Long time ago I was a club thrower. Then one day I asked my son if he wanted to play a few holes at the club with me. His answer changed my golf life. He told me he didn't want to play because I never seemed to be having fun and was always upset at myself.

I've not thrown a club since. Bad shots now elicit a chuckle. Don't misunderstand. I still am driven to play better, but I no longer get mad when I don't play as well as I expect.


It is a game. Enjoy it.

I totally agree. When I was younger and felt like I needed to win at everything, I found I wasn't enjoying myself so much. Now, I find that just playing for the fun of it is a lot more enjoyable. I wasn't making any money at golf anyway.

Many years ago, four of us were playing at a course in Arkansas. #8 was a par 4 that you tee off over a lake, about a 100 yd. carry to reach the fairway. We caught up with a group in front of us on the hole and proceeded to watch one of the guys put 4 balls in the water. What happened next I'll never forget - he walks to the end of the tee box (the tee box butts up to the lake with a wall), take the entire bag and throws it in the lake. He storms off the tee, jumps in the cart and takes off toward the clubhouse. A few minutes later, here comes the cart back with the guy, he pulls up to the lake, jumps into it (about 6' deep), retrieves the bag, pulls his CAR KEYS out of it, throws it back into the lake and leaves. We played on and about two weeks later we played there again; one of the maintenance guys there had retrieved the bag that same day and took it to the clubhouse and the owner never had came back for it.

If you watch the video these guys even throw clubs beautifully. The way he drives with his legs, shifting weight, then holds the angle between the forearm and shaft until the point of release... :a20:

On a related note, I recall reading a instructional book where the teacher had the students swing, but instead if hitting a ball, throw the club down the fairway. He made a video of them hitting a ball and one of throwing the club.

He then showed them their swing when trying to hit a ball (awful) and their swing when throwing the club. When throwing the club the swings were quite good. I forget the name of the book.
