View Full Version : SINGLE WANNABE"S
So I live in Colorado visited tv 3 times, did the lifestyle thing once and have bought the TV thing hook line and sinker. I keep seeing people post about how they are trying to get to tv but cant sell or whatever. So I wonder, How many of us are there out there? Are you trying to start a new life like I am?

benj....... thanks for initiating this topic! YES, I'm a single wannabee and I've been hanging out here at TOTV for a couple of months. However, I have not visited TV yet; perhaps this fall or winter I'll make the journey from southern Oregon to Florida and do the lifestyle preview. I lived in Miami Florida for 40 years before retiring and moving "out west" for an adventure. I'm living in a small (2k pop.) rural town, 8 miles from Grants Pass, 11 miles from Medford, and 23 miles from Ashland. My old bones just can't get used to the long, dreary, frosty winters so I look forward to the time when I can relocate back to Florida and partake in the many social opportunities.
It has been quiet in this Singles Forum for the last couple of days and I'm hoping we don't get bumped out again. C'MON SINGLES............. SAY SOMETHING 040

I visited TV when I rented a place in Ocala for 3 months back in 2006. I was referred to TV by the guy I rented from who actually lived in TV for 5 years. He told me how easy it would be for me to meet many single and widowed women in TV but my visits were limited in nature since I could not have access to all the amenities. But I did enjoy the strolls around Market Square and Sumpter Landing where I got a good feeling for the atmosphere. I sit up here, 10 miles north of Ohare in a Chicago suburb waiting patiently for my house to sell. I hope I don't have to spend another dismal winter here!!

Glad y'all like my idea of "being in the same boat" and sailing is among my most treasured memories from living in Miami all those years. The sailboat pic was taken in 1979 while I was aboard another sailboat (a Watkins27) on Biscayne Bay.
One of my goals (wishes) is to sail the Florida waters again someday ::) I'm hoping there is a Sailing Club in TV 8)

Hey Singles,
Any ideas of what will be among the first things you do when you get settled into being a resident of TV? Of course, meeting and greeting all TOTV members. After all, how can we forget how helpful and courteous all the folks of TOTV have been to we wannabees, both couples and singles!! But, after that, what activities will you check out first?
Me? I would like to participate in the "Sunshine" committee of the Singles Clubs. It is described as ...
"Our goal is to reach out and give our fellow members a show of kindness or a helping hand in time of need. Simple, thoughtful things such as a card that fits the occasion, or a home or hospital visit, driving them to and from the doctor or store, picking up medicine or groceries -- just letting them know that someone cares and is thinking about them."
Sounds pretty cool to me. Also, just about any of the sports activities from softball to tennis, and just about any thing else that can keep off the couch and out of bakeries. The various Singles clubs seem to have great participation by their members. To paraphrase ConeyIsBabe, we're all in this together.
What clubs, churches, and educational pursuits will you tend to join after you have unpacked your last box? Is there someone out there who can teach this single guy the fine art of line dancing?? ;D Just can't get the hang of it although, I must admit, by the time "happy hour" ends I'm usually dancing pretty well...perhaps, it's just my imagination as "The Temptations" said. :dontknow:

My sister and brother-in-law moved to TV a few years ago. I visited last year and fell in love with the place. I hope to relocate summer '09. I'll take my time "settling in" because I will be buying all new furniture, but won't do so all at once.
I plan to first enjoy evenings on the Squares, learning my way around TV, meet TOTVers, join some clubs. I'll have to determine what sports activities I want to join. I'll take some golf lessons and see if I can pick up the game. I'll play shuffleboard, and if I can find some volleyball or basketball teams, may get back into those games. I don't plan to initially join the singles clubs. I'll first see if I can find a "crew of characters" to be my friends/playmates. If unsuccessful doing it on my own, then I'll join the singles clubs. I will join other clubs (the Civil War is one interest), I'll definitely have an annual pass to Walt Disney World since I just love it. It'll be great living so close. I'll do some local touring around Florida.
There is a class where you can learn how to line dance. I think others have mentioned it. If you search "line dance" on this site, you'll probably find where it's discussed.

