View Full Version : Insulting signs at fish hawk

There are 2 demeaning, sexually suggestive signs in the billiards room at Fish Hawk that should be removed. Requests to the Rec Dept. to this end have been made, accompanied by petition sheets with Villagers' signatures, but to no avail. The signs are "girlie posters" akin to those of a less politically correct era and use fishing terms to suggest a woman's "bush" and keeping a man's "rod" up.
Fish Hawk has a family pool and many young people AND women use the billiards room. These signs suggest that such a disrespectful and crass attitude is okay. It is not what anyone expects or should experience in The Villages.
Check out the signs and express your opinion to the Recreation Dept., the front desk, Fish Hawk's Manager or anywhere you think someone might take positive action. The signs are just in bad taste.

I am definitely putting this on my list of things to be pi55ed off about. It slid in nicely at number 135 just behind wearing white shoes after Labor Day, but ahead of my annoyance of the contraction for "will not" being "won't" instead of "willn't".

This PC stuff is a slippery slope. The poster may be offensive, to the OP, but not to others. I would think some review committee approved the art work in the Rec Centers. Who is going to be the morals police?
I have not seen the poster, but will check it out before I start passing judgement.

Would someone go to Fishhawk and take a picture of these plaques? I can't imagine that Tracy Matthews would have approved anything in poor taste.

My guess is she will not like TV. Those offensive posters and the replies received to her post. This just might not be the place for them!

Tiguer, Are they retro pinups ? I get the feeling that Tracy Matthews was going for an old fashioned fish camp feel from the forties. The Billiard room looks like it has two second world war pinup pictures on one wall. Like Killroy was here...of that genre.

Bring on the PC police! I have yet to observe anything anywhere of prurient interest in The Villages.
And yes, I have spent some time in the billiards room at Fish Hawk and noticed nothing unusual or extraordinary about it. The center has an old fashioned masculine fish camp theme. Each center has a theme or "feel". Perhaps the OP might be happier spending her time in more feminine surroundings.

The pictures aren't the issue. It's the language. "We'll take you deep into the Bush" and "We'll teach you to keep your Rod up"...combine with the pinup posters. I can hear the man cave snickering from here.

They are reproduction pin-up signs. It's not the art that is in question--it's what the signs SAY that is objectionable. Read them and decide for yourself.

So if it bothers someone that his child is called negative names at school he should just keep the child out of school? Or if there is a racist sign in a public place we should all stay away from that public place? And if a teenager thinks those signs at Fish Hawk are acceptable thinking--how does that help form his personality and further society's attempts at treating people well and with respect?

i agree with the OP i worked in a factory for 30 years and what we were able to do and say back in the 70's and 80's all changed ......the pictures themselves seem ok but the wording does have a sexual meaning....I wouldnt want my granddaughter who is 10 asking me.....Papa what does that mean....i would expect to see pics like this in a redneck gas station

My kids AND grandkids are used to honest and direct answers from me. We saw our two grandchildren every day of their lives until they left for college.
But I am a grandmother, not a papa. Sweetie wouldn't tell them where babies come from any sooner than he would fly. He may not KNOW.
IF MY ten year old would ask...what does that mean. I would say, When you are fly fishing you have to watch and keep your arm up and your rod up so your hook doesn't catch something or somebody.
And on the other one... I would say that in certain areas of the world bush is the heavy dense thick vegetation areas.
The plaques are funny because they has two meanings.
If they were older I would explain...the other meaning.
I can think of so many worse things I don't want them to see.

Gracie, I agree with you about informing our kids.....but things have changed as to what is politically correct.....I cant imagine anyone one in a business atmosphere with women employees having these pics hanging in their business......I would bet John Rohan wouldn't hang them in his office....for fear of a female employee complaining.....these pics are not what i would expect to see in a rec center in TV

What an amazing amount of "hooey" raised by one person who appears to be very easily offended.
If we remove those posters, then we would have to remove the "(ate)" 8 ball, both the 6 & 9 balls, maybe "balls" in general, cue sticks with "butts" and "shafts," poolroom terminology like "breaking the balls" and "stroking" correctly," not even allowing mention of "screwing the shaft into the butt" of a 2-piece pool cue, and turn it into a Ping-Pong room (oops, that use "paddles" to hit the "balls."
I'm 71 years old and I still get amazed at many peoples' view of the world around them.

