OK have been searching this site for things that need done when we leave the house empty for a period of time. One of the things that I see on everyone's list is the saran wrap on the toilets. They say to do this to keep out the snakes and bugs and to keep the trap water from evaporation. But if snakes come in while you are gone what keeps them from coming in thru the toilet while you are there???

Does this really happen in todays new construction. Snakes all the way from the enclosed sewer system, thru the network of sewer lines and into your smaller 4" lines and then appear in the tiolet??? Common now this has to be a hoax??

I don't worry about snakes in my toilet. But I do worry about snakes in my yard. Since I'm not educated on Florida snakes....and after hearing Samhass's snake stories...I stopped at Barnes and Noble today and bought a Florida snake book.
You can bet I'm gonna know my snakes very soon...and be able to identify them and know if they are dangerous or not.
Ewwww...snakes scare the heck outta me!

I have lived in Florida for almost 30 years and never heard of this except on this link. I did see a snake in our garage one time, but never in the house, let alone the toliet.

Ditto, except never in the garage.
There are a couple of hard-core snakes in FL, and doing a little research on them is prudent, especially if you like to trek through woods.

:yikes: Just the thought of snakes creeps me out. I won't even walk in our yard or on our lawn at night, and really try to avoid it even during the day. My friend that used to live in Florida told me that once she went into her garage and there was a snake in the wheel well of her car. I've been careful since we moved here, but luckily haven't seen any. Good idea on the book, Bright. I wouldn't know a harmless one from a poisonous one. I suppose when someone revived me they would let me know! LOL :joke:
Nice pic Handie. Is that you on the floor??? LOL

One way that critters can get into the toilet is through the exhaust pipe on the roof. This pipe allows the sewer gases to escape. If a critter falls down one out of curiosity it may be able to get through the toilet trap as it searches for daylight. I don't know much about plumbing but I would imagine that this is feasible. Screens across the pipes could solve this i would imagine.

Just to assure you, my snake stories to Bright are about snakes in my yard or neighbors yards. No snakes in the toilet, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!!!

The only other snakes to be concerned with should be in Washington this week, but Congress is scheduled to close out for the 7/4 weekend.

I don't know Steve. I saw a big water moccasin about 10 days ago. I told my husband that if I get bitten by a moccasin or gator, I'm outta here!
I feel your pain about the Washington snakes though. Their bites can be just as toxic.

I've learned much about cottonheads, rattlers, and copperheads. It has been an educational experience, for sure. Great book I have!

Sgt. I guess it makes sense since the drain pipes aren't full of water most of the time. No need to hold their little varmint breath!

Keep the seat up so you can get a full view in the WC before you sit.

Chuck
That could cause problems for us women who go to the bathroom during the night and forget to check the seat first. It's happened to me more than once! Not exactly like this icon but you know what I mean...lol. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh96/renielarson/Dog_in_toilet.gif

Has ANYONE here in TV had a snake in their house via the toilet???? Seriously????? I did hear of one under the toilet seat on one of the golf courses...but that's outside. If snakes can come into the house via the sewer system...I may be OUTTA HERE !!!

TV, no. California, yes. A beautiful boa lost by my neighbor was "found" by another neighbor when she was going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Poor dear couldn't use that bathroom again and it's been over 10 years. The plumber who got the snake out said it had probably escaped via the toilet, found the sewer and connection to the other neighbor's house and voila! one snake in the can.
It is possible to have critters come up a toilet. It is also very rare, especially if the toilet is used frequently.