tkret......... great question......... one that should stimulate some responses from all the other single wannabees reading this forum, but who haven't yet posted!
I'm not very athletic and will not be playing golf or ball activities but as far as dancing goes, I always favored the slow-dance anyway. Photography, Computer, clubs for a start!
I have been single for a very long time, by choice, and have attended my share of "singles clubs" but have never mastered the art of walking into a room filled with strangers and making friends instantly! I would much rather participate in an activity that interests me. I would join the Fitness Center because I want access to an indoor swimming pool. I am anxious to take some Learning Center Classes - so many choices - art? Spanish? or French? :dontknow:
P.S. I sure do wish there is a sailing club ;D

ConeyIsBabe,
two observations that I question....(1) from the sound of your postings I think that you would have NO problem making friends instantly. (2) Start a sailing club when you get here. I don't know the first thing about it but I would be willing to learn! Just call me Gilligan.
And you are quite correct about the Learning Center Classes... so many WONDERFUL choices. It will be an exciting day when we hear from you that you sold your home.

Hi CIBabe
What the heck am I STILL doing on this site at this time of night? It's just so much fun and interesting to read the comments, advice, and humor of TOTV members.
Anyway, you stated that you suspect that I will be a TV resident way before you ... well, I may have something to share with you later this week. In addition, I will still be single and I WILL save a seat for you at Town Square. :beer2: And by the way, I love the little wink guy (or gal) in your message.
You stay positive and I'll continue to lift you up in prayer for a great blessing to come you way. It sounds like you have a beautiful home and there IS a savvy buyer out there who will recognize it, too.

I don't mean this meanly...I really don't...please forgive me if you take my question wrong...
But...I don't understand this thread's title....

I guess my question is....are you single or are you not or are you not single and want to be?
I'm confused...and btw...I'm not single and don't wannabe.

Good question Brightspot01. The thread is found on the singles section of the Forum. Although anyone can participate it is mostly "attended" by single folk who are not, yet, Villagers but want to be. Hence, wannabees. It's mainly an attempt to assure future residents that there are activites in The Villages for single residents as well as couples.
brightspot, I started the thread. Single wannabe's are village wannabe's who are single. The single thread doesn't seem to be used alot and I just wanted other singles, or what the heck widows to post their stories. Some of us are out here going nuts trying to get to tv but the real estate market or whatever is keeping us from getting there. Hearing that others are frustrated and going through the same struggles is helpful. I was married 34 years together 37 and single is a hard pill to swallow. I'm trying to start a new life and it's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

I do wish more TOTVers would participate on this fun forum so us "wannabees" can keep the faith.

Hello, again, brightspot01
very cute graphics but, please, no need to be hit over the head. That was a very good question you posed. I can certainly understand how the title of this thread is unclear. You stated in your posting, "I'm (you) not single and I don't wannabe". There are some of us single people who don't wannabe, some who wannabe, some who don't care either way, some by choice, some not ... but if we're reading this thread and live outside TV, we "wannabe" your neighbors and TOTV friends.
Thanks, brightspot01, for helping us keep this thread "alive". wav :clap2:

CIB,
FYI, as you might imagine...there is a sailing club; they meet monthly at Lake Miona Rec Center and plan various excursions. Recently, they got 'permission' to launch a couple of boats and sail on Lake Sumter....it was a beautiful sight to see sailcloths in the breeze over Lake Sumter.

hi single friends,
wanted to tell coney island babe that we have a lot in common. i am from new york, also, and have had many years of "western adventure", the latest five years in a very small town in north dakota...i am packing up a u-haul truck mid-august and heading to my new place in TV. want to hitch a ride? luckily for me i did not have a home to sell...good luck with yours. i also admire your computer savvy for posting photos, etc. i don't know how to do any of that and can barely post a response! :)
have enjoyed everyone's comments. as for what i plan to do after i am settled in, i first will join the french-speaking club, the philosophy club and the paranormal psychology club. i may start an ARE group. will definitely be dancing just about every night, probably most often at lake sumter because closer to my home. look forward to meeting all of you.
as for the gentleman who is a widower, none of us "wannabe" that, but many of us are and will understand where you are coming from...i am sure you will have plenty of companionship at TV and that is most important at this stage of our lives, i think...

Villages07...... Thanks for telling me about the Sailing Club; I was confident that there must be boating clubs at TV - something to look forward to !

