Volunteering in TV

Volunteering in TV ........ (I'm too lazy to do a search right now).

Are there any TOTVers who actually do volunteer work in TV ? Or does anyone know of any opportunities for volunteer participation ?

Having been retired for 10 years, I have no desire to enter the work force again but giving service to the community is something I could offer. It would be interesting to know what is available in TV.

There is a long list of volunteer groups in the Daily Sun at least once a week. I just signed up to volunteer at the new doggy park (there was a sign on the gate asking for volunteers and I felt I had to go for it!). The churches also have various volunteer positions. It is one of the nicer things about TV -- almost everyone is involved in some way with some group that either gives money, time or effort to others.

This is a critical election year - choose your candidate wisely and get involved! Volunteers are always needed and appreciated!

I was a volunteer with Hospice for many years up north; wonderful, satisfying work, though I can't do it now because we're part-time at TV and up north, and you really need to be available continuously. Have done lots of volunteer stuff with libraries up north and that's certainly possible in TV; we plan to do that when we get there for the winter in November. Had also made connection with a member of the Optimist Club (a national organization) and want to find out more about it when we get to TV later in the year. I'm sure there are lots more opportunities....

I know from my interview at the hospital (TVRH) that they have over 550 volunteers in their auxiliary. They even have volunteers who play the grand piano in the lobby!

Volunteer work is a wonderful alternative to employment if you feel the need to keep busy. Volunteer work is extremely rewarding no matter what the field you volunteer in and it is usually flexible hours too.

Some of us have a hard time just sitting and relaxing after retirement (not me!) ;)

There are so many varied fields of volunteering and you can practically pick your interest.

There are hundreds of organizations. I volunteer for Operation Shoebox which sends over 500 packages of goodies and personally written letters to troops deployed overseas each week. We support the troops and pray for them. There is Operation Homebound which makes and delivers meals to those who can't get out of their homes. There are pantries which stock food for the poor families in the area. The various churches have either pantry's or food kitchens. St. Vincent de Paul collects gently used articles the last Thursday of each month in the parking lot of St. Timothy Church over on 441/27. You can volunteer at the Villages Hospital. You can volunteer all over the community. Once a week the Daily Sun lists the organizations looking for volunteers along with their telephone numbers.

Personally, I love the work I do with Operation Shoebox. I write letters to the military. Right now we are writing Christmas Cards and getting ready to ship out 35,000 Christmas stockings over the holidays.
