My grandchildren have all been born in the digital age, the oldest is 21 and the youngest is 13. I have corresponded with all of them via email and social media but have never sent them a handwritten letter. Today, I decided to sit down and write each one a letter telling them what they mean to me. I hope that I can effectively convey my feelings and that they will treasure the letters. It will likely be the first and may be the only personal letter they ever receive. As my grandson said when his mom told him to get ready for his second day of kindergarten, "I miss the good old days."

My grandson is only 15 months old, and I have written letters and saved them after each visit or Skype session telling him what I thought and what joy he has brought me. On his first birthday, all guests were asked to write a letter which was then collected and put into a "time capsule" for him to open on his 18th birthday. I am sure your letter will be cherished by your grandchildren!

I hope you printed the letter since this younger generation hasn't been taught long hand and probably couldn't read it. My youngest son is 33 and has a masters degree and told me he can read very little longhand or cursive writing.

Once or twice a year I write a letter to my wife and put it in my sock drawer with all the others. I have them covered up and taped to the bottom sonshe won't find them. I read a story once about a man wanted to make sure his wife realised how much she meant to him after he was gone. I am hoping the the same thing.

In 1978 and again in 1981 my father wrote letters to our children on the day they were born. When their children were born, we handed them the letters written by their grandfather who had long passed. They treasure those notes and I am sure your grandchildren will too.
What a great idea. We should all sit down and write a letter to those we love and see often or not often enough. It's a lost art.
