Driving home at 7:15 from Leesburg on 466A. We were turned back to Canal, couldn't go to Buena Vista. 2 police cars blocking road. Was there an accident? Does anyone know what happened?

not sure, just went by on my golf cart and looks like there are 3 or 4 cars with people in them near where the police and fire rescue cars are and a motorcycle and a car parked closer to BV but none of them looked like they had any damage like there had been an accident.

We passed by before any emergency responders were there. There was a young man lying motionless and bleeding alongside the street. Another younger man was with him. There was a motorcycle that had continued on by itself for a long, long way and was lying on its side on the edge of the golf course. There was another motorcycle parked next to the curb. There was quite a lot of debris on the street and along the path of the motorcycle. There was one other vehicle stopped on the street but it wasn't possible to tell if it had been involved or not. There were quite a lot of golf carts/people at the scene and a bystander was directing traffic on 466A. I've been praying for the young man ever since.

Coming home on golf cart trail in front of Sumter Place. We were blocked from entering the tunnel and told it was a hit and run fatality.

Around 10:15 the Medical Examiner arrived. Looks like he was getting a large plastic bag out. Not looking good.

Just saw this:The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a black Pontiac G5 that struck and killed a motorcyclist at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of CR466A and Buena Vista Boulevard.

The driver of the Pontiac then fled the scene of the accident.

FHP Troopers are searching for a white male driving a black Pontiac GT or G6, model year possibly 2005-2010. The vehicle will have damage to the passenger side and the passenger side outside mirror was broken off and recovered at the scene of the crash. Anyone with information concerning this accident is asked to contact the FHP by calling 813-631-4020 or Crime Stoppers

How very sad and upsetting. Twice yesterday we were cut off by someone too much in a hurry to wait their turn and now this!

In ..... We used to have signs saying, go s l o w...our children are playing here. We need signs that say grandparents are playing here...as some take just a little more time and don't need some impatient narcissism fool thinking they own the road.

I feel so sorry for the friends and family of this motor cyclist.

One can only hope they find the driver of the Pontiac. Sadly the punishment never fits the crime in these cases.

It was not on Miller. It was on 466A and it was east of Buena Vista heading westbound near Turtlemound golf course and the assisted living place on 466A.

I have friends with a golf course view that can see that intersection north of their home. They told me about a year ago they have seen many police and ambulances there. I don't know why. It doesn't appear dangerous. Since they told me I give an extra look in each direction and drive extra cautiously when crossing or turning.

On a four lane road, the passing lane is the outside lane and the driving lane is the inside lane.

Where I came from the passing (overtaking) lane was on the left, and the outside (right)lane was for slower traffic being overtaken.

I have read nothing to indicate that excessive speed was a factor in this tragic accident. Whatever the cause I too feel sorry for the young man on the motorcycle and his family.

You may want to rethink that......Keep right except to pass is the way we drive in this country.

On a four lane road, the passing lane is the outside lane and the driving lane is the inside lane.

This does not compute. The inside lane is the one closest to oncoming traffic and is the one used for passing in most US states that I have been in.

Inside/outside; passing/overtaking; oncoming/passing?

Let's simplify this and use left and right (or port and starboard for the old salts).

Driving below the speed of traffic in the left hand lane of any multi-lane road in Florida is not only annoying, it is now illegal thanks to 2014 revisions to Floridas Laws.

According to the newly revised Florida State Statute 316.081, a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed.

What is the cost for such a violation? In Pasco County it will cost violators $164 and three points on their driver license if ticketed. To be reasonable the law has two common sense exemptions where one may continue to drive in the left lane for a short period of time.

You are not required to move over to be passed if you are passing someone yourself.
You are not required to move over to be passed if you are about to make a left hand turn at a nearby intersection.
Short of those exemptions, it is now illegal to continually drive in the left lane when others are behind you. If approached from behind (regardless of speed) you must move over and allow others to pass you.

Experts in traffic and transportation say that if followed, this law will significantly reduce road rage issues, and allow for more efficient travel for all. Public awareness is the key to success

You are correct, Shimpy. It also happens to be the law.

To all you drivers who just love to drive the left lane, don't get upset when someone behind you flashes their lights at you or leans on their horn.

Get real! nobody going to wait in line at stop light in the right hand lane. Besides, some right hand lanes are turning lanes. Lines are long enough with 4 or 6 lanes. Yep I can see everybody driving down the toll road in the far right hand lane. If I am in the left hand lane I am passing some one or getting ready to turn. It's against the Law to SPEED in any lane. That's why you see two cars (three Cars, Four Cars) beside each other They are all trying to pass the person in the right hand lane AND NOT SPEED. I see law to try to keep slower traffic out of the left lanes.

And those who want single lane roundabout? That's not going to happen either. El Camino Reno was left hand lane was blocked off for the Bi-monthly flower planting Thursday or Wednesday? the lines on all three corners was 15 deep or more. Could you imagine all roundabout single lane?

Just saw this:The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking a black Pontiac G5 that struck and killed a motorcyclist at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of CR466A and Buena Vista Boulevard.

Just picked this up in this AM's online news feeds:

"The driver of a black Pontiac that struck and killed a motorcyclist Saturday evening in The Villages has turned himself into law enforcement.
The driver has been identified as 25-year-old John Owen Kiley of Fruitland Park, according to an updated accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol."

Living in one of the "aggressive driving" capitals of the US (NJ), and seeing this type of activity play out on everything from 4-lane "local" roads of the 466-A type to 6+ lane highways like 75 or the Turnpike, I'd be willing to make a friendly wager that if the guilty driver actually fesses up at some point, this will turn into a "20-something" testosterone-fueled highway duel of wills. The Pontiac, for whatever reason, slowed and was holding the cyclist back, frustrating him - then, he decides to "pass on the right" (usually illegal in most states) and get past the "idiot" in the left lane - Pontiac driver sees this happening and thinks "no way buddy!", and proceeds to swerve (not signal and slowly change lanes) into the right lane. His effort to cut off the cyclist goes beyond his ability to evaluate and calculate space, speed and time, and he clips the cyclist. Voila!! Accident report complete!!

Also would be interesting to know at some point as it hasn't been mentioned in any of the news reports was whether the deceased was wearing a helmet.

My first thought was the motorcycle which pulled into the right lane to pass was in the cars blind spot. The car went into the right lane not seeing the motorcycle because he didn't do a good head check before moving over.
I also believe the driver of the car will be caught quickly. He's probably got his car in a garage or hidden so as not to show the damage. The police have his rear view mirror which was knocked off. The Sumter cops have a very good record of investigating and finding the bad guys.

I'm willing to bet that less than 10% of drivers riding your tail in the left lane are not speeding, if you are maintaining the limit....well, too bad, learn some patience. On roads with roundabouts it would work better characterized as local and through lanes.

If you hold up traffic in the left lane...and you are not passing someone or approaching a left turn...you are breaking the law, even if the approaching vehicle is exceeding the speed limit.

I can't believe (well after living in TV for 6 months I can) there are folks defending the misuse of the PASSING lane. It is not your private cruising lane. Also if you pull out in front of me please ACCELERATE to at least the speed limit as quickly as possible. The gas pedal is also known as the accelerator and you pulled out in front of me. Some of the posters wouldn't last a week in a big city.

If you google the motorcyclist full name on the internet, you will see his mug shot photos along with a long list of offenses including several "reckless driving" charges and even more serious convictions! He wasn't a model citizen by far but it's still a shame to hear that someone has to die this young and so tragically.

Why would anyone spend time on Google looking up the name of a young person who died in a terrible accident? This young man was, at the very least, someone's son and now he is dead. "Model citizen" or not -- he tragically died and he should not become fodder for people who have nothing better to do then point out that his mug shot can be found online. A "long list of offenses" would include Googling, posting, and disparaging the deceased person's reputation.

It is tragic that someone died in an accident that was probably preventable with common sense. The young man's "long list of offenses" is going to be discussed as a defence tactic, right or wrong....

I agree I think the law was intended for interstate and turnpikes 30 years ago when 1/100th amount of traffic, but some how has worked it way down to CR's or local streets. What's next cow pasture trails? I can see everybody in Orlando driving in the right lane going to and from and leaving 4 lanes empty. I have to ask WHY is there more than one lane then?

I move over when speeder wants by. WHY?? so he can set the pace and get the ticket:1rotfl::1rotfl:
