Hi Folks. Just curious as to whether or not it's possible to grow a vegetable garden in TV. I have a CYV with fenced in backyard, so I'd be allowed if it's possible in Florida soil. How successful are tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, etc? Also, how about my favorite plant - the hydrangea? Anyone have veggie gardens? What did you plant? Any veggies really successful? Any that aren't?
Thanks for input.

Dreamweaver - Florida is great for growing vegetables! I like having a raised bed so I can mix my own soil. I have grown tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, bell peppers and even asparagus. Your favorite plant is also mine. I have three hydrangea's on the north east side of my home.

waverunner - thank you. A raised bed makes sense. When do you plant?

After two failed plants I gave up on hydrangeas here. It may have been the soil - or lack of real soil that led to their failure. They flourished for us back in NC!

...the soil on which The Villages has been built basically has no nutrients in it. It's about like beach sand. That's not to say that plants won't grow here. But you will have to amend your planting area before planting and then fertilize and water aggressively. If you do that, you can grow just about anything that can take the hot sun. Even some plants that get a little "sunburned" after planting will fairly quickly adjust to the hot sun.