You're already too late if they DO get it. I used to work with a couple of ladies, one of which said the she would not allow her kids to watch SNL because of the suggestive jokes. The other one told her, "If they laugh at them, you're already too late because they are way ahead of you. If they have to ask 'what's so funny', then they could care less".
It really bothers me when people come here and then want to start changing everything. What you don't like might be something that I do; and what I don't like might be what you do. That's why they say there is something for everyone.
Apparently, many of the people had not even paid any attention to these posters until the OP posed the idea that there might be a problem. Anything, and I mean anything, can be considered objectionable if one tries hard enough.

Is the OP entitled to their opinion? ...... YES
Do I find them personally objectionable? ..... no
Do I find it personally objectionable that the OP was invited to "leave" by the 9th post of the thread for the heinous crime of expressing their opinion? ....... YES!!
Would I have the signs in question in my home .... no (just not my style)
Is their a MAJOR difference in what is acceptable to display in your own home and a public (and yes the Rec Center is a public) facility? ....... YES!!
Their are sooooooooo many on this board that rush in to defend anything that is in any way connected to TV and "The Developer", it is kinda amazing to me. "The Developer" did an excellent job of conceptualizing and executing a business plan. HOWEVER, "The Developer" and those in charge of the VCCDD, CCD are NOT omnipotent! They have, are and will make mistakes and errors in judgement.
Was the placement of these double entree signs a mistake or error in judgement? Considering that this Rec Center has been open for about 10 years or so, you would probably have to say that has not offended enough people to be a problem. However, if would have been my decision to hang them .... I would have said no. Given the location.

Sorry, but I was not, nor do I always defend the developer. Like you said, it's a funny thing that this is just now become objectionable. Is the OP entitled to an opinion....absolutely. Should they be invited to leave because of expressing an opinion....absolutely not!
I do have a problem with the ones who come here and immediately want to start changing things to their liking. Why can't we have fences, why can't the youngsters play pool, why can only people over 30 go to the neighborhood pools, why can't grandparents raise their grandchildren here in TV, why can't our friends from the outside come to the rec centers to play cards or other activities, why can't we have lawn ornaments, why can't we have all modern music; why do we have to listen to 40's - 50's - 60's, why do the "old" people have to drive and be in the way? And, the list goes on, and on, and on. This place is unique and there is no way to please everyone. Enjoy what you enjoy and let the others do the same....that's it. I don't enjoy Cody's or redsauce, but some do. Great! I have my favorite courses, rec centers, restaurants, activities; the others I leave to those who enjoy them. If not for all the rules, this place would become just like many other undesirable places. Even the retirement places around us that don't have as much to offer as here, have rules by which they must abide.
Something for EVERYONE. If not here, then maybe somewhere else; just don't try to change what many others like, have been accustomed to, and enjoy.
If anyone here is bored, it is not the fault of someone else.

So you choose to suggest people who play pool are not as good as you?!!? How rude! That is not very classy. Would you have found these objectionable in the era of the 40's or 50's?
I never said that.......I just think those sort of photos would not be hung in the entrance hall of any rec center....
But they are what some people like to look at in a pool room.....or so says the decorating staff.
although I did not live in the 40's I do think the pictures were available,
but the verbage I do believe was not the same, in regards to bush and rod.....I think legs were called gams and that was looked upon as derogatory
but then again I grew up in connecticut in a all girls catholic school right thru highschool. So again...what do I know

a number of posters defense of these signs is that "we are adults for godsake". so its no big deal. But if that's true why would someone be so juvenile as to hang signs like this especially in a rec center they know attracts many people for many reasons .
For me its not about being politically correct or even being offended. For me its a small reminder, a trigger, of the state of mind in this sex obsessed society. It seems you can't go anywhere or watch anything or listen to any music that doesn't exploit this issue and often very pervertedly. Lucky for me remotes have fast forward so I can at least minimize these mindless displays
So it would be nice to be able to escape it some of the time. and yes I will avoid the billard room at Fish Hawk

I question if you actually live in the Villages. Many your comments and opinions like in this thread berate the developer, district operations, and Villagers themselves. You have made numerous statements detrimental to the quality of our lifestyle, quality of our homes, and how we are governed. And even how some people shop.
I then have seen you post that you live in Miami, and live in the Plantation neighborhood. And now you pipe in on recreation center posters which have absolutely zero to do with you. I just wonder why people pretend once they get past 5 years old.
Can this be true?
I guess it is...................
I dont know about the other commentor, but for me

That's because some people have no respect for anyone's opinion that differs from their own. That is the same for the world outside TV, as well.

People want to have things their own way. Some pick up their marbles and move back home.
Two tasteless decorating items amongst thousands is a pretty good track record. Most developers would put in paneling and those vinyl banquet tables and chairs from Sams, and leave it at that.
We get endless style and ambience with these themed rec centers. Think Eisenhower Rec Center. I cry when I read the letters from P.O.W.'s there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Re3G1Cbv3M

Wow! You know this is IS 2015 and not back in the '40's or '50's, states are legalizing pot and gay marriage is legal now in most states?

Bottom line, if they are not innuendo savvy, it's easy to explain the what it really means, when you are fly fishing, you need to keep the rod tip up so it easier to keep the fish on, easy to explain to grand kids. If the grand kids perceive it as suggestive, then that is probably the most tame thing they have seen and they know and understand much more. I just have a hard time thinking six year, 10 year old grand kids would really get the joke, if they did, then that is a little scary. I can remember seeing Shrek, which is a cartoon FOR KIDS G rated when they see the castle which is tall and slender, Shrek looks at Donkey and says, " So you think maybe he's compensating for something". Something like that is easy to explain. A sense of humor is a terrible thing to waste. My philosophy is don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things. Adult community, give them the adult answer without the innuendo.

I agree!

I'll risk a chance on a kid seeing those fishing pictures, especially when compared to the Bratz dolls five and six year old girls play with today. I'm attaching a picture of one. Frankly, I think these should be taken off the market, along with thong panties for pre-teen girls. Yes, those are available at all department stores. But those are MY boundaries. We all have different ones.
Our kids are already so overloaded on a daily basis with the likes of Miley, the Kardashians, and any "Housewives" franchise that I think a couple of retro girlie posters should be the least of a parent's worries.
However, for those of you that still think it is inappropriate, let me ask you this. How far are you willing to go? We can politically correct ourselves right into a society that accepts nothing less than the most conservative of ideology where no one talks about sex, no one drinks alcohol, women are seen fully clothed at all times when in public . . . oh, wait, some countries are already doing that.
Some of us dislike girlie posters and some of us dislike Bratz dolls and some of us dislike seeing older women in skimpy get-ups having a little too much to drink down there at the square. The good news is that we live in a country where we get to freely vocalize our likes and dislikes. Not everyone will agree with us and the change we seek may or may not happen.

The big problem lies in where does it stop. Now it's a petition for pictures on a rec center wall. Then it will go to the movies at the squares, then the books in the library, etc..... The world is a big place filled with all kinds of life. Some is awesome, some is not. But it's a good thing that someone isn't censoring everything and controlling all that we are allowed to see & do.

FunTrivia a very heavily used trivia web-site is very family friendly and will boot people who use foul language and post r and/or x rated kind of language. That's in the public section of it though. I have had some particularly foul attacks on me when I am in a private group challenging one another to get the most questions right and fastest in a Tournament. And if someone really starts complaining then the culprit in the private Tournament gets banned for whatever time the moderator deems appropriate. http://www.funtrivia.com/?ref=Taltarzac
My point is context in important.
If you hell "God is great" during a showing of American Sniper you might have a half dozen guys and gals tackling you. And, this might be in the Villages even if most of these six would be over 65.
The pool room posters just show me that there is life here in some in the Villages. And life with all its foibles.

I love the whole pin up genre of art. It is a real kind of art from the era of the forties. It includes the artist Varga and also encompasses all of the the nose cone art from the second world war pilots airplanes. It was not demeaning to women unless you have that mind set. We were all young and better looking than we are now, and most of us have pictures of us snapped in our bathing suits.
I am offended by people offended by the fact that was included in the art hung on the wall of that rec center because it absolutely fit in with a fish camp pool room of that era's décor. I don't have stuff like that in my house because that is not the kind of décor I have, but it is part and parcel of the art of that era. Including the double entendres.
GOOD GRIEF. Do we have any body who is old enough to post on a senior forum. I was a small child in the forties and I saw this kind of pin up art as a child and I am still kicking. Nose cone art below. Disclaimer, don't open if you will be offended by what our pilots put on their airplanes back then.

Let me explain it to you.. I am a man and have heard these words and many more, used in a show of disrespect for women. When one adds the words bush and rod to the photos, posed by women, here is no doubt of the meaning conveyed. Many responses seem to have no problem with these two pictures, If the photos were of scantily clothed men with similar suggestive words, would they feel the same. And to portray this as art or erotica is hogwash.

