returns to Vermont & we all drive through the gorgeous green mountains........he always says how much he loves his home state.........but Colorado is now his home.

I think I played way too much JOHN DENVER back in the day..........but they also say that they will never be able to let their little girls just walk to school alone or play out alone as they were able to play freely in Vermont & Oregon.

Changing society.

Our daughter is raising her kids in northern Vermont up by Ben & Jerry's, Cabot Cheese, very rural forested area, on their ten acres of land; beautiful country again........have chickens for eggs, live a healthy lifestyle. She also has her Masters in teaching; her hubby is an almost Ph.d but without dissertation.

To each his own. But Vermont is NOT filled with druggies. Certainly NOT as many as Florida.

The drug dealers came UP to Vermont from the metro city areas & hooked some weak youngsters on heroin & cocaine. Our police & drug task force have been working hard as they want their own little ones to live the lives they experienced.............just as you mention above.....spoken from your heart.......only those who have been blessed to live in a simple pure state can speak the truth.........the newspapers totally blew it all out of proportion, simply because the DRUG BUSTS came out of pristine lilly white Vermont. Like it couldn't happen here. Our one super highway on the right side of the state was a conduit for those from the SOUTH, & from New York City, Philadelphia, etc.......Vermont was always said to have more cows than people........the little towns & villages are few & far between.

I think it's more the time than the place, as far as locking doors and allowing kids to run free. We never had to worry in PA, OH, NJ, MI, up until the last few years. And we lived in both cities and the country.

Our kids had a beautiful childhood running around Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. Barefoot. Before that it was Shongum Lake in North Jersey and before that beautiful downtown Pittsburgh. No worries.

Tweeting and farce book are ways to gather personnel information for the users. In other words spying by companies, gov. Crooks, and hackers. The more information you give them the more money Facebook and others make by selling and gathering your personal information.

Ever notice when you go on line shopping suddenly adds pop up for weeks?
Where do you think they get this information? Goggle, Facebook ect... They don't make millions for providing free site for the users.

Fully agree CFrance - it is more the time than the place. I grew up in Cleveland Ohio and we didn't lock doors and left the keys in the car! Today I wouldn't even drive my car through there.

You are correct about Facebook, etc., etc.

We will continue to vacation in Florida (in the springtime mostly) as the excessive heat & humidity is bothersome.........plus my husband has Lupus (whereby the sun causes plaques to break out on his face). Our adult children continue the tradition of bringing their own little ones to Disney World each year........we have cousins living in Brooksville, Florida.......& elsewhere in Fla.

We may "rent" in TV or vicinity. No law against people renting out their homes for several months, right? Or us paying them the rent?

The entire U.S. is a beautiful place to explore.......we just happen to prefer the cooler regions. It's not a crime.

Directions:

Place the prunes in a dish, pour the water over them, add lemon juice.

Place in fridge overnight.

Enjoy.

You are very welcome........you've always had a nice sense of humor, PLUS don't obsess over every little cultural difference.

Those of us from the cities (as kids) have more tolerance it seems.

Not sure I can promise that it will ever stop snowing..........
MORE TODAY. Schools are all closed again.
I don't tweet either........that thread was all in FUN.
Each state has it's "brains" as well as NOT. That's for sure.

P.S.
When your folks had their restaurants, did any non Italians order the peppers & eggs or the potatoes & eggs???

I'll bet they did (irregardless of what Bonanza might think).....

In high school, all of the other kids would OFFER TO TRADE SANDWICHES with the Italian kids whose moms' packed them our "humble peasant fare"........no matter what it was that day.

Anyone can eat a cold cuts on white bread sandwich or a Peanut Butter/Jelly......but to have an eggplant parm, peppers & eggs, potatoes & eggs, etc. or meatball sub, sausage, peppers & onions......that took some "love" from the momma.

It usually was the kids who had older brothers along with their fathers who needed the bag lunch to bring to work..............the rest of us used the cafeteria.

SO TWEET THAT

I guarantee it will stop snowing by May 1st......or at least May 31.

I.Q. is innate. A good education can cause you to score better on standardized tests but it really does not change your ability.

So having a lot of colleges is a nice thing, but doesn't mean that you have smarter people. AND having a high I.Q. may mean you have certain measurable abilities but it doesn't mean you will be more successful in life. It HELPS sometimes, but sometimes you end up only dressing funny.

Most people love the culture and the landscape of the place where they were born and grew up. A nice Ohio farmer would challenge whether a person born in a huge city had more tolerance for others. THAT is a value. I often wonder whether people from large cities ever understand what it is like to live in a rural place for their formative years. Senior, you have lived in a large city and in a less populated area.

Diversity is an interesting thing. I ended up on a street in a nice suburb in Cincinnati that had people from very diverse areas of the world. Many people who came in to work for General Electric and Proctor and Gamble chose our area because of the good school system and nice homes.

I found that people were pretty much the same. Most were hard workers and all loved their children. There were different ways that people were taught to maintain their homes. Our next door neighbors from India had always had servants and they were always asking us for advice on buying things like lawn mowers and what to do about home maintenance. They were kind and peace loving and bright and funny and we LOVED them.

So in the middle of a suburb in Ohio we had people born in Asia, Europe, and Africa. But they all put up Christmas lights when I asked them too.

I never thought it might be intrusive or rude. But I guess it was. I was on the committee for Lumenaria and they graciously bought their bags and candles and lit them on the 24th.

I think that where you live and what you love about it is always personal and reflects if you usually love people.
