It is my belief that eating a plant based diet is not as good for you as eating mostly fruits and vegetables along with small portions of meat or fish or poultry and eating dairy products. grains and other carbohydrates moderately.

This article has some interesting points;

Yes, Gracie. And twigs and things like torpedo grass don't do justice to oil (olive, of course) and vinegar, either.

That's an interesting article but I'm surprised no one has questioned it. For the time being let's just take the second paragraph and see if there is truth in it.

It states that, "The human brain likely would never have evolved into it's current form without the ingestion of meat." Maybe that's true and maybe not, there's no way we will ever know for sure. The big question is this: Now that our brain has evolved into its current form, what does meat have to maintain it that plants don't? In other words, what nutrients are unique to meat that plants don't have? Nothing that I know of except B12 and we can get that from a supplement.

A recent article concerning the debilitating health of Burt Reynolds speaks to his abuses. However the article also offered advice for seniors. One of those suggestions was to maintain a nutritious diet.

I can't speak for anyone else but as a senior citizen in relatively good health I doubt a radical change in my diet would help. A second suggestion was moderate exercise.

A steak with side of pasta, a red wine and gelato for dessert:clap2:

Why are you such a doubting Thomas?
When someone (not you) mentions a source of information and a quote, you go on to diss it. Whatever it is, you have a retort and have problem with the post.

And just for the record, a supplement (tablet or powder) will never give you the results of getting B12 from meat -- a real source!

After I posted the above message I had some thoughts as to why the human brain evolved into its current form. I believe it's because nature selected for intelligence. Those who had the best survival skills survived because they were smarter, and those who had the least perished. So after tens of thousands of years (or hundreds of thousands of years) of consistently weeding out the least smart humans, the final result is human intelligence as we know it today.

Meat was very helpful back in the ice age so that humans could survive to evolve. When food was scarce, the best idea was to eat anything (edible) that you could get your hands on. Back then there were no supermarkets for them to pick and choose the healthiest foods for longevity. Now we have this bigger and better brain, plus supermarkets, so we can now select nutrients for exceptionally greater longevity. You might say we have reached a new phase of human evolution.

Some of us want to enjoy the taste of excellent food and wine.
And the pleasure we get from eating a good meal with our friends.
And there is not one thing wrong with that!
This doesn't preclude a healthy meal --- everything in moderation.
Not all of us want to eat SOLELY for longevity.

Well, what was the point of this thread? Wasn't it to start a discussion? If not, what was it supposed to be?

And just for the record, a supplement (tablet or powder) will never give you the results of getting B12 from meat -- a real source!

I've been supplementing with B12 for almost 10 years with no problem. Where's your proof that B12 is not as good from a supplement, or is that just your opinion?

Not a fan of grilled soy product either.:ohdear:

I'm not a fan of soy products either and haven't had any for over ten years. A large well-done study of men showed that long term usage caused brain atrophy.

Some of us want to be healthy while at the same time enjoying healthy food with friends. And the enjoyment is so great that we want to live longer so as to enjoy these things for a longer period of time. And there's nothing wrong with that. Not all of us want to eat solely for taste.

So glad you prefaced that with the fact you haven't had any.

Thursday two women friends who are villagers came to visit me and the talk came to recipe's and cooking. One is the mother of the other and the older woman still makes home made pie crusts for the fruit pies she makes weekly. She has a kitchen garden and brought some starts for my herb garden. Last year she had enough green beans to can them. She likes to cook them with ham for a long time...like I love them.. an Ohio thing.

She makes great cookies and brownies too.

She moves about easily, enjoys good health, and has a lively intelligence. She checks her finances daily on the computer. She is 102.
