Do yourself a favor, check with a local landscape expert. As I understand it, you do not need to dethatch a Florida lawn, and the dead grass actually helps fertilize your lawn going forward, the "top soil" here is mostly sand and clay.
We have been here one 1.5 years, and have seen no reason to dethatch the lawn.
I may be completely wrong, so please check with an expert.

Yes you do need to de-thatch. We bought a little over a year ago, and while there in May our lawn looked terrible. We were told to de-thatch.
What happens is when your yard is cut it is mulched, it is good to a point, however over time this will build up and block the roots from getting what they need.
Our nieghbors yard looked great, found they use Fertigator and Fertigator De-thatches. We signed on with them and when the de-thatched our yard, they carried away 16 large trash bags of thatch. Our yard looks amazing now.
This is not an advertisement for Fertigator, however our yard has done a complete turn around and we couldn't be happier.
They man from Fertigator told us de-thatching needs done every 3-4 years

I have been told there is a product that is liquid and is sprayed on. It breaks down the thatch at an faster rate and thus you keep from tearing up emerging growth that ocours by traditional de-thatching.
Going to start looking both in store and online. I hope its so!