There are good instructions for posting pictures on the Picture Perfect forum. Click on How To Post Pictures and follow the steps. Of course, you must already have your photos on your hard drive or on a cd or disk........... do you ???
I think, for us wannabees, it enhances our effort to make friends if we submit a photo; just my opinion. I realize many people are hesitant to post their picture on the world-wide-web but I have been posting mine ever since my first computer 8 years ago, and it hasn't hurt me so far ::)

CIB, of course you're invited to be one of the "crew of characters"! All Single TOTVr's (STOTV) are invited to be in the "crew of characters". As we can see, many of us already are. ;) It doesn't matter how or why one is single (widowed/divorced/never married), just that you are currently single.
While most of us will attend the TOTV gatherings at Crisper's (myself included), I've a suggestion for the STOTV's. As each of us relocates to TV, we have a gathering of STOTV "characters", to welcome the newcomer(s). It can be an evening or afternoon gathering at a local watering hole. While not everyone drinks, I think if we can find a quiet bar where we can all sit, talk, have munchies, it would be a nice way of getting to know each other and of greeting the newbies. I'm not suggesting a "formal" singles "club" of TOTV members, but an informal "crew" of TOTV singles (only singles). Yes, I also plan to associate with married couples, but I think couples have many opportunities for socializing. I think us singles need more opportunities and support for each other. What do the rest of you singles think of this idea?
RIPWHO, yes we did have plans to raise a toast. If I recall correctly, you were going to request some tunes from Eric Clapton...Cocaine being one. I rescheduled my relocation for one year and now expect to be there in summer '09. Sounds like you may beat me to it, huh?

BestMickey ......... thank you for accepting me into the "crew of characters" for STOTVers, it's a wonderful idea....... kinda like a welcome wagon ;D It's fun possibilities like this that give us TV wannabees something to look forward to.

Bestmickey,
Great idea about having a STOTV get-together. Yes, couples have almost a built in social structure whereas singles kind of move in and out of various circles. And, of course, there are singles who eventually want to join the couples crowd with a partner of their own. An unofficial (unsanctioned) group of singles who "met" and became friends because of TOTV is a fine idea. I, too, plan on a TV arrival during the summer of next year BUT I'm beginning to doubt that I can wait until then.
Now, can someone tell me what "Crisper's" is and what the gatherings are all about? Thanks
bestmickey
07-08-2008, 02:18 AM
tkret, Crisper's is a restaurant in TV. TOTVr's have a monthly gathering on an afternoon. If you do a search for Crispers, you should pull up the schedule and directions. I hope you do make it to TV faster than me ... for your sake. I'll be envious, but I'll get there before long!
tkret
07-08-2008, 02:22 AM
Thanks, bestmickey, for the info on Crisper's. Is it by Sumter Landing or Spanish Springs or elsewhere with TV and have you had the opportunity to attend any of the gatherings. Thanks, again, for the reply ... and we WILL get the STOTV up and running!!!

No, I haven't yet gone to Chrispers. I've only visited TV once, in June 07. Since I probably won't be back until summer '09, you will probably get there before me. The group looks like they're having fun in all the photos I've seen. Enjoy!

Hi all...
Hope is not to late to add myself as a single wannabe -- Just returned (7/6/08) from my very first visit to TV and I'm hooked. I did the Lifetime Preview thing and was totally overwhelmed at this place - its great!! Now the big thing is to sell my townhouse in NY and pick out my new home in TV. I can't believe I'm so turned on by TV - if all goes well I'll move there without knowing anyone there but it won't be long before you meet people. I attend Life Long Learning classes at Stonybrook University here and its great -- can't wait to try it at TV. Love TOTV...

For the Single Wannabe's if your down for a preview visit during the time for the TOTV luncheons at Crispers (third Friday of the month at 3:00) plan on that as part of your visit. That way you can see the faces of some of the TOTV members and have a Villages social. Also post when you will be here and see if you can meet some TOTVers at the squares at a set time. It's a great way to have a group of friends in place who are Villagers.

Hi DickY,
What a generous invitation!! and a great way to meet and greet newbies and wannabies. I will be in TV in mid-Sept. but, with MUCH, regret it will not be at the time of the monthly meeting and I'll only be there for about 3 days. Now that my home has sold I've decided to take a quick trip and meet with a Realtor. I don't expect to moving into TV for a few months, however. Your invitation is a further indication that The Villages is truly Florida's Friendliest Hometown. Sure wish I could have made the luncheon, though.

