We will be moving to TV with our 5 lb Shorkie over the summer. Is there somewhere I can check out the rules for pets before we get there?
Thanks. Leslie

A copy of the restrictions should be in your closing papers. Each district is a little different.

Please please please have your dog on a leash even if he/she doesn't "need" it. I almost hit a big dog with my cart because he wasn't on a leash and came running out of the garage. After I stood my cart on end to stop (it is a slow gas cart but I was going the full 18 mph), the owners stared at me like I was wrong. All I could do not to run over the owners.

I always slow down when approaching animals and children.

I do as well, but this dog was in the garage so I had no warning. I hit a squirrel almost 50 years ago and I'm not over it yet. I would have to be hospitalized if I hit a cat/dog/child.

OP is asking for information, not opinions.

:welcome: This is an exciting time for you.
You will find that most people in The Villages love dogs.
Of course you will need to walk your dog on a leash, pick up after him and make sure you don't let him use anyone's lawn for a bathroom.
There are three small Village provided dog parks.
Plus there is a wonderful private ten-acre dog park on CR 101 called Doggie Doo Run Run.
If you want directions there, please PM me.
There is a search button above, you can search by subject on any topic.
Or if you have questions, please feel free to ask them on TOTV.

Curb your dog. Do not allow it to go on people's expensive landscaping. Better yet train your dog to go on YOUR property and NOT MINE! Let the arrows fly. I'm ready.
Lesdavenator asked in a very pleasant and respectful way about rules for pets with regard to their 5 lb Shorkie.
They have done everything right and nothing wrong.
Most people in The Villages love dogs .
As an owner of two dogs, I find that it's hard to go for a walk without a few people asking if they can pat my dogs.
Let's welcome Lesdavenator to The Villages and show a little of Florida's Friendliest Hometown, instead of responding in a hostile way.

Be careful with those retractable dog leashes and golf carts. There have been several tragic accidents like this that I know of in this area. If you are adept at using this kind of leash then you should be OK. But a slip up and the dog could get hit.
I second Barefoot's recommendation of Doggie Doo Run Run. They do not allow dogs that are aggressive though or over protective of their masters. There have been a few problems like this too at DDRR. You just have to observe how the dogs interact with other dogs as well as with people.
I run across dogs that seem bad with other dogs on walks but the owners have always known to keep their dog away from other dogs if it is a dog with some kind of social problem.
Also for dogs on Squares. Some dogs do really well with all the commotion, others not well at all. Take a test run at a time when the Squares are not so busy to see how your dog handles the noise, people, kids, golf carts, cars, etc. on the Squares. A short leash is also a very good idea too on the Squares.

Also be careful of how the dog is secured in the golf cart. I see many dogs just sitting in the passenger seat and some with a leash around the neck. Dogs in carts always make me smile, but this cuteness could have a bad ending.

This drives me crazy............do they put their grandchild next to them without restrains??

Village Joyce makes a good point.
Please make sure your dog has a harness when he is in your golf cart, not a collar, and that he is fastened in with a short leash.
One abrupt stop with a collar and he could strangle.
If he suddenly feels like chasing a squirrel across a busy road, the harness will secure him.
Some people buy a stroller for their small dog so they can take him to the Town Square with no danger of getting stepped on.
There are a few pet-friendly patios where you can take your dog.
Square One Burgers even offers a pet menu for your Shorkie!

That's a great suggestion. I always tie Beau in by doubling up the 5 foot leash and wrapping it around one of the roof supports. You do have to make sure that you take corners slowly. Beau also climbs on my lap so I have to drive usually one-handed so I go around corners quite slow. There are a lot of golf cart drivers in a real hurry for some reason but they can pass if I am too slow when I have Beau on my lap. Beau is a 11 pound chihuahua/terrier mix.
I do also have to avoid some pooches he has a problem with for some unknown reason. There are some dogs that just annoy him for some strange reason. He is a rescue so we do not know the elements that brought about his often strange personality. Other dogs might have the same problems as there are a lot of rescues in the Villages with gaps in their known histories.

I wonder is the OP is asking about rules established by TV, ie: Restrictive Covenants............which are different through out TV. For example, size, quantity, etc.
Sorry Don, did not see your post.

I think you are correct. On the plus side, lots of good information was provided. My dad was a engineer. He couldn't give a yes or no answer. He explained everything from...in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. I miss him.

I think the OP was asking for just what they got -- a pleasant and friendly exchange of dog info and ideas.
And also a warm welcome to TV!
As far as restrictive covenants, I believe most Villages allow two dogs with no size restrictions.
And of course no fences, unless they are invisible.

Your dad must have known our younger son, who starts every story with getting up in the morning and tying his shoes!

They need to establish a Village for "Dog Lovers Only." I would most certainly purchase a house there. [emoji190]

I would also, but I'm thinking it might be easier if the village is for non pet owners.

Please don't group all pet owners together. Most are responsible.
A few bad apples give the rest of us a bad name.
I agree that negligent and disrespectful pet owners need a kick in the butt.

BF............I was surprised in my sister's Village (South of 466a) she has a dog size restriction. She has two large dogs (moved in with them) and can keep them. BUT, as they die.............she can not replace them with the same because of their size.

I have heard of only one dog being allowed in some of the older Villages.
Warren Kiefer said he has that restriction in his Village.
But this is the first time I've heard of a size restriction. Wow.
Is the restriction on size identified by a weight restriction, e.g., dogs over 40 lbs not allowed - that type of restriction?

Seems like it was LBS. I will ask sis to dig out her info. Might cost me a couple doggie treats.

I think the problem is that the zealous dog lovers here are as zealous as the vegans.
Lots of similarities there, in refusing to hear that there could possibly be another side to the story.
I don't think many are refusing to hear or agree with responsible pet ownership. Maybe we're just all tired of being lumped into the same category and being preached to as we are by some in the health category.
How does anybody know what kind of dog owner the OP is? Why the nasty comment? OP was trying to do the right thing. The nasty commenter was out of line.

How on earth does a simple respectful request for information by Lesdavenator turn into criticism of "zealous dog lovers". :sigh:

First, Welcome to the villages.:a040::a040::a040::a040:
Second, we have cats, surrounded by people with dogs, NO problem!! I often see them walking their dogs, and often stop and talk to them and pet the dogs (if the dog allows), and all of these people have been very carefully about picking up poop. So we coexist very well, I think that this is all that is required, covenants as mentioned before typically limit you to 2 pets.
You will find lots of other dog lovers, and will typically find several other s walking their dogs in the neighborhoods, it is remarkable that most of the dogs I have observed are very well behaved with both humans and other dogs.
Hope you and pooch enjoy your new life in TV.:welcome:
