Our fitness instructor found that her cart was stolen last Sat. parked by the door at Laurel Manor in the morning. They also tried to steal my friend's cart but broke the key off in the ignition. This Sat. the instructor still does not have her cart, with no leads. She has insurance but there is the deductible and depreciation.
After golf yesterday, we tried our keys in the other Yamahas that were with us and none worked, which is good. I wonder if there is a skeleton key that these scum bags use.
I guess we need to keep an eye out for any unusual behavior. The police told the instructor that it would be a good idea to take pics of our carts on all sides and the interior.

Put a hidden kill switch to stop these kinds of crooks

For as long as I can remember, there have been golf cart thefts in The Villages. When we stop after playing golf, we try to leave ours in a spot where we can keep an eye on it.

No doubt about The Club being a solid deterrent - for cars OR carts! There are also a bunch of low-cost (Under $200) GPS-type locator devices out there you could check out (Lo-Jack and others). Small add-on to a fairly major cost item like a golf cart.

I don't know if there are any statistics kept on stolen golf carts in The Villages It does happen and it pays to be diligent ----sometimes they are found.
OP, thanks for reporting this theft. I've been told that it is fairly easy to do if you know what you are doing.

Does this work on all years of carts? We have a Yamaha. And where do you buy such item. Sounds like this is a problem.

Do you mean an attachment on a golf cart that allows it to be traced?

I read somewhere that there are about 15 different key cuts for the Yahamas. I would guess that is about the same for the other brands.
Since the carts are not registered, unless street legal, they are hard to find if they go astray.
I wish that when we pay our trial fees we were given a sticker to identify our cart as paid. It could be kind of an internal registration system for The Villages. (Of course a sticker could be peeled off etc.) But some type of registration system would be a good idea.

The problem with the kill switch is that the thieves know about them, so not much of a deterrent. We just ordered "clubs" for our carts.

I ordered it off the internet. The end that goes around the brake pedal doesn't fit my pedal, so I use a heavy piece of chain around the pedal and hook the club to the chain. The complicated looking end goes through the steering wheel.

In the past there have been some instances of stolen golf carts. One was a villager's son who was taking them apart and selling the parts. One was a guy who lived in a nearby trailer park and they caught him.
I have left my cart with the key in it accidentally, always have a couple of decent golf gloves and jackets in it, often parked it with clubs untethered. Never had anything taken.
So I am assuming there is a new jerk who should get a real job who may be on the prowl. Wonder if they have cameras at Laurel Manor, I doubt it.
I was there at the same time, Helene and I take a Ceramic Class there every Saturday morning. Hope they reported it stolen right away.
THEY WILL GET HIM...or her. We have some awesome law enforcement around here.

Uber: Better take care with units like this! Ships from Hong Kong; sketchy install instructions; only works with GSM network (via SIM card) not GPS; less than raving customer reviews & videos. At $15 it might just be one of those "too good to be true", or worth it, items. To me, Lojack is the standard, so anything else needs to work at least as well as that product, via GPS, or better to get any consideration. Any package that comes in at $250 or so, or less, on an annual basis for the device plus any service costs is probably what I'll go with.

From all the locations mentioned they are using a trailer to put them on. All they need to do is take the brake off and push it onto the trailer.

The club can be easily defeated.just cut the steering wheel with a hack saw blade and its gone. Takes about 10 seconds. Better try a hidden kill switch.

Our Club Car has a 4 digit code needed to start with the key in.
Still wouldn't stop someone rolling it onto a trailer though.

There are thousands of keys for Yamaha and Club Car. Check your Yamaha key,if it is the 8000 key that's the universal one, have it changed! I am not sure about the club car number for the universal.

Being somewhat cynical, I really do not think it is necessary to buy a golg cart locking device.
If you are parked where there are many other carts and have taken your key with you, a thief just has to look at the carts and will find at least one that the owner has left the key in the cart. He will steal that cart.
Also, by playing the odds you can be mighty sure your cart will not be stolen if you take the key with you. Out of all the carts, it is a very slim chance yours will be one of the very, very few taken by a thief.
Yes, a cart may be taken once in a great while but The Villages is probably the very safest place and most crime free place you can find.
Of course, wherever you live, take normal precautions regarding personal and property safety.

I guess if you see a cart being loaded on a truck you should try and get the license plate number, take a picture and call 911. Have to make the Villages an unfriendly place for golf cart thefts.
Wouldn't there be surveillance video at the squares and all the gates? Maybe some volunteers could review all the tapes and pass on questionable activity to the sheriff.

Has anyone though about a security system like on a car.
We have both of are carts with them on it, including a start kill systems that will not let them go anywhere when armed.
Also you can have shock sensors put on them so if someone sits on it or hits the cart the alarm will go off.
Just some FYI
