Golf in The Villages

I have been asked by new friends in The Villages to bring my golf clubs out of retirement. (have not swung a club in 13 years) Is it mandatory to wear softspikes on the executive courses? If so, I am going to need to order some new size 16's! I was never very good at golf, so if I tee off in The Villages, please keep your pets and children inside on those days. It could be ugly!

I often see people wearing trainers on the golf courses. Get your clubs out of retirement and have some fun, all levels of golfers play here, I have only been playing for 3 months so you can't be any worse than me.

I think that metal spikes are banned on almost every golf course in the world these days.

if you're not that serious a golf, just play in sneakers. You'll be fine.

Thanks. I will just start out wearing my regular sneakers. I use to play quite a bit of golf with my customers. We were competitive. I have been known to throw clubs and use some profanity. But, I was working then. I have started a new life in The Villages, and have found no reason to be angry. I have not always been the fun, bubbly personality that my new Villager friends have met. (especially on a basketball court) I have retired from basketball and will never play again!

Just play and enjoy the game and the company! Sneakers work very well!

JUST DO IT. Same story here - moved to TV a bit over 1 year ago. We finally ran out of excuses to NOT play. Been about 15 years for both of us. Had been to the driving range a couple times during those years but not actual golf.

Decided to take Refresher lessons at Sarasota a couple weeks ago - 3 1 1/2hr course with group of 6. SO worth it! Then went to the range and putting/chipping practice areas a few times. Then yesterday to Turtle Mound Exec course with neighbors. Man, what fun! A gorgeous day and the course was beautiful -rated a 1, but c'mom - lots of traps and water. A GREAT time - and no swearing, yelling, or bent-up clubs. We bought the annual cart pass, so we are committed.... We plan to golf at least twice weekly.
Take advantage of what TV has to offer while you can! Gotta love life here in the Bubble...

Why not just put some soft spikes on your old golf shoes?

The replacement is easy with a golf cleat replacement tool. Will take about 15 minutes.

I'd advise taking your shoes to the golf shop. Most shoes use a standard size thread, but some (I think FootJoy) take a smaller thread. The golf shop will know which ones you need.

Hook a few off the tee on hole #5 at El Santiago. I need a few extra golf balls. We have learned that golfers should NEVER go into yards to retrieve thier errant shots. Bridgestone E6s are preferred! :angel:

I stopped playing in 1969 when I joined the Army, I had played for about 7 years before that. In 2009 after 40 years I started playing again. It was sort of like riding a bike, the muscle memory was still there. I shoot in the 80's most of the time, have broken 80 about 6 or 7 times from the blue tees. Presently I haven't played since Christmas, between winter rates and playing lousy I took a little time off. Now that it's only $20 I'll be back out there soon.

I would encourage you (and everyone else) to attend the good golf school. It is hosted by the Golf Administration . They will tell you useful things like:
What the stakes mean; where is the proper place to park by the green (to reduce wear and tear on greens); why you should fix your pitch marks; what is ready golf; golf courtesy etc. This two hour course will make your and the rest of the community's day more pleasant.

Your new golf partners will appreciate it and it will make your transition easier!

sounds like you are committed! Good for you! P. said she had fun too. What a great activity to "re-learn" together. I also plan to take lessons in June. Gotta get the graduation/wedding trips out of the way first....then, no more excuses!! But I will be light years behind my hubby, as you know!!! Oh well, gotta start somewhere!!
