Handy man fees

Can anyone tell me how much per hour I can expect to pay a handyman for small repairs of various kinds? Thanks LB

Last time I used our handyman it was $20.00 per hour.

Sad story. I had a wonderful handy man when I moved here 5 years ago. He could do anything that needed doing and he lived in TV. However, I would say what do I owe you and he would say oh, you can pay me next time. And then the total would be like $10.
Sad but not surprising, he went broke, lost his house and had to move in with his brother in Ashtabula

Please consider what a reasonable wage is in this area when hiring. From MIT’s Living Wage Calculator, for a family of 4, it is $24.02 in Lake County and $22.29 in Sumter County. Remember this is based on FT employment.

Since a self-employed pays both parts of employment taxes, (7.65% as employer/7.65% as employee), the living wage numbers adjust up to $26.00 in Lake County and $24.13 in Sumter County. Since they have no benefits this doesn’t consider retirement, vacations, etc.

Also, a self-employed probably only gets paid for 75 to 80 % of a normal 40 hr week since some time spent doing estimates, etc.

Don’t mean to imply you need to pay this, only that the quality of work is affected by standard of living.

A lot of work is charged by the job rather than hourly rate here. So, tis best to talk to the person, say exactly what you want done and then negotiate if necessary.

For someone worth his salt, I'd expect to pay at least $25/ hour plus parts, if needed. It is his tools, truck, and time to get to and from your home. As for a quote, most jobs probably can't be accurately quoted. Most handyman jobs involve fixing, repairing, modifying, correcting, or adding. Who knows what hids beneath the surface, or how bad the "broken" is, or whether there are still compatible parts available. Over the years I've helped neighbors out on "handyman projects" and many seem to involve more work than first thought and at least one run to the hardware store for something.
You can get an idea of what it will take to complete the job, but your best to control costs is to monitor how efficiently the work is progressing.
