Poco, a raven haired beauty, was nicknamed for the area she grew up in, the Pocono Mountains. Poco's given name is..............

Her home was only about 50 miles from CasaSamhass, a soaring manse set upon a cliff. The cliff was made of diabase rock. Many assumed the huge jumbled rocks in the area were from the ice age. They weren't. Volcanic eruptions had left the area filled with huge boulders and caves. Poco had come to this area because it was rich in Indian history. The Lenape Indian tribe lived in the hills and caves on The Ridge. They had many sacred sites in the area. Drumming circles were still well attended in the area. Many of the drummers had no Lenni Lenape blood but were intrigued by the history of the tribe. Lenape blood ran in a portion of Poco's blood.

Merci, Princess Ronda. No, I an an ordinary squaw.

Anyway.....Poco walked some of the forested trails in search of old Indian sites. She came upon a drumming circle that had four strategically placed totem poles in the North,South, East and West positions. The poles had been carved from cedar taken from the woods.
The colors on the pole came from natural pigments. Seven people sat around a fire...

chanting and drumming. Poco knew they were white pretenders. The one was chanting to the tune of In a godda da vida by Iron Butterfly. Poco sniffed the air to see if any particular weed possibly associated with that era wafted through the air. All she smelled was the sage they burned. She smiled at the memories of her ancestors as they burned the sage to bring good fortune to the tribe. The participants used turkey feathers to fan the smoking sage and release it's aroma to the winds. The turkey feathers could also be used to make good luck tokens. Poco approached a seated male. He was white but wore a mohawk hairstyle and little more than a loin cloth. He rose and stepped to the fire briefly before turning to her. "I am Tawktwan. How did you find us?" he asked.
Poco looked at him and replied....

This ridge you are on is called "The Dog's Spine". It is a place my people came to long ago. I have permission from the current landowners to walk the trails and look for Indian artifacts.
My ancestors held these hill sacred.

Poco elaborated. "Look at the plants around you. Black Cohosh, Golden seal, Bloodroot, Jack in the Pulpit, Ferns, Ginseng and other herbs are in abundance. The forest canopy and soil make this an ideal spot for these herbs. Our tribal medicine woman set great store by these herbs. They flourish in this diabase soil under the canopy of these towering trees."

Authors note: Ronda, I think you meant this to be a humorous story. I have sort of hijacked both Indian princess stories and turned them serious. For this I apologize. They just seem like such wonderful characters and my fingers just start flying on the keyboard. So, I wish people would tell me to choose one and leave the other one the H alone! I really like both Fall and Poco but know I shouldn't do both. The two of them should meet someday. ;D

Sam...Let your fingers do the walking; you're doing great. Keep it up and get all that talent out for us to enjoy.

We have two different types of authors here:

Sam.... who does extensive research and builds a terrific story; and

Rhonda... with a hilarious quick, dry wit and wild imagination that is so enjoyable.

Both are so very talented. May I suggest that you both write stories of your very own for us to enjoy? What say, think you both need to use your own techniques, yes?

Suggest that Sam write the mystery and Rhonda writes the comedy.

PS: And.....if my suggestion goes over like a wet balloon, I don't know either one of you!! Kapeesh? :dontknow: crap wav

Poco continued.....

Poco walked a short distance from the circle. She saw a dozen plants of black cohosh in full bloom. Their delicate flowers appealed to her. They decorated the woods. Spring flowers of the woods had long faded. The flowers of summer now held court. She thought about showing the plant treasures to Tawktwon, but thought better of it. She found small
ginseng plants and marveled that the white tailed deer had not found them first. As she walked farther into the woods, she saw where rare showy orchids had bloomed in tiny patches just weeks earlier. She would definitely tell none of the drummers about this.

samhass

She walked further into the woods and came upon more black cohosh. In the tribes early days, they used the plant to heal snakebites, treat menstrual problems, and to induce visions. The early white settlers thought it was an herb of witchcraft. A woman caught with the herb could be put to death for possessing an instrument of witchcraft. She dreamily walked on..touching the lovely white and violet tops of hesperis that bloomed freely in this section of the woods.

samhass

She startled three deer that were grazing on the forest floor. Her ancestral tribe would kill a deer and no part of it was wasted. Small bones were turned into awls and needles. The jawbone would be used to scrape the hide to ready it for curing. Now she just admired their beauty and chuckled to think of them eating all the flowers planted by the suburban families.

