Does anyone know where mail deposited at a mail station is sorted? As an example, if I mailed a card to my neighbor would it be sorted at that mail station for immediate delivery, or would it be taken all the way to a regional mail sorting facility i.e. Jacksonville only to be brought back to the original village mail station three days later?

IMO I think it would go to the zip code on the card, then sorted, and out to mail station. Like this, your mail station, to the main post office lady lake, sorted to go back to your mail station and put in your neighbor box.

Why not just call lady lake post office and find out if you want to know why it goes and how much time it will take?

Either the Lady Lake P.O. Or Orlando. Not sure what is the determining factor.

If mail were to be sorted at the stations, the delivery people would be working from about seven am to seven pm daily. Given that they're contract employees, not federal, and they have to put in impossibly low bids, I can't see them being willing to work those kind of hours just so something can be delivered the next day rather than in three days.

Dear OP :

We live in 32162 zip code and our mail is sorted and/or held by the Lady lake Post Office.. it is then delivered to village Postal stations by contract workers

Unless they have canceling/sorting machines at Lady Lake, then the mail deposited at a mail station goes to Lady Lake and would be deposited in a huge hamper and sent to the closest mail distribution center where it would be canceled and sorted and then sent back to Lady Lake and then the contract workers would pick it up and bring it to the correct mail station in the Villages. You could always mail yourself a letter and see where the postmark comes from.

Why not just hand deliver to your neighbor?

My guess would be the sectional center that handles the Villages mail. Probably Orlando.

No, No, No Bogie Shooter. You'll be depriving the post office out of postage and then in the long run making them increase the postage to all of us in order to make up the loss in revenue since they are always in financial trouble. Next thing you'll probably suggest is getting rid of junk mail............On second thought that's a good idea or increasing the postage on junk mail to 1st class. I'd really go for that. LOL

I recently mailed something at my local mailbox location here in The Villages to Chicago. It was postmarked " Daytona ".

There has to be area towns that gather and group the mail, both inbound and out. I know jax and orl are both sectional centers receiving from the smaller cities and towns.

When we were in California I mailed a box of stuff to our address here on the 5th of July. We flew into Orlando very very early Wednesday morning. I picked our mail up that evening and was amazed my package was here.

:ohdear: How long have you lived here? My guy is Andy and I am Mr. XXXX.

Try knocking on the door and introduce yourself. Better yet .... write a check

at Christmas and put their name on it. I've done it for 11 years. My guy knows

my name and I know his. Amazing what great service I get.

Try it you may be

Mail has to be sorted by machines that can read hand written zip codes. So, I think that it has to go to a fairly large center to get 'sorted'. I doubt that they look at each piece by hand at Lady Lake to see if there happen to be a few letters that need to stay local. I would bet everything goes to Orlando.

all collected mail from every mail box in The Villages is collected at Lady Lake P.O. and then is sent by truck to a sorting location in Orlando. There every thing is sorted by machine and if addressed to Lady Lake or surrounding area is then sent to the carrier station responsible to deliver that mail for that zip code. It is done this way so machines will read each address and zip code. Then the PO knows how many pieces of mail they are delivering each day and month and year.

Yes, all mail collected each day in The Villages, is taken to Orlando. Machines sort the mail, in delivery order, and returned to the Lady Lake PO for delivery. This mail comes in trays for each route, for fast delivery. It's amazing how machines read your writing etc. It's very important to use your zip code, plus four, to speed up sorting. The carriers who deliver your mail, have the luxury of sorting the mail into your mailboxes, already in order (except for some strays etc that are not addressed correctly). That's why they can sort the mail so fast, it's already in order.

Some time ago I used to deposit my outgoing mail at the Oxford Branch Post Office on 301 until I learned that it was sent to Jacksonville for sorting and took an extra day for delivery to recipient. Now I just use our village mail drop.

My first serious job after the navy in the early 70's was a postal service mail clerk doing the sorting by hand. My dad did the same thing. Now it is so modernized and accurate. I like the setup at tv with the mailboxes for delivery.

Yes, now it is accurate and fast!!! The carriers like the setup in The Villages also, because it's air conditioned! Not too many places where carriers deliver mail that have air conditioned, unless into large apartment complexes??? The boxes are called NDCBU Neighborhood Delivery Collection Box Units!! The Postal Service will be utilizing more of these on streets etc, so they don't have to walk up and down streets to deliver. (Especially in areas of snow)
