Bikes and Carts

Bicycles can run on the street no problem they dont stop at stop signs and they run with 1 to 20 in a group taking over the road. OK so they have done that for ever. So why cant carts yes I know that would really be a mess but at least they have signals and they do, for the most part obey traffic laws. Bikes not so much and they mostly appear to think they own the road. Just my opinion and yes we all have one.

Probably because the "rules" for bicycles came along far before those of carts. Technically you're right, since they are less safe and slower, but it's a matter for lawmakers to address. They can't keep up in most cases with carts, req them to be passed.

What traffic laws are you referring to? I see golf carts and cars violate traffic laws routinely; running stop signs, speeding, passing on a solid line, failing to use turn signals, failing to come to a complete stop when turning right on a red, failing to yield to traffic in the roundabouts, failure to provide at least 3 feet of clearance with a bike, etc.

Exactly, and my free thought expressions is , I dislike constant complaint about bicycles on the road. Share the Road, it's the law.

However if anyone doubts the accuracy of the posters issue with cyclists, just go out and plant yourself at any intersection where cyclists frequent some morning and watch and observe. For some unknown reason, many seem to think the laws do not apply when on a bicycle. I know it's not all and some follow the rules, but it is far and away a much higher % of cyclist fail to follow the rules than golf carts fail to follow their rules. I wish it could be explained, other than saying "I have to because unless I do it's not safe" That is a crock of you know what.

If everyone, both cars, cycles and carts followed the rules this would be a much safer place for all.

I just got back from a 21 mile bike ride. It was wonderful! I had no problem with any vehicle, be it a truck, car, or golf cart. There were other bicyclists and walkers out enjoying the morning as well. We all were courteous to one another. I waved a golf cart past me as I approached a divided cart lane section as I didn't want to hold him up. He gave me a big wave as he went by. There is no reason to have any problems out there. Just try to be courteous and share the road.

I agree. How often are you really held up for any length of time by cyclist? Why can't we all slow down and allow all of our neighbors enjoy their sport of choice?

Maybe its time the bikes self limit themselves to say 5 in a group. Also think it is time to some how restrict the speed of golf carts maybe certify the carts. dplars - I don't believe you have ever observed the gaggle of bicycle riders called a club who occasionally tour the historic neighborhoods en masse. Not one of them 'rolls through a stop sign' or goes '5mph' at any time other than when coming to a stop in a pool parking lot! From the vantage point on my lanai I observe them ride 2/3/4/ abreast down the street and then turn left - without stopping at the stop sign - as a swarm of humanity. They demonstrate no concept of avoiding a challenge with a car or a cart; nor do they demonstrate concern for same.

Or a bicyclist hit a golf cart and the impact threw the cart driver out of his vehicle? Or how about a bicyclist in The Villages that ran a stop sign and clipped a passing car causing extensive body damage to the car. All the bicyclists were perfectly unharmed. No, of course, that never happened.

Let's face it, it is the bicyclists who are at greatest danger. Please just let us old duffers enjoy our exercising. This is a retirement community. We are supposed to be mellow and enjoying life. I, personally, am not against any group of Villagers. I believe in Live and Let Live.

That's because most of the lanes in TV are legally (under 14 feet wide) substandard. In such cases it is not possible to share the lane legally or safely with a motor vehicle. In such cases it is permissible for a biker to take the lane.

But you are discussing someones opinion, and they made that point from the get go, I cycle everyday to and from work, and anytime possible, No since in arguing this point, we are wrong so why bother. Who care that every other moving vehicle out there violates the law as much if not more than anyone else, but it is the cyclist who are at fault.
Parr Drive is 25mph, I was riding home from work,, computer said I was doing 30.5mph,, I use that road to get a good sprint from Buena Vista to Belvedere. Ole Man passed me like I was setting still, then yelled at me when I caught up to him at the stop sign, and told me I had no business on the road. That should tell you something about the mentality around here, I told him he should move to a retirement community when he could do what he wanted to do,, Oh Snap he is in one...

You get the picture I am painting here.

I have read so many post on the cyclist deal being on the roads,,, we can not argue it,, Just read on to the next post skip anyone referring to cyclist. HEHEHEHE

We cyclist are wrong for even thinking about cycling on the roads, Multi Modal Paths, Cart Paths, Neighborhood streets, Dirt trails and so on.

There is a flip side to cyclists rights. That is that they have the same responsibilities that motor vehicle operators have to ride legally and safely. There are times when each type of road user fails to meet that responsibility. The risk of death or serious injury is far greater to the cyclist than to a motorist.

They do not like it. Remember if they need to pass you they can do it on blind curves if they have to as they can always cut back in if another cart appears from the opposite direction.
