Perhaps someone can help me? We just returned from a cruise. I noticed the last couple of cruises we took I had a difficult time finding a quiet place to read a book. Yes ago they had the promenade deck for walkers and the lounge chairs outside to read. Of course that was perfect as I enjoy sitting outdoors. They did have a sanctuary but there was a charge to sit there. Has anyone encountered this or can anyone recommend a ship that still has quiet outdoor areas to read on a lounge chair?

One of the many nice things about a balcony room.

If on a Princess cruise, try Skywalkers during the day.

The Solarium or your balcony.

The solarium was charging $15.00 a day. Is this the average now? The balcony didn't work as they didn't have lounge chairs but more of a lawn type chair. Are the decks with the lounge chairs now gone?

Yes
I always go in to the solarium on Royal. Was just in there in March and January on the Allure. No one is at the door to collect money.
How did they charge you ?

Really? My husband and I started to walk in and a gentlemen came up to us and told us there was a charge of $15.00 per day so we left. It was perfect with the lounge chairs, a private pool, very quiet, just what I wanted so was Wondering if this is standard on all ships now?

Perhaps OP was referring to the indoor facility with heated tile beds, saunas, etc. There is a charge to use it unless your stateroom is categorized as a suite or you have a loyalty perk. It is a lovely area in which to read or relax.

It was an outdoor area, very nice and quiet. The spa was close by however indoors. I wish I could remember name of ship but I can't. When we went to sit down he came right over to inform us of charge. Was I embarassed

Princess has a quiet area that charges, but RCCL does not charge.

We are rookie cruisers (only 16 cruises) but haven't cruised in over 10 years.....sounds like things have changed and we are in for some surprises. Will have to spend more time back on Cruise Critic.

WE usually sail on Carnival and most have a "serenity deck" which is very nice, noone under 18 allowed. comfy clamshell loungers, hammocks, chaise lounge chairs, hot tubs and bar. Nice quiet adult area.

Inside we have found the Promenade deck to be quiet for reading or playing cards, also usually some quiet shady areas on the Lido deck outside.

The newer ships are so large you may not find the quiet retreat you are looking for until near the end of your cruise. A balcony room solves that problem. We have had our room steward locate chaise lounges for our balcony and remove the "lawn chairs". For a nice tip, they will graciously accommodate any reasonable request.

I have been on 28 Royal Caribbean cruises and I always go into the Solarium. Never a charge and no RC workers are ever there except gathering towels, dirty plates, etc.
I know Celebrity has the Persian Garden and there is a charge for that.

Maybe the guy charging fifteen bucks was just another passenger getting a little extra drinking money? Drinks ain't cheap on those ships.

Post was asking where to find comfortable lounge chairs to lie back, read and relax for extended period of time to read overlooking the water of course?

We love Holland America. They have smaller ships and an older clientele. Very quiet ships with many quiet areas all over the ship. We just cruised South America on the Zaandam and I read three long non fiction books. The deck chairs on the Promenade deck were perfect for quiet reading. I like being outside when reading on the ship as I like the fresh air and watching the beautiful ocean. We had no problem finding a deck chair on this cruise.

On the Vision class if you go through the exercise room there is an area with chaise lounges - only noise other than ship noise is folks talking, keep your fingers crossed a group of chatty friends haven't found the area.

you can also get to this area by steps down from Deck 10, only remember steps on port side

don't care for the solarium - prefer open area

The Viking Crown Lounge had a sign stating "Quiet Area 2 -4". Not much but it was something, although this is an inside area.

They were the low chairs made out of teak that have been on the decks of cruise ships for over 100 years. I guess in today's language you could call them lounge chairs.

Lounge chair I describe as a chair you can lie on, put your head back and feet up. Are they gone on the promenade decks?

Most Holland ships on the Vista class have many quiet areas to read/ sit with either cushy chairs, deck chairs or chaise type. The library and bow have cushy seating( warning ! people often fall asleep while reading here) The spa area has chaise lounges and can be found only if persistent in looking.Upper Veranda and promenade decks outside have quiet spots near the sports , ( basketball) area which are hardly ever used.

Are you and your husband thinking of going on the new Norwegian ship, the Escape? I have had a few casual conversations with him. If I understood him correctly, he mentioned you have done around 50 cruises

I am very prone to sea sickness and am taking my son on a cruise in December. I booked a mid ship interior room lower floor to help with the motion of the boat. Any other advice? Really could use it! Thanks...

The first couple of cruises I would be seasick by dinner of either first or second day. Then I started Dramamine the day before a cruise and that works for me.

Dramamine made me sleepy. I got those Sea Bands at the pharmacy and didn't have a problem at all for the first few days. Then I got my sea legs and could take them off. They worked really well.

Transderm Scop Patch (prescription) works best for me.

We enjoy the older ships with the wooden deck and chairs. Also the forward lounge on the Zaandam.

That's good to know because I also like to overlook the water in quiet area and read and lately have had problems finding quiet. They were lounge chairs, correct??