Beats me!! It's my birthday and I'm heading to KBs for breakfast, going to an afternoon party and then an evening party. Elastic waistband..here I come. I need to be on a long woods hike with Poco instead of in TV eating my way through the day.

I don't know, Susan. Poco is being all serious about nature and her ancestors. I'm about to change all that.

Poco had a mood swing. She quickly left the woods, jumped into her Lotus and drove down to Philadelphia International airport. She had a wild urge to visit her dear cousin Fall/Spring.
She landed at MCO, caught the shuttle to TV, and alit at LSL only to find....

I agree with Ronda, Sam. I want to read your story and I don't really want anybody else to help write it. I think you should write it like serialized story published everyday in the newspaper. They used to do that when we were young.
Do it Sam. I love to read what you write.

BUMP for SAM!!!!!

samhass
09-08-2008, 01:59 AM
Thanks for the bump Ronda. Life will be rather hectic for me for the next 6 weeks. Unless someone else takes Poco back to Pennsylvania, she has to stay in TV for now. I am going back to Pa myself...but I shall return! Will Poco join me while I am up there? Will I become enchanted with the woods all over again? Will I want to return to TV? For natural beauty, Pennsylvania is tough to beat. TV is about the people though...wonderful, fun people.

Flip Flop.

Sam got in her cart and went to the square. She found Poco at Starbucks sitting quietly, pensively, sipping a large coffee. Sam got a coffee and sat across from Poco at the small table. "Sam to Poco. A penny for your thoughts." she said. Poco slowly smiled. "I have had a lovely time here in TV....but..it's time for me to head back. I have so much work to do and yet I want to shrug my responsibilities and stay here. I want to go out and play all day but I realize I have not earned the right."
Sam looked at her solemnly. "I am returning soon. Why don't you take the same flight and go back with me. You can stay at my home in the woods and do your research. I must tell you though, the caretaker told me a large black bear came right up to the back door."
Poco laughed in delight. "That close to Philadelphia?" she asked. "I'll book my flight,Sam, and return with you. I'll stay at your place and explore the woods. I understand that a magnificent older woman lives on your "mountain" and has many tales to tell."
"Yes" replied Sam. "Her name is Edith and she is in a 1957 edition of National Geographic.
She knows much lore of the woods. I will take you to meet her when we get to Hawk Hill."

Poco looked at Sam, smiled impishly and said "We're not leaving for a while yet. Let's enjoy the rest of our time here."
RR ,Sam is not going for 6 weeks. She has gotten to used to the warm sunshine. The question becomes How long will Poco stay?

Just Susan

"There you two are" cried Fall. "I have been looking everywhere for you. I have some news to tell you. Susan has sent word that she is on the lookout for the Mankini and has put detective in chage of the watch...and..and, well, Buff is back in town." (sigh)

"And Sam I heard you are leaving and well, you just have to take me with you. From your house I will find my way to the Great Lakes and canoe across to Lake Superior and then I will portage to the head waters of the Mississippi and paddle down it, to Susan's house. Hope I make it before it freezes."

Poco, Fall and Sam high fived one another. They looked forward to their journey. Sam told Fall to look for the red mankini when she arrived at Susan's. The three of them burst into laughter. Their journey was days away yet. For now they would enjoy the sunshine and the people of TV. Poco got on the phone and started rounding up her posse of buddies.
