I am 46yrs old - My parents have a home in the Villages and I fell in Love with the Villages! I am seriously thinking about making the move - I realize that vacationing and actually living someplace can be very different - but I was curious to know if there is anyone on this forum that made the move under similar circumstances that can offer and advice. I want to add that I will be making the move with my 19yr old.

Yes. Do not listen to people who are inside and don't want newcomers (they're a minority who long for "the good old days", when TV was only east of Hwy. 441/27).

Up to 20% of the population can be under 55, as allowed by the federal law for 55-and-over community status.

That is not a problem, He is old enough, but he will probably go away to school at that age. Most kids do.

Yes, he is planning on going to school. At first I am interested in renting - my main question is should I rent in the villages or outside of the villages?

I'd say the biggest issue is if you're going to have to work and, if so, your skills, etc. Pay rates here dismal to say the least. Jobs with benefits are few and far between. However, if you're in the medical field or can telecommute, you should have few problems.

There is one other minus if you have to work -- many of the activities are during working hours. TV really does shut down early. Frustrating for night owls. That doesn't mean you can't still do things, just that there isn't quite as much to do and many neighborhood get togethers are in the afternoon and early evening.

As to your son, so long as he's over 19, the world is good. I moved here with my daughter when she was 19 and I was 51. It was difficult for her to find friends at first but she finally did, which made for a more content girl.

You'll both find your niche. It really is a pretty good place to live, even for "youngsters".

Oops, forgot to reply to your main question. Rent outside of TV is definitely cheaper. However, you don't really get TV if you live elsewhere. Personally, I would rent in TV. If price is a consideration, there are some very nice manufactured homes available for long-term rentals.

I am in the medical field - so finding a job shouldn't be an issue - while I know that I will not receive the same salary I am currently receiving the lifestyle and weather will be worth it. Be prepared for a third of your current salary (or less, depending where you're from). As to the weather, the summers here are brutal for many of us. The humidity truly can be unbearable. But, yes, the lifestyle more than makes up for a lot of the negatives.

I am familiar with Florida summers, I lived in the Ft. Lauderdale are approx 20yrs ago for about 5yrs - unfortunately because of personal reasons I had to move back to my home state - but since I left my desire has been to return. I really don't want to return to the Ft. Lauderdale area but the Villages really seems like a place I can call home. God Willing I am hoping to be there by July or Aug (Hottest time of yr :( ) Thank you so much again for all the information you provided. If the people in the villages are as welcoming and friendly as you are I know I will be happy :)

I have just met several people in the 55 range and they love it here!!!!

If work is not a problem, then you are golden.

Don't forget, no matter where you live, in ten years you will be 65. :smiley:

I like to think I am getting younger, the longer I stay here!!!!

You will love the lifestyle and you may have trouble keeping up with older people. :D
