Looking for french door frig advice

We are researching french door refrigerators with water/ice in the door. The internet reviews are all over the place, from extreme love to extreme hate.

Leaning toward an LG, around 27-29 cu. ft.

We have simple needs. Moderate ice capacity is fine, as well as standard shelf arrangement. Want it to be quiet and reliable.

Real-life experiences would be appreciated.

We are looking for one now too but can't be higher than 68 1/2 which is difficult to find. Don't want freezer at bottom as had for 7 yrs and now do not like any longer

We have a 4 door French door frig - Samsung. I wanted the 4 door and was leaning toward LG but discovered the small drawer was also a freezer and I wanted it to be a refrigerator, not a freezer, thus the Samsung choice. LOVE IT! Yes, it was too tall for our upper cabinet, but we had the cabinet raised to accommodate it.

Our Samsung french door with ice and water in the door worked well for about a year and a half. Then water started running out first when dispensing ice. The service tech told us that this is a common problem and even if we replaced the ice maker it would happen again. Seems this happens because of the warmer temperature in the refrigerator where the ice maker is located. We're now dumping our ice and using it out of the freezer. Also, the ice maker takes up a lot of valuable space in the refrigerator. Other than that I like it more than I was expecting. I thought the freezer would be inconvenient always having to bend down but because we have an interior drawer there's no problem finding and retrieving from it.

We bought our LG fridge from Home Depot at a Thanksgiving sale and are very happy with it. It is very quiet and has been no problem. We have bought another LG French Door fridge for our daughter. The new fridge has an easier way to exchange filters. We purchased the Home Depot warranty. The only issue, which I imagine will be common to any make, is that when the ice cubes melt, there are tiny white specks which are supposedly the hard water deposits. Apparently the ice water supply is filtered but not the water for making the ice - odd! Anyone else have this problem, and any easy solution?

We added an inline filter in the supply line under the sink where it connects to the house water for the sink. No problem with specks.

We had a Samsung french door fridge for four years at our last home before moving here less than a year ago. We had two issues.

(1) The guts of the ice maker in the freezer were not protected by a housing and was damaged by freezer contents that shifted when the drawer was closed; it was very expensive and difficult to repair.

(2) It was very easy to "close" the doors only to hear the beeping/warning sound (indicating the doors were ajar) that didn't sound until a minute after movement stopped ... this happened very frequently.

I'd never have another one again and would not recommend a french door fridge.

We bought an LG in 2007 with ice maker in the door. It took up a lot of space. The refrigerator broke four times by 2013 when we moved. I have heard that the LG ice makers now do not take up as much refrigerator space as they used to.

When we moved here, we got rid of the side-by-side that came with the house for a Whirlpool Gold french door without ice maker in the door. It has broken once with a "usual" minor problem that they fixed supposedly forever by jury-rigging something. (It was leaking water out of the left front side.) Also, you have to be very sure you close the freezer door firmly and squarely, or you will get frost in the freezer.

Despite the problems, I really like having the freezer on the bottom and the wider shelves up top. I don't like spending so much money on a fridge, but we use it so much, and we cursed our side-by-side every single day for years. Could never find anything in the fridge side, and the freezer side wouldn't even hold a pizza box.

Had a Kenmore side-by-side that would hold a pizza box. Had a special slot for it standing the box on its side. Loved that feature. But this refrigerator was so noisy and the cheap plastic parts (shelves and drawer handles) broke. Don't think I would buy a Kenmore refrigerator again. Have heard several people complain about LG refrigerators.

Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know that about the slot. Aside from pizzas, there are many times I just need to put a pan of something in the freezer to freeze and then transfer to freezer bags, etc. It can be worked around, but I found it inconvenient. Plus it seemed like on the fridge side, stuff got pushed to the back and was difficult to locate.

But everyone's needs are different.

I also agree that with the side-by-side things seem to get lost in the back of the refrigerator. Would love to have one appliance that is all refrigerator and one that was all upright freezer. Of course, I don't have room for that. But it would be nice.

Wow. Learning a lot from these posts! Keep them coming since we are in market also for one! Now I have freezer on bottom and find I don't use foods at bottom so this is interesting. Lots of negative experiences. Let's hear the good ones. Not sure what brand to shop for now?

We had a ridiculously expensive GE Performance Profile with every bell and whistle. It died, fully loaded, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We quickly bought a stainless LG French Door Model LXF 25791. It's been a few years. Still working perfectly. Water/ice on the door. Plenty of room for cookie sheets and party trays.

Bought a Samsung French door with dual ice makers. Works great! Lots of freezer space. Bought the extended warranty haven't had to use it or the original warranty yet! I only wish it were a little more on the quiet side. Wife loves it!

So, do the LG owners out there like the cubes that the frig makes?

Our son works for Sears and a told us a french door refrigerator with the ice maker in the door has the most service calls. Constant problems.

Not looking for a fridge, our whirlpool has been a work horse up north for 13 years. But have to ask. I hate the smell and taste of our water in TV, so water in the door would be out for us.

I have an LG Door in a door model and love it. I keep the things I use every day there, like Crystal Light, coffee creamer, soda, mayo, mustard, ketchup, yada yada I find I do not have to open the main fridge but once a day. I also keep the things I use frequently in the right side of the main fridge, so when I do open the major unit, I am only opening a small area. This is where I keep some lunchmeat, milk, lettuce. Had one problem with it, and had to fight with LG to fix it. I called Broward Factory Service and they fixed it immediately. So much for LG service!

Ice cubes are fine but the storage capacity is rather small. Plan ahead before a party and dump them in the freezer storage area.

Our LG made three different sizes of ice cubes (this was 2007). Ice cubes were fine (semi-circular), but the ice maker broke. And storage capacity was minimal.

Personally, I really like the smaller cubes. Just a matter of preference. When I have a party I bag up ice ahead of time and put it in the bin or just buy a bag.