Angel, I moved to TV knowing one couple. Their interests and mine were very different and they were and are very busy with their friends. So, while knowing someone here, I really moved in as a stranger. Between TOTV, my neighborhood and bridge, I've found some wonderful people both single and coupled. Trust me, when you move down here you won't be a stranger long unless you choose to be.
And tk, just give a shout out a day or two before you'll be coming down. Have no fear, a get together of some sort can be arranged for either lunch, one of the squares in the evening, dinner or even Katie Belle's. If nothing else, TOTVers are a friendly lot (even if sometimes downright strange). ;)

Hi redwitch,
Another very nice invitation that I will surely take advantage of. I'll let you and the group know a few days before my visit and, hopefully, I can join you and become acquainted. Because I will not be staying in TV, and haven't had the pleasure of getting to know ANYBODY there, I will not be allowed into Katie Belle's (just my luck!) but I would love to meet somewhere. Many thanks for your kindness.

I'll keep an eye on this Singles forum - wish me luck so I too won't have to spend another chilly winter in New England. We all seem to be in the same boat. Keep a good thought. My only worry is missing the grandchildren. Hope they keep to their promise and come visit often. Love this site - keep it up. Thanks CIB for pressing on.

As I have no definite plans, at this time, to visit TV... or for relocation there.... I will have to depend on keeping warm this coming winter by reading all y'all's posts and I'll be :'(

Thanks, redwitch, it'll be fun seeing what's behind those doors. Years ago Jim Lowe sang about "What's behind the Green Door". Poor guy, I wonder if he ever found out. Thanks and looking forward to it.
.....and ConeyIsBabe: we MUST get that place of yours sold QUICKLY.

tkret....... thank you for the good wishes. I'm being soberly realistic and - from reading all accounts of the economy - I will have to remain a "wannabee" until further notice and will live vicariously through all you fortunate TVers.
It's not so bad now.... summer in s/Oregon is delightful and fun; but the winters are long and bleak and I have to stay indoors until the frost & black ice melts off around noon :dontknow:

CIB, Tkret, BestMickey, and all other STOTVers: I think the Welcome Wagon idea is a great one. I have a house in Caroline but will not be moving there till June '09 because of work commitments. I would love to host a June (maybe mid June) STOTV'ers gathering at my house. Sign me up, ok?

I'm keeping an open-mind and staying optimistic about returning to Florida and possibly TV. I would love to meet all the nice people who have posted on the Singles Forum.

Hi chachacha......... I just love seeing recent photos of TOTVers.... thanks for posting it.
Also, THANKS for the invite. If I do make it to TV this coming winter, it will be with my daughter and we will go for the Lifestyle Preview; but it is very kind of you to make the offer.
I'm already buying a new batch of fleece long-john underwear to wear this coming winter (and that's what I wear indoors). cold_cold

I remember you mentioning a long time boyfriend but haven't noticed you mentioning him lately. Is he coming with you on your Preview Visit, too? I thought you mentioned that when you moved (hopefully) to The Villages, that he would be coming, too. Have your plans changed? Or, did I not read your previous posts correctly?

hi bright........ YES.... you have a good memory ;)
My gentleman friend and I came out west together in 01 and are still a couple. However, he loves living in Oregon, he loves the cold winters, he hates the thought of returning to Florida so there we are.
If/when I do relocate to Florida it will be alone. My daughter already went back to s/FL where she has a lifetime of friends. Actually, I also have some lifelong friends back in Miami but dread the thought of going back there. TV seems like a likely option for me.
Thanks for asking ;D

Moving again can be a difficult decision but it would be somewhat like coming back home for you. Having family and friends already here in Florida would make the decision easier I would think.
The Villages is not only a beautiful place but has so much to offer, as you know. Good luck selling your home and moving here.

bright....... THANK YOU for the good luck wishes.
Honestly, it's not looking good for the sale of my property, in fact - I took down my FSBO sign today :'( Now that the weather is fabulous and I'm running all over Medford & Grants Pass I'm not so depressed as in the winter when I'm shut-in because of the frost on my car and black ice on the roads. We'll see how desperate I get to consider reducing my price for next spring.
In the meantime......... a Wannabee I am and I'll keep warm in the winter by reading all y'all's posts about your fun times in TV :dontknow:
Are there any single wannabees that want to rent a place for a month or two and try out TV? I am anxious to get down there and see what the TV has to offer. Any singles out there want to give it a try.
I am a fun loving 61 year old widow....just want to have some TV fun.

jmemc,
That is a very interesting thought and a great subject to start not just for single wannabees but for everyone who is trying to sell while waiting to relocate to The Villages. Since it was your idea why not post a new topic and let's see how many are in that boat.

