Tear stains on Maltese

My Maltese has tear stains and I am not having any luck getting rid of them. Our last dog was a white Poodle and we used Angel Eyes on him and it cured him in about a month. Since then Angel Eyes has changed their formula due to an antibiotic that was used. The new Angel Eyes just doesn't work, we have been using it for about 2 months now. I know there are lots of Maltese in the area, just wondering what everybody uses to keep their eyes white.

I learned from Lisa, the groomer at Pet Villas, that the vet there recommends using cultured Buttermilk powder which I found on Amazon. I give our Maltese/Yorkie about 1/4 tsp in her meals and it has helped a lot. I think it balances the PH which makes the tearing less likely to oxidize and turn brown. Maybe it kills the bacteria, but she still tears a bit. At any rate it is a better, more natural solution and works for me and Tikki.

The problem with the original Angel Eyes was that it contained an antibiotic and there are those of us who are concerned about continual use of that. Apparently the company has reformulated it without the antibiotic, but there seems to be some evidence that it is not as effective as the original. Bathing the eyes every day morning and night may help to keep the tearing from oxidizing, but I can't vouch for that as I don't remember to do that continually. Therefore for me the Cultured Buttermilk Powder seems to keep it fairly at bay although I do have to keep watch and not let it get too out of hand. I also am not overly particular (much like my efforts at keeping the house dust free!) so I may not be the best judge of what state of whiteness works for you. I just do my best to not let her look neglected!

I give my dogs probiotic capsules in their breakfast and have had good luck. Some people suggest only giving the dog distilled water, as they feel the minerals in the water contribute to tear stains. Good luck!

I have a 4 month old Shih Tzu puppy. So cute. I haven't had to try this yet but the breeder recommended adding 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to water for tear stains. She said it balances the PH levels.
