If you like a "dry rub" this might appeal to you. We've been there twice, but prefer
Oak Wood because of the sauces.

Bar-B-Que joints should be illegal if they are not in Texas, Memphis, or St Louis. No, I did not overlook the Carolinas.

But you did overlook the #1 BBQ city in all the land. I don't make up the facts. I just report them.

Sunny - I think we can call out #1 on the list in a heartbeat - Memphis.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Kansas Citians know that the city has some of the best barbecue in the country, but a new list is helping to back that up.

The Daily Meal has created a list of the 35 best barbecue places in America and Kansas City landed four of the top 10 spots.

Per this article Memphis is #1:

Austin comes in 1st in some surveys, and Lexington in another.

Living in the South, I have eaten a LOT of BBQ in my lifetime (at least once and sometimes twice a week) - from hole in the walls to the major chains - Sonny's at LSL has some of the best pulled pork and ribs I've ever eaten; I'm eager to try Oakwood when I get there full time next week.

And as a true BBQ connoisseur, a pulled pork sandwich ain't nothing unless you pile slaw on it. :mmmm:

Thanks for the responses. I have eaten Bar-B-Que in Memphis, the Carolinas, and many other places, but must say that some of the best is at a place called Ridgewood Bar-B-Que in Bluff City, Tennessee. This place is about 10 miles from Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. If you are ever close, give it a try.

Amen. About time you were on your way. Welcome.

I am getting so pumped about being there FT and I know my wife is ready to get back. I played golf for the last time here Monday after work and had to throw on a sweatshirt and a toboggan because it was so :cold:. I am so looking forward to the sunshine, the warmth and "Florida's Friendliest Retirement Hometown".

We really like Burke's. If you are looking for fancy, it isn't. It is a nice, family run business with good food and pleasant staff. It isn't as good as the places in Memphis, but still very good. If you like gloppy sauce, you probably won't like Burke's.

Thanksgiving and Christmas meals should be served on your finest dishes (in our case that means our restaurant quality melamine). Anything cooked on a grill should be served on paper plates. If you have company and want to be fancy-smancy, you use the plastic paper plate holders. I don't like plastic flatware. We use our stainless.

Considering 1) That we've never had a bad meal at Oakwood, 2) It's reasonable, fast, and always hot and good and 2) since Oakwood is now getting national attention, with only 5 locations (and all within an hour drive of TV), it definitely gets our vote. While sauce does not make a smokehouse, sauce does not disqualify a smokehouse, either -- and Oakwood is a great smokehouse!

We prefer Oakwood... their ribs are always great!

We haven't eaten their barbecue yet but the breakfast is great! If you clip the Monday coupon you get free coffee, and their breakfast is only $2.99. You get two eggs, meat, and bread. We split an order of hash browns too.

Burkes got off to a rough start. Use the "search engine" ----couple of previous threads. They have a great location but I don't care for their ribs---pulled pork just okay.

Southern Illinois has great BQ and the best pulled pork sandwiches with chow on them. Pulley's Marion, IL. If you are there sometime for a great Sandwich.

Wouldn't this be quite a drive to get BBQ?

the food is served cafeteria style, the choices are limited. for the most part good, but can be 'inconsistent' from one time to next. it is worth a try to see what you think.

Heard it's not good. Friends went and said it was terrible. Better options around, like Sonny's..

I personally do not care for Sonny's at all. The chain was lousy in Utah and it is lousy here.

Oakwood is very good, in our opinion. Burke's was pretty good the one time we went there. It is always crowded with construction workers at lunch. That is a pretty good sign. The locals know where to go.

The best BBQ we have ever had is "12 Bones" in Asheville, NC. They only serve lunch and the line forms about 45 minutes before they open. Never disappoints!!

Anyone who thinks Burke's, Sonny's or Woody's is good eating surely needs to re-evaluate. Oakwood is way out in front.

We tried Oakwood once, a couple of years ago. The portions were small and the ribs were nothing special. (in my humble opinion) Not worth waiting in line for. We are not tempted to try again.

Dotti: I don't think the Sonny's you had in Utah was related the chain that operates in the Southeast (MS, AL, GA, LA, KY, FL, NC, SC). We used to go to a Sonny's in MD, but it was just a local joiint, not part of the chain.

The Utah chain has the same menu, same sign, logos etc. I feel certain it is the exact chain. When I saw it in LSL, I had a involuntary "eye roll". "not here, Please not here!" We just never go. Thank goodness we haven't had social events planned there.

I just looked at the chain online and it does just show the southern locations. I wonder if they are franchised and and are done individually. that might explain it!

no Sonny's west of La. or north of Kentucky. Strictly in the South (Florida born and based chain)