Other single wannabees who haven't posted lately - I hope y'all are OK - any change of plans regarding TV ? Any special plans for the holidays ?
I'm taking a mini-trip to the Napa Valley & SF later this week to do a little wine tasting :beer3: and visit friends/family - maybe take some pics .

Coney:
I didn't want your post to go completely unnoticed!
I returned a week ago from a 10-day Caribbean cruise, over Thanksgiving. Huge fun, despite rough seas one day [in nautical terms, "rough" seems to translate to 7-1/2 to 12 foot waves, really noticeable even on a 113,000 ton ship holding over 3,000 guests and 1,200 crew].
Travelled with a single female friend from Nashville and a pair of cruising friends from Deland, Florida. The latter two are inveterate cruisers; he has 80 cruises under his belt now!
I still shy away a little from "singles" events. But, really enjoy travelling as one!

Thank you swrinfla for the response ! It gets very quiet on the Singles Forum so I just want to maintain some sort of cyber-relationship with y'all, until the day comes when I can make TV a reality.
I enjoyed a 5-day trip to the Napa Valley and San Francisco and was amazed to see so many people spending money at very upscale restaurants - (what resession?)
Tonight we are expecting the first snowstorm of the winter..... perhaps 2 inches in my area and up to 12 inches in Ashland :22yikes:
Again, swinfla..... THANKS for acknowledging my post and .......
HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all TOTVers !l

Hi CIB,
I started shivering when you mentioned snow. :cold: I have been very busy packing, and getting ready for my big move to TV...I can't wait. I close on my home next Friday, and then after Christmas head SOUTH to find a new home. I am really looking forward to the move, but it will be bitter sweet as I leave my family in MD. I hope you can make a visit in the Spring, I have found it to truly be the friendliest hometown.

I've been busy helping a brother of mine. Day after Thanksgiving I brought him to the ER and one day later, he had a "very messy gallbladder" removed the hard way (not laproscopically). I came home with him until he's recovered enough to be independent again. Bad timing for the storm/power outages. But, the outage only lasted ~ 12 hrs at his home. I took some nice photos with my cell phone, but I don't have the cord to hook to his computer.
I also wish everyone HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Just wanted to add my name to the "list" of single wannabee's ..... I'm renting near Spanish Springs from Jan to the end of March this year for the first time. I would love to find out that this is just the place for me - Widowed 5 years and my children all live in different states - I'm ready for the warm weather and some great new friends!! Hope to sell my townhouse soon and really seriously look at houses in TV...the market is not cooperating yet but I have high hopes 2009 will be a magical year for me!
Wishing all of you Happy Holidays and a health New Year!!

I am packing and should arrive in TV on January 1, after all the excitment is over. I am hoping to meet up with this group and do some of the activities. I will be there for a month and a half and will see if I want to spend more time in the area.
Can't wait to meet you all.

I also noticed that there were some really interesting courses offered . There were art and music appreciation courses, I think. I have investigated so many aspects that I forgot where I saw these, but I know it was TV .

I just sent you a private message..... check it out :coolsmiley:
I'm afraid to say this out loud but after almost 3 years, I think I have my house sold in Colorado. Closing is 2/27/2009. I have almost worn out my St Joseph.
Now that I may be there soon, I'm so excited I dont know what to do next. I'm furiously packing and getting rid of stuff.
Is right after "season" a good time to buy? or is there a better time? And when do the Snowbunnies leave?
Anyway wish me luck and I'm thinking of Coney Island Babe and Sschuler and others who like me have been waiting for some time for my chance. Maybe just maybe I'm going to be a Villagers gonnabe.

Congratulations on the sale of your house. I found that July is a good time to make offers on houses. Owners seem to be more open for a good offer.

I'm really just writing because I wanted to get rid of that darn "NFL/beef stew" posting as the one of note on the board.
Whassup with you other wannabees? I'm hoping to find a long term rental (for 6 to 9 months) beginning this fall. I have one potential so far. I'm trying to find a vacant home so I won't have to put my things in storage.
Let's hear your plans, or what's new with ya'll?