Anyone with a decent amount of knowledge about the internet SHOULD prefer to remain anonymous. Here are a few excerpts from articles about internet anonymity:
"Anonymity is important to anyone who doesn't want every facet of their online life tied to a Google search of their name. It is important to anyone who is repulsed by the idea of an unrelenting data broker logging everything she has ever said, or shown interest in, in a permanent marketing profile."
"To suggest anonymity should be forbidden because of troll-noise is just as bad as suggesting a ban on protesting because the only demonstrators you have ever encountered are from the Westboro Baptist Church—the trolls of the picket world. People who say otherwise need to widen their experience and understanding of the online world. The online spaces we know and love would be doomed without anonymity, even if the security of that anonymity is far from absolute or impenetrable."
And let's not forget the ever present message board bullies. EVERY board has them, including this one. Personally, I don't care for them to have access to private details of my life.

I am not either. They are from another age and time. I am a redblooded American woman who is in a monogamous marriage to a red blooded man for 53 years,
He may be offended, (I doubt it) but I am not.
I have always felt equal.
Well said. I think women are more degraded by throwing the victim card around than by some silly sign.

Yes... I remember them marching across the bridge at Selma. If I recall, their high heels kept getting caught in the grating...

Maybe we could get an ACLU member to crawl out from under his/her rock and check in on this. There must be some fodder for federal legislation and a new enforcement agency.

Are these the same women that go now around in 6 " stiletto heels, with dresses so short you can see their underwear, that is if they are wearing any. Breast implants and then wear tops that barely cover those 40 EEE.
I doubt that those retro pictures will affect women's equality today.

Excellent post. Agree with all issues you have pointed out. The Villages is a classy place. I believe the pictures are tastless and speak to a sexist bygone era that is no longer acceptable in a public place. They should be removed.

And replace it with what? A Kim Kardashian picture or Miley Cyrus? Which are two acceptable in today's standards?

YES I DO! And once again :agree: I am not a prude nor a victim but I find those posters at the rec center inappropriate for the rec center. There is a time and place for everything.

Kids are a LOT savvier than we think, and those pictures in that billiards room are not the problem. Any kid who sees those pictures and understand the double entendre' has probably already seen a lot worse.
What is the Average Age That a Teen Starts Sexting? (http://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/175248/What-is-the-Average-Age-That-a-Teen-Starts-Sexting)
I know a lot of you are not going to agree with my post. And that's okay.
wandatime: you approach it from a different angle but that is the point I have been trying to make all along. It seems each successive generation is becoming inordinately pre-occupied with sex. It seems nothing escapes people today that doesn't require comparisons to genitalia. Kids are not getting a chance to grow up and are being pushed into adulthood by some parents, and with plenty of assistance from Hollywood. Even animated features focus on the sexual aspect.
Kid ae getting the wrong message and have been for sometime its no wonder the diorce rates and single mother % aren't even higher.
So the plaques at Fish Hawk were only a trigger of this grime statistic for me and hence their display poor judgment in my view.. I could go on but to what avail
Personal Best Regards

Yes, but they are not around to protest abuse of women, for example, in a Hollywood movie in which a young woman is stalked, handcuffed, tied to the bedposts, hit on the abdomen with a riding crop and flog, etc.
They're also not around to protest the kidnapping and sex slavery of young girls by Boko Haram.

I have to agree.
It's strange that not a single poster prior to the OP ever voiced complaints about these old ads. They weren't put up yesterday.
I despise the whole choking cloud of 'political correctness.' I believe the thin tail is wagging the big dog.
All these posts about political correctness immediately make me think about the Communist rule in Russia. It produces lies and 'codewords' and absolute distrust of one's fellow citizens. I think there's a very short distance between
statements deemed by the noisy ever so sensitive puritans to be "politically incorrect" and therefore "offensive" and prosecution for 'hate crime.' That is thought control, and doesn't belong in free or formerly free democracies.
We never needed a Russian invasion. Our homegrown puritans and speech and thought police have brought "1984" and "Animal Farm" and "Gulag Archipelago" to our rec centers. Thanks ever so much.

Great post Gracie and I would do the same. There is far worse things that come into view or are shown on you tube which all kids with any access to the internet have already found. My self I find the pictures with some humor and in this world we live in we need more of.

Don & Handy: Since you guys are afficonados of "nose art", I thought you might get a kick out of some "creative cammoflage" done by some Marines during the very early days in Afghanistan in 2001-2. These pics were taken at Bagram when it was still just barely a dirt strip in the middle of nowhere! Yes, the paint scheme eventually fell victim to....wait for it....no, not the Taliban....Washington, after some staffers came out to get their shoes dusty and pick up their T-shirts!! LoL!! Enjoy......
