Houses made aging friendly.

I noticed in our new home in Hadley that the toilets are higher than in most homes.
Is there anything else that makes them friendly to an older population?

I can think of grab bars in the shower and bathtub. Are the doorways wide enough for a wheel chair? Maybe the Lantana?

Gracie, I wish they had installed more safety bars in the baths. My large tub is tricky to get in and out of and I'm not really old yet. We are going to have them installed in all the bathrooms.

They are called " comfort height" commodes. Funny thing is once you get used to them the standard height makes you feel like you have fallen down. In any event, they are an option that I love.

Graciegirl, now that I am up off the floor and have dried the tears running down my face... (haven't laughed that hard in a long time), I know what you mean about a back problem and I'm tall. I love the elevated perch. We have installed them in our last two homes here in the Midwest and grab bars are probably pretty easily installed too. The biggest issue with accessible/handicap homes are steps for entrances and hallways/doorways. Unfortunately, I have a brain injured nephew in a wheelchair and my sister always advises people building homes to plan for the handicap features. It's easier at the building point and saves one from having to move if s*** happens.

I replaced a toilet in my old house and bought the "comfort height" by mistake. We had 3 thrones in that house. One started running, and instead of fixing it, I replaced it with a comfort height. Then the 3rd seat! The house in TV has them. My little condo in NY had regular height, and I needed help getting up (well, not really, but it did seem like a drop!), and I replaced them before moving in.

They are really a nice little addition for this aging body, that's for sure.

Gracie Girl--I love this forum!!! I have a sister- in- law whose husband installed one of these "thrones" in their new house. (I had never heard of such a thing). She did not like it at first---said that after 50 some-odd years your brain is automatically set to "descend" a certain distance. She said that it takes a while to get used to being stopped "abruptly!" If you are really petite, do you need a step stool???

When we built our last house here in NE Ark we had the bathroom counters set higher, the commode, and the dishwasher is elevated off the floor. These changes make it a lot easier on your back. Our walk in showers have built in seats and hand sprayers beside the shower head. We also have wider doors, more pocket doors and the handles that you push down instead of turning. My washer and dryer are front loaders that have the pedestal also to make it easier on your back. Since I am short my kitchen has a lot of large drawers and not as many upper cupboards. I was lucky to put in a small walk in pantry too. I am sure there is more out there that can be done but those were some small changes we made while building.

How bored am I today? Or how much into approach/avoidance with what I really should be doing?

But you know, this whole toilet height thing is quite simply all about marketing.

I just love the age friendly thing really! Im for anything that makes life a little easier on the old bod but I have a hyper active physical fitness freak for a husband. he believes in making everything as hard as possible so that I can stay physically fit!!!If he had his way we would have a hole in the floor of the bathroom for a toilet >:( so that I would have to work harder to get up and down.

He watches me go up the steps of our old farmhouse(they are steep and narrow) on my hands and knees and sees me slide down them on my butt and says ,"thats good for you"!"" It will keep you in better shape!" He parks the car at least 4 miles from the door when we go shopping so that we have to walk further. Someone please Help! I am truly at my witts end! >:( :dontknow:

When my wife and I did our lifestyle preview visit last month we noticed that the houses in TV actually have a lot of features that are aging friendly. For example, they use levers for door handles instead of the round door knobs that most houses use. The levers are a lot easier to use when you have arthritis. My wife is disabled and noticed that the regular showers have a low step over height making them easier to get into. Also, they offer the Roman showers with seats in them as options on houses. Like most houses in Florida, the houses are all on one floor unlike the current raised ranch that my wife and I have.

I'd love that cuz I have bad knees and the high throne REALLY makes it easier to do business! In fact, in my old Miami home, when the tank cracked, I replaced the whole thing with the new higher model. Then when I finally sold the house, the young fella who bought it thought that was cool!

One of the things I love about my Oregon Dream Home is that all the custom tiled counters in the kitchen and both bathrooms are several inches higher than normal. I noticed it immediately and it it so much easier on an old back to not have to stoop over the kitchen counters or in the bathroom.

In fact, IF I decide to have a TV home custom built......... I would insist on the high throne and the high counters ;D

I guess we never forget our roots - they are part of us forever. Actually, I do have this fantasy of relocating to Brooklyn in a three-story-Brownstone close to Prospect Park. Yeah, fantasy !

I too have had a fantasy about the 1928 bungelow that I grew up in, my grandparents house in German Village in Columbus, Ohio. I would love to own it. However, German Village has now become quite fashionable and I couldn't just buy it for a song these days.

I guess we can't ever go back. But it is fun to entertain the idea.

Anyway, Why would we want to when we can live in Paradise.
