we went to fill Up our car today. Still wondering why the price is so high...In MI, we pay some of the highest in the country, and they are 12 cents lower. That wasn't my main concern. Since when is the price of $2.39 a CASH ONLY price? We used our debit card and it was $2.46. There seems to be a new sign out front next to the price, saying cash only. Have always used a debit card and the price has never gone up because of that type of payment. Has anyone else noticed this, and for how long?

That is a common practice of stations on the interstate going way back to the early 2000's. I think it stinks so I try and stay away from those places.

They have always been higher. When they built the Marathon, they lowered their price for a while. They took advantage of being the only game in town. I will never go there. I did find out of the reason Florida has higher gas prices than other states is because there are no underground pipelines, the oil comes in by boat.

It's been that way since we moved here in October. I didn't notice for a while because I usually use Shell cards bought during the Publix promo's and the station treats them like cash. The first time I used a debit it was an eye opener.

I stay away from that station. There is no good reason for doing business they way they do other than pure greed.

I use diesel. Ever since the Marathon station opened at Pinellas Plaza their prices have dropped considerably.

The price per gallon posted on 466A at the SHELL, has reflected the CASH price for quite some time. If you look at the MARATHON's price per gallon posted on 466A, that is the Credit Card price. They have a smaller sign, which of course is lower, I believe about 6 cents, which is the credit card price. I always use the Marathon station. I have never liked the Shell. I wish a Wawa would open in the area.

I stay away from that station. There is no good reason for doing business they way they do other than pure greed.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for any business person who takes on the responsibility to make a payroll, pay their suppliers, keep their customers coming back; and to provide housing, food, school, medical, clothing for their own family. All the while working to save for their future/retirement. And to consistently do this for years or decades in spite of periods of economic hard times.

To say there is no good reason to try to make a profit perhaps is a lack of understanding of what makes our free enterprise system so rewarding for those who work smart/hard.

As consumers we can simply avoid doing business with someone we think is "too greedy".

I filled up my big ole truck for less than $5 at the Shell station yesterday; God knows I am loving the Winn-Dixie fuel perks.

It helps considerably that the biggest perks are for some of the wine products.

Is the Publix gas promotion advertised in their flier?
How often do they offer it?

I'm with you. The fuel perks are great. You can get some pretty good discounts when you buy your wine there. And a double bonus if you buy 4 at a time when you do so you get an additional 10% off your purchase.

Our only regret is that neither of our cars take over 8 Gallons to fill up! :clap2:

I agree on both counts. After shopping yesterday I'm sitting pretty with $1.70 in perks.

Here is the difference between 466A Shell Station and the Marathon station in Pinellas Plaza. At the Shell station u can select debit but it still won't give u the cash price. You only get cash price if you go in and give them cash. At the Marathon station you can select debit at the pump and it will give you the cash price. On the Gas Buddy app they both have currently cash prices of $2.39. But unless you have cash for for the Shell station you will pay $2.45. I don't like the Shell station. The pumps are getting harder to read as the screens fade due to weather and sun. The owner ripped me off once. Although it was for only $1.75. The pump jumped before I even picked up the handle and I went in to talk to him and he wouldn't even talk to me about it. So I will go out of my way when I can to go else where.

If you download the Clark's app for your smartphone there is a one time promotion where you'll get a 50 cent a gallon credit. Pump your gas, take your receipt inside with the app, don't press the button to show the promotion until ready, it will time out in 3 minutes and be gone) and you'll get a Marathon gift card. Sweet deal. We've used it on both of our iPhones and now have a $12 card.

Shell is a "top tier" gas station and Marathon is not. Google "top tier gas" and you'll see that there is a better quality of gas sold at Shell and other top tier stations, using detergents to keep your engine clean and not apt to foul with deposits.
That said, I hate giving my business to that Shell but for a few cents more as compared to Marathon I'll buy at Shell. Usually though I'll buy on 466 where the both Shell stations there seem to not play that game of cash or charge pricing. Bottom line is my usual purchase in the cart is about 3 gals, not a big deal if I pay 6 cents more per gal. but know I'm getting a top tier gas.

OK the Colony Shell finally has an owner that can keep gas in the tanks and has a good little Breakfast bar. The cash only price has been up for quite sometime I believe since the new owner took over at least. As others have said use your Winn Dixie perks and get the Shell card when Publix has the coupon. I always buy a few when their on coupon. When I don't have Shell CC I use my regular CC. I'll be damned if I'm going to drive to 466 to save .90 if I'm filling my car or .30 if I'm filling my Golf Cart. Just makes no sense at all. Keep up the good work Colony Shell. JMO:bigbow:

Gas is gas--the new clean burn engines run clean--spark plugs are good for @ least 100k miles. All gas runs thru the same pipelines, all gas is the same. During the gas crises of the 70's we used everything & our cars ran. I have 2 Benz's and both cars run well on any premium. Use the cheapest & you're ahead of the game.

Google top tier gas. Additives that are put in the gas in top tier gas stations make the difference for clean engines and these top tier stations are recommended by GM, Ford, Mercedes, BMW, Honda and other major manufactures. These additives won't make your car run better, only keep it running longer and cleaner. All gas is the same until it is put into the tanker
and the additives are added. What you used in the 70's was 40 years ago and things have changed.

This is the real reason for the difference in price for cash and debit / credit.

Interchange fee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interchange_fee)

Simple answer is it costs the merchant more for offering the convenience to the customer. It is NOT a greed issue.

Not everyone is out to get you.

The higher price for using a credit card is to cover the fees charged by Visa/Mastercard or whatever you use. Get a Shell card and it stops. It used to be that businesses were not allowed to charge a higher price when using a Visa but apparently that is no longer the case so I guess the card issuers have changed their rules.

Has anyone owned a gas station or knows someone? I often wondered how much the station makes on a gallon of gas and if the profits go up when the prices go up?

I consider myself a pro-business individual, but this one drives me nutz. As far as I'm concerned the fee that a bank charges a business for a credit card sale is a cost to the business for being exposed that bank's customer base. There is no good reason to then charge that fee back to the customer. It is the COST OF DOING BUSINESS. I do however agree with other previous posts here that I do not and WILL NOT give any gas station my $$$ if they use this ridiculous practice. This is free enterprise and I will always exercise my right to go somewhere else.

Nothing wrong with being pro-business and pro-consumer and the same time.

Doubled checked with a bud of mine , who was in the wholesale fuel delivery business

!) all gasoline is the same, they all put the same detergents in
2) the only difference is tracers-which enables the distributers to find out who is buying off brand gas

They all put detergents in but auto manufactures are saying top tier stations use enough detergents to keep your engine clean. If they skimp on detergents then they can't get the top tier rating.
