View Full Version : Power outage
Thought the Villages never lost power cause all the electric wires are underground. Well, wish someone could explain how an area in Calumet Grove lost power for about one hour starting around 11:30 pm on Wednesday night. No storms...not even any rain! Did someone hit a transformer or what...very curious!

Probably a transformer; what's the old saying - "Anything man-made does have a tendency to fail occasionally".

We have lost power in Fernandana, 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years. From a blink to 4 hours. If builders hit a line, it will go out. Just because lines are underground does not mean you will not experience outings. I came from Michigan, where we had underground lines, and the power was off so often, i instaslled a whole house generator. Not so bad here. At least with underground lines, the fix is quick, unless a major area goes down. We were out in Mich. once, along with other states for a day and a half.

The villages does have an underground distribution system, however, the power for this grid comes from outside sources (Duke, Florida Power, etc.) where the lines are overhead. During a storm it is possible that a fault or lighting strike to an overhead line will cause a flicker, or momentary interruption to the TV area. If the supply to the outside substation is interrupted then the associated supply line to TV would be interrupted also.
I do not believe the TV system is a "Smart Grid" design. In the case of a "smart grid" faulted sections are automatically isolated to minimize interruptions to customers, also loads (aka customers) are automatically transferred if a source is lost.
I hope this helps, I have over 40 years experience in the utility field, designing some of the above systems.

Did you think of calling the power company for the real answer or would you rather just have opinions?

It's better to get answers from self appointed internet experts. Never bother with Google or the power co. :girlneener:
