How prevalent is heartworm here for cats?

I absolutely hate using chemicals on my kitties. Up north, I would use Frontline for fleas just once in the summer. My cats loved to spend the day in a screened gazebo and fleas can certainly find their way in through a screen. I used this as a precautionary measure only once and never had a flea problem. Heartworm in cats was never a problem in the midwest.

How many of you use a flea/heartworm formula on your cats? What's the general opinion on this?

I have a friend who has two cats and has lived in TV for 10 years now and has never used anything - her cats are in the lanai daily. She doens't even bring them to the vet for annual shots.

I have a 5-ish year old female tabby. Up until this year I used Revolution monthly which takes care of fleas and heartworm. She developed a sensitivity to it -- and I started reading up on these chemical products. I decided that since she is strictly an indoor cat, we would not treat a problem that does not exist. I am also trying to get her onto a more natural diet - incorporating raw food. There is lots to learn on how to keep your cat healthy. I also use the Mobile Vet -- which alleviates putting her in a carrier and taking her to the vet (which she hated). Less stress on both of us.

I tried the raw diet; my cats didn't like it at all.

Some of the better foods for cats are TIKI; EVO Innova; Calif. Natural. I always purchased cat food in a Natural Pet store up North but I can't seem to find one here. The lower end cat foods that you find in Petco or the grocery store is equalivant to eating McDonalds every day!

If you know of any, please let me know

TV is very lucky to have a new pet supply store in the Albertson's Plaza. Whole Earth Pet Supply, 352-391-5806. The owners and managers are super-knowledgeable and they carry only the top natural brands. Check out their web site: www.wholeearthpetsupply.com

Tnanks, they seem limited on canned food. I've used Fromm and my cats like it. Hopefully, they will add more canned. The eagle brand is good but Tiki is better.

I definitely use heartworm (Revolution) for my dogs. But my Vet said it isn't necessary for indoor cats.

So do my cats who have dined on the same Costco cat food for nearly 15 years.
