We are relocating to The Villages and I need a new cell phone and carrier. I have a blackberry from my job now, but will lose that when I retire. I'm a pretty light user but need GPS, text and email. What carriers have good, inexpensive service in The Villages? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

If you do a search you will find a ton of posts on cell phone carriers. That said your best bet is Verizon or AT&T for the most part but it really depends on where you will be living. Just wait till you get down and check with your neighbors.

I second the above post. I personally prefer AT&T, but that is because it is the best in Leesburg. It all depends where the area is. As for phone, any smartphone will do what you need, but keep in mind: generally, Iphones are the only ones worth repairing if you crack a screen.

I use StraightTalk from Walmart with Verizon as the provider. $45/month plus tax. Love it!

You can get a pretty cheap LG smart phone for $30.

if you prefer at&t then check out cricket....much cheaper rates, owned by at&t and use at&t towers

Verizon has the best coverage............might be better pricing out there, but if you ain't got coverage...........

It definitely depends on where you live. For instance, the AT&T and T-Mobile reception in Winifred isn't the best, though it does work for the most part. That said, I did have to have the cellular carrier chip in my SimpliSafe alarm system switched from T-Mobile to Verizon in order to maintain reliable connectivity to the monitoring center. On the other hand, over in Summerhill (where we rented for several months) it was pretty much the opposite. AT&T signals were strong and Verizon were spotty.

Another vote for Cricket - owned by ATT and using their cell towers - Unlimited talk and 2.5GB LTE data for $35/mt no contract. Switched from Straight Talk to Cricket both using ATT cell towers but cricket is $10 / month cheaper. Tried T-Mobile which was worthless - cell service was awful. Heard (from our sales rep who had Verizon and 1 or 2 others) Verizon Cell service in Brownwood area is not very good? If any provider can beat $35 mt and decent service in Villages and rest of the east coast let me know.

Based on the advise and the experience of a neighbor, we just moved to Consumer Cellular and are very pleased. No contract, affordable plans, affordable phones. They use AT&T and T-Mobile towers. Be sure to specify AT&T. They have excellent customer service.

Verizon very recently announced work on the water tower at Turtle mound, and now we are getting 4-5 bars inside the house when we were getting 1-2 bars inside the house. We are located very close to the round about at Buena Vista and Pinellas place.

On a side note, I am having major problems with my ~1 year old Samsung Galaxy S5, while my wife's is fine, hoping to get it replaced today.
